About those pepper plants: a month earlier I met a women, who isa gardener and is very successful at producing peppers. It's in my vincinity and her peppers are much earlier than mine in their development. I asked her if she overwintered them in the greenhouse or started them really early. She denied both , said she sowed them in march and that the key is to feed them plenty, as in really really much. She has them in a rich compost mixed up with a little sand and feeds them every day. I went home and upped the fertiliser for my peppers and although it is already fall in Austria they grew and ripened at an amazing rate!

We have real LOOONG cold winters here in Newfoundland, Canada and our gardens start in June, so I feel your pain...but I've now accepted that Winter is a resting time for Mother Gaia...plus, I paint and knit and crochet and do more canning...plus the neighbourhood kids are always here playing in our attic...lol..needless to say I try and keep busy. I used to find it really hard but a change of mindset made all the difference! Love you all and thanks for the visit!! xo

Love the hats!! I’m gonna need a trucker style for myself so I can garden while my kids are in kinder & pre-K and I can quickly leave to pick them up without worrying about the hair 🙃 Your line about how we might be the only one in our social circle, but not the only one out there who’s interested in growing our own food, just really spoke to me. I often feel like I’m the “only one” in my social circle who doesn’t fit in or has so many other interests like these. And I sometimes forget that, there are so many people out there who have similar interests. One of the many reasons I love watching you! It’s like having a long distance friend who gets ya! 💜💜

Hey, I can relate to the winter blues. I have had a lot of that myself. I found that taking vitamin D helps a lot. My dr prescribed 2000 Units in the summer an 4000 in the winter, it makes a big difference. But, a change in mindset helps as well. You’re looking especially lovely today, Jess. Also - Omega 3 oil capsules are very helpful to keep our spirits up. Studies showed they helped as much as antidepressants - and for most of us, has no negative side effects while providing whole body benefits! Ginko also may help with mental attitude & mental stamina, as it is said to help increase oxygen to the brain by improving blood circulation to the brain.

Pat Maier I hope you will try the vitamin D this winter. It has really helped me not to get so blue in the grey, cold days of winter. Do you live somewhere that is especially cloudy and cold or snowy which makes it hard to get out? I feel for you, Pat. No scolding here!

We're in early Spring here in the Southern Hemisphere (South Africa) so the Summer growing season is just starting for us. My pepper seeds (25 varieties are just germinating) & the tomatoes have just had their first transplants into small containers. Each season has it's own charm & rhythm but I have to agree that Autumn is also my favourite. There is nothing like the bitter sweet of a fading Summer while the richness of harvests is still in the air. Blessings to you too!

Thanks for filming for us twice and for including the Celsius! Everything still looks beautiful and lush. Today I pulled out my last three tomato plants, afraid they were diseased. I put them on the gravel drive rather than the compost just to be safe and felt awful thanking them for their bounty while planning for them to be driven over into oblivion. 😣 It's hard not to get attached to our plant babies that have fed us for months!

I've used pokeberry for dyeing wool before and it is beautiful! It can range from a super dark purple color to a bright hot red/pink or even pastels depending on how much berry juice you have vs. fiber. I freeze batches of the berries so I can use a lot at one time for dyeing and I think you'd love using it for the alpaca fibers once they're shorn. I use the book "Harvesting Color" for my recipes, its all about natural dyes and a lot of them are made from weeds all over the united states including a pokeberry recipe.

You are so sweet ! TY for redoing your vlog. I let the poke grow way taller than me and ridiculously wide right in front of the porch steps. Ha, good luck with that. Some peeps take 1 or 2 of the dried poke berries daily as a treatment for arthritis. It's the seeds in the berries as well as the leaves that are toxic. In the 40s here in MI at night. Jess I can relate to the winter doldrums. This past spring I planted several trees and shrubs with winter interest such as the red twig dogwood and a blue spruce directly in sight of my kitchen window. I'm hoping that by giving myself something pretty to look at in the dead of winter this will help with the winter blues. I'll let y'all know if that works. Fingers crossed. Have a great day.

That's so strange. I just made the exact same decision about embracing winter this year. I usually dread the winter and long for the spring, but I want to spend time with family and live in a state of Thanksgiving. And you're right. It's time to plan for the spring garden. I usually plan mine about three times just because it's so much fun! God gave us winter as well as spring, and I'm pretty darn sure he knows what he's doing!

About the poke. Did you know the very young plants are a green that are eaten a lot in the southeast? I can't stand them, but the rest of the family loves them. The berries with are also a traditional medicine. Supposedly the berries are actually edible but the seeds are not. I have known family who have eaten them all their lives. I don't eat them but they did. They grow all over my property and I leave them because the bright red stems and dark purple berried are so pretty.

I had a good chukkel now, your fall starts to drop to 15 degrees celcius and evenings of around 5 degrees C, thats mid winter for us! If you want to keep your peppers going for few weeks longer and not worry about frost, get AGRIBON-30 or 50 and drape over your pepper plant in the late afternoon and take the cover off in the morning. They'll protect your pepper plant in light frost. Agribon-19 is lighter so I prefer to use Agribon-50 for warm weather plants. Love your videos. Fertilize heavy with nitrogen early in the spring and hold back on nitrogen once the peppers start setting flowers. Then switch over to phosphate, lime and potassium rich mineral such as green sand. growing, lots of N. flowering, lots of P, K, and Ca.

Only sort of kidding about that. Planning on making some DIY garden art this winter, like a totem from a fence post. Loved the description of Fire week. Here it lasts a lot longer. Hi jess and miah! Love your channel and your honesty and entertainment! I too struggle with SAD. In upstate NY, we had a 33degree night and my tomatoes and peppers survived only because I covered them 🙄. That being said, my peppers did pretty well this year, just in the last few weeks. My brother advised me to use epsom salt to spray them and pour the extra at the stem. After just two doses, they took off and I am delighted to finally get a few peppers. (formerly I have only had ONE pepper ever). I am still only a beginning gardener and we would starve if it were up to me to grow our food, but each year I learn a little more 🤗. Shame on me for waiting till my 50’s to start. Double shame on me because my grandparents were farmers and my mom always gardened. You both are inspiring and have such a beautiful family and love for God.
