I actually love how “dignified” this version is. I get that a lot of people want Rose to go “crazy” here but I like that this version shows a woman who, even at her lowest point, is still trying to keep it together as any true showgirl would.

Most people assume Rose is just motivated by a desire for fame, but I think it's way more than that. I remember something Judy Garland acknowledged about her own, equally brutal stage mother - "My mother was part of an era that was hard on women. She wanted so desperately to be a person in her own right." I believe that's also true for Rose. She's desperate not to be weak and just take what the male-dominated world tells her, and it drives her so much that it blinds her to what she's denying herself, and her daughters.

Some critics have called this scene a "nervous breakdown." It is the most heartbreaking musical climax I've ever seen, and it is not as her daughter wrote it.Gypsy Rose Lee hated her mother, without whom she was nothing. Mama Rose was, on stage and in real life, a tragic figure.

I would like to see the movie with Ms. Russel’s voice restored to all of her songs. I believe that she was a good singer. Not great, but better than many people may be assuming.
@bradleyscarton39313 жыл бұрын
Rosalind Russell’s voice was no way a match for this show. If you listen to her vocals on some of the songs where she was dubbed, she’s off key, out of tune, and out of sync with the music. It would have been embarrassing for her as well as not in line with the character. Rose is suppose to be vocal show stopper. I wish Warner Bros. had gone with someone else like Judy Garland for Rose instead. This number in particular is to show that Rose was the real talent of the family and vocally dynamite. Rosalind wasn’t that thus why she was dubbed.

@@bradleyscarton3931 . Sad but true.
@jenniferfelan6942 жыл бұрын
@@bradleyscarton3931 I agree. Bette Midler's portrayal of Mama Rose from the 1994 version of Gypsy was way better. Rosalind Russell's voice was not a match for this version of Gypsy. Plus the song's original key was a step higher for Mama Rose. This version dropped the key a step down lower for a contralto. But check out Bette Midler's version.
