I love this. Like, as someone who's studied Shakespeare perhaps a bit too extensively (theater nerd, English major, all that jazz), I've always loved it when people realize that Romeo and Juliet is a weird and madcap comedy in tragedy trappings. The idea of Rosaline finding out what happens, and in stereotypical teen drama fashion trying first to break them up and get her cheating dude back, then clearly becoming weirdly besties with Juliet in the process? This absolutely _sings_ to me. Also, I'm just loving Rosaline's nurse. Just the absolute opposite of Juliet's wacky, Elizabethan stock-character nurse, with her malapropisms and day-drinking. The absolute "So done with this" way that she shoots down Rosaline's lie about having cholera...this is a woman who's seen this teenage menace do all sorts of absurd things, and has absolutely zero patience left for her shenanigans.

I mean I don't really think it was a case of cheating, from what I remember she either ignored him or he'd just gone into mourning because he'd heard she'd sworn off love full stop, and that if it were a case of them being together then it seemed like it more more that she dumped him (the few things I remember of the 30s movie with Leslie Howard in it that I only watched because of Basil Rathbone was when he sees her at the party and she gives one of the best 'I told you not to call me anymore!' look I've ever seen). Still, I do like a weirdly bestie vibe and a 'done with this' vibe. Seen the tv show 'still star crossed'?

@@agenttheater5 I more feel like _this_ take particularly reads it as cheating, and depending on how the play is staged, sometimes Romeo reads more as a cad who falls in-and-out of love for any pretty face (the production at my university definitely leaned on that, just like it went full ham with _all_ the dirty humor. Got a trio of little old ladies to walk out before intermission, and possibly scandalized a whole bunch of parents who brought their middle school kids back for the weekend show after a considerably less NC-17 afternoon matinee was done for their class! >:3 ). In particular, Mercutio implies that this is just how Romeo is, falling for unattainable girls and then bemoaning his life as a tragedy when they refuse his advances, it's just that Rosaline caught on and swore chastity before he'd even tried.

Is everyone just ignoring the fact that this play is about the tragic consequences of unreasonable hatred and violence? There's nothing remotely comic about it! Whatever a particular individual may think of Romeo and Juliet's romance, that's not the point of the play. Shakespeare always threw some comic relief in, but it's always evident which of his stories was meant to be taken as a comedy overall and which a tragedy. The message of Romeo and Juliet is that their bigoted and controlling families ruin the lives of two innocent members who didn't even want to be part of the fight but got caught in the crossfire. This film is satirizing a story that never even existed.

Yes, this role seems right up Kaitlyn's alley. I was always interested in finding out more about Rosaline, since Romeo seemed to get over her WAY too quickly, and she never actually appears. Plus, Isabela as Juliet is just a bonus treat!

Rogue One made more movie out of less, and it was amazing, but nobody was expecting it to be good. Now. I am not going to rule out that this movie will be great. But given Disney's creative and corporate choices over the last year and a half, and how Hulu is now strongly associated with Disney via Disney+, I am going to reserve judgement.

To be fair, aside from a name, Shakespeare didn’t give any true indication that Rosaline wasn’t simply a figment of Romeo’s imagination. That said, FINALLY! I finally see an adaptation of Rosaline instead of making a guess of if she truly existed!

Yes! This was my biggest issue with R&J and what most people gloss over. He was madly in love with Rosaline then in 3 days he was suddenly obsessed with Juliet. If I remember correctly, the story opens with him lamenting over her until he spots Juliet. Had they not gone off the deep end/faced pushback from her family (which made the chase more fun), I'm sure he would have become obsessed with a new girl soon after.

Furthermore, love at first sight was the standard of way of writing “falling in love” at the time. It was standard literary practice. Now, their ideas of what love is and should be were a bit different from ours. But still, there’s that.

@@quiroz923 plus in the play Juliet did acknowledge that this isn't how love should happen, said that the suddenness of it all scared her, 'it is too rash, too sudden, too like the lightening which doth cease to strike ere one says it lightens'. I think most times when someone falls in love at first sight in a play they or someone asks how it's possible to fall in love that quickly (though in one case someone asked that question and then later themselves fell in love with someone at first sight)

she's had some attention - the tv series 'still star-crossed' (think ti was based on a book but can't find it anywhere) and is again a minor but starts off an important point in the Anne Fortier book 'Juliet' (woman finding out she's a descendant of an Italian woman named Guilietta whose story eventually inspired Shakespeare after a few hundred years had passed). Then again there are other shakespearean characters with names like Rosaline or Rosalind so maybe people got mixed up.

I've read enough comments now to know that very few people know this about the original story. If the filmmakers had been clear that they had altered this key starting plot point, I might have liked the idea. But most people seem to be just accepting that Romeo was a two-timer in the original too, without ever having read the original, or at least without having understood what it was actually saying if they did.

This seems like a very humorous concept for a show or movie. From what we all know, Rosaline was just a supporting character in Romeo and Juliet. We don’t get a lot of info about her apart from being Romeo’s past lover. It’s cool that she’s now the lead character in this and now Romeo and Juliet are the supporting characters. except that it's not really the case, they're rewriting the whole thing. Here's she's the ex who wants her boyfriend back. In the original play she rejected both Romeo and love (or at least dating) in general and seemed to be more interested in a life of chastity. Plus I think the Friar said something about her knowing that Romeo's love for her wasn't genuine in the first place.

sometimes the best comedy works because it has something sad in it. Either it'll be something we know is sad but shown in a way that makes us still laugh like a Mel Brooks movie, or it'll be funny with a surprisingly sad scene in it that we don't laugh at even if we were laughing before and laugh again afterwards, seen that plenty of times in comedy shows

It’s actually crazy how no one with movie making money has ever considered this possibility. I mean anyone (aka everyone) who knows romeo and juliet and the fact that there was a girl who curved him before he shifted to juliet would have wondered what their interactions were like. The reason is that most versions before this were made by people who actually read the play and know that Rosaline had forsworn romance and never accepted Romeo as her 'boyfriend.' He asked her to change her mind and give love a chance, she said no, he was sad for a bit and then moved on to a girl who liked him back. This is not based on the original play but a 'what-if' version: what if Rosaline hadn't refused Romeo but secretly wanted him for herself?

well they didn't really have a relationship before that, she'd sworn off love and he went into excessive mourning because of it, not sure if they actually talked - though I think the friar did say something about her knowing that his 'love' wasn't genuine so I think people have had her reject him on those grounds. Some earlier movies sort of gave us a glimpse at her and her character (the 30s movie with the leads in the 40s and 30s and the 60s movie with the leads in their mid-late teens). There was that show 'Still Star-crossed (which I think was a book first but can't find it anywhere) and they talked about her in the Anne fortier book 'Juliet' (very minor character but still starts of fa lot).

They never had a relationship. He was her suitor and got rejected. She never gave him a chance so he moved on. This is why teachers REALLY need to teach the entire play and not just a few scenes, because then we all think we know the whole plot when we don't. The first time I read it I was shocked how completely different the story was from what the popular conception had led me to assume. If filmmakers want to use modern approaches to help people understand the original better, they need to make sure they are still approaching the original or it's hardly going to help people understand it better!

Not a huge fan of the "trying to win him back" concept. I feel like it would have been more in character to see Rosaline getting involved and causing mischief because she wanted revenge after Romeo broke her heart, not because she wanted to continue her relationship with him. But it still looks cool, so I might watch it.
