Just bought myself a pair, this boot is filling a void that I've been looking for. I have been wanting a pair of barefoot boots that have a thicker outsole that's good for hiking and is also durable enough to last I'm excited to try these out. I have been wearing Jim Green boots for more than 25 years in construction , engineering, boating and adventure biking. I have 11 pairs from the B5(2) to Razorbacks. I wear through about 2 soles per year. I rotate them a lot and wear nothing else. I use the B5 with very thin sole to walk the steel when rigging structures because of the support and flexibility(first pair I ever bought) Every few years I pack the worn boots in a box and send them back to Crouch. 3 weeks later they arrive back as good as new. Not one upper has ever given up. I reckon that is the best lifetime Guarantee I have come across. I may try the Ranger but the conditions on the Cape West Coast are fairly harsh so I may just stick with my Razorbacks. Truly the most honest product I have ever come across Thank you guys

Just placed my order for the Barefoot Boots plus a Freedom Bracelet! Went back-and-forth on the boot color, but ultimately went with Fudge for its patina factor. Huge kudos to Jim Green for reaching out to Rose Anvil, for being open to creating a pretty significant variation on a core product, and for taking the financial risk on pre-manufacturing a reasonably large run of these boots. And huge kudos as well to Weston for making such great choices on this boot! As many other commenters have noted, this is exactly what I've been looking for for some time-a genuine work boot that's anatomically shaped and features no heel-ball offset. As a long time watcher, and wearer of quality hiking boots (Danners, Lowas, Alico, ect) and various barefoot shoes and boots, I must say, finally someone did it. I must say when I first saw the African Ranger and considered getting I pair, I was like this almost a real minimalist boot and man if they just adjusted the last a bit and only made it zero drop they could have the perfect and simplest full leather zero drop hiker. And well you did it. Though I think it might be interesting if they offered a toe stiffened option too, but got balance manufacturering logistics....this is awesome. Hell yeah, this is exactly what I need. My Lems Boulders are great, very comfortable, but it's hard to justify the cost for a boot you can't have resoled. You've made a durable, repairable barefoot boot from a know and reputable manufacturer. Impressive.

I have the leather waterproof boulder boots with the 'pedestrian' style outsoles with hundreds of miles on them. This year I had my cobbler "resole" them by sanding them down and cementing new vibram zegama 1443 outsoles, which coincidentally and suspiciously look like rose anvils design😅. I exclusively use them on dirt/gravel trails but the contact cement approach seems to be good enough for my usage*. I purchased the outsoles($30) and the cobbler charged $35.

Been wearing casual and military/work boots for 20+ years. I bought a pair of their normal African Rangers earlier this year and absolutely love em. The owner described them as 'little tanks on your feet' and I agree. They're comfortable and tough, and I think they're also ruggedly handsome. And, they also allow a wider foot. This boot came out just in time! Just moved to PNW and have been needing to get some boots. During my search, I fell in love with the idea of boots that can be repaired instead of replaced, and I also learned about the concept of barefoot shoes and definitely wanted to get a boot that can actually fit my toes comfortably. I couldn't find any leather barefoot boots that can be repaired easily, and just when I was about to give up, here they are! Just bought a pair. Hopefully, they will add a Razorback barefoot option in the future.

Hey - I bought a pair of the Jim Green's based on your video. They arrived the other day and I must say I LOVE these boots! I was looking for a good alternative to my iron rangers (which I also decided to purchase based in part of your videos) for biking around Brooklyn in the winter. I bought mine true to size (8 m) and they're perfect, I can even wear fairly thick socks and feel good in them. As a martial artist, I also love the fact that these are barefoot and have a very good middle ground between ankle protection and mobility. I can say with relief that my search for my lifetime's worth of quality boots is complete with the Iron Ranger (for really bad weather and long days) and the Jim Green's (for hiking and fairer weather, maybe even training!) For all the people in EU/UK, I contacted Jim Green yesterday and they did advise they had some via their website as well which would allow you to avoid taxes ... Alas, I was busy this evening so now almost all they had are out of stock but if you click through the sizes I think there are a couple left in larger ones. Gutted I missed these but hope this helps someone with larger feet and who is outside the US and still wants a pair without the import taxes. (UK doesn't have duties AFAIK for example)

This is some good work. I've had a pair of African Rangers for a little over a year and you've addressed most of the issues I've started running into. Getting rid of the compressed fiber board toe liner is step forward. They held up for about 8 months in my boots before starting to fall apart, to which they were easy enough to just rip out. The matted fiber insole of the old rangers has held up fairly well but in the last 2 months both shoes now have a split in the midsole that run the entire width of the shoe. Wasn't to happy to find that out as I believe it is going to negatively impact my ability to resole the boots. I do wish the composite heel liner would have been upgraded to leather or removed though. Where the composite board follows the upper under the stitch's to the outside of the boot around the heal I've had chunks start breaking off.

I live in the socal desert and its 115f regularly here in the summer and ive been looking for exactly this. A barefoot boot that is leather lined so it don’t stink as much. I would use the boulder boot from lems but its got a flannel lining which makes it too hot. Love it, exactly what i was looking for.

I just received my Jim Green African Ranger Barefoot boots after I ordered them 3 days ago. I stay in South Africa. So far they are pretty comfortable and I can't wait to have fully worn them in. I also have the Jim Green Razor Backs and as soon as my budget allows, I will buy the Jim Green Shoelie or the Vellie. Love these boots, they are tough and they can be repaired. Great videos by the way. The Razor Backs I bought in 2018 and they still look and feel almost new, very tough boot but also a little harder to wear/break in.

I am 70 years old now but as a teenager I would sometimes use army surplus Vietnam boots for hiking. They had a lightweight nylon canvas type upper, a thin metal plate near the arch for punji stick protection, and I think a couple perforated metal air vents near the arch on the instep to let water out. They were quite breathable, the vents maybe 1/2" in diameter thin metal set almost like eyelets, with very tiny openings, enough to block coarse sand I think. I would think ventilation would be an asset in Africa as well as long as the openings were the right size. There was one random looking tread design that attempted to confuse trackers trying to tell which direction the person was traveling. A later design had more sole protection armor.

Not hot at all during the summer. I usually can only get 6 months out of my boots, but other than the leather getting a nice patina, they still look brand new. Thanks to the information from this channel, I bought myself a pair of Razorbacks after trying numerous classic US work boots, and I'm incredibly impressed with the quality and comfort. For the price (I believe $179 USD when I got mine, 2023), you simply cannot find a better quality boot anywhere else. After just 2 days of use, they fit my feet so nicely and I can tell they're going to last me many years :) I particularly like that the lower profile keeps the boots from pinching where it would crease if they were 8" or taller. If you haven't decided yet, let me help. A huge yes! These boots are fantastic! I suggest an insole, though. My usual boots, I get extra wides. These are slightly wider, and an insole helps fill that smidge of extra space for a snug ( and very comfortable) fit.

Weston is South African, this is cannon now. Zero drop (as barefoot as a boot can go) and the climate friendly mid top height (heavier boots can get uncomfortable in our summers) is something that we know we need and you can see the implementation in our default footwear (vellies if you wanna look it up). This shoe takes the basic concepts and just elevates it to a whole other level.

In UK is called a bellows tongue rather than gusset, similar to forging bellows. Honestly, they look like very good boots, easy to resole and rebuild.

I just bought these a couple weeks ago and I have been working them like crazy in fact they are almost the only shoes I wear. This is my favorite thing I’ve ever bought, it’s so flexible and as someone with lower back problems the zero drop is a life saver. I also bought the veg tanned version and it seems they have completely reworked to only use your design but I’m not cutting these things up these boots are gold. I ordered a pair and I personally hate arch support, any arch support as in most cases the arch support adds pain as you have this thing pushing up on the middle of your foot. Some shoes even have it going to far back so you have a corner of your heal on the arch support. Merrel has that issue.

I’m so excited to give these a spin! My sneakers gave out after 6 months so I was done with sneakers at work. I love my Iron Rangers and my Mocs, but before trying heritage boots I was on a barefoot kick because my feet never hurt in my Xero or SOM’s. Having a real boot that’s actually built well AND is zero drop is gonna be insane! Especially because I’m a believer in the leather forming to your feet now. My iron rangers are so comfortable despite it being solid veg tan leather.

I started my adult life in the infantry and special forces walking an insane couple thousand miles. Feet were fine in old school jungle boots. As a civilian I moved to thick padded keen boots. Totally destroyed my feet. Minimal as close to barefoot is everything for long miles.

I hear this often and i always wonder if it's more a case of the thousands of miles in jungle boots(or just the miles in general) just destroying your feet combined with age.

generally if you're carrying heavy gear you'll want more ankle support (if you're not carrying heavy gear then ankle support moves the strain from your ankles which have evolved to take that kind of strain to your knees which aren't) but if you've got low ankle boots and you need that support you can use ankle/shin wraps.

I really like the idea of this boot, there would only be two things I would like to see made differently: 1st being the removal of any toe spring. As you can see in the video, the toe springs up a bit. Not as much as any traditionally made work boot, especially right next to a pair of Nick‘s 2nd either a full sock liner or the removal of it to have even less dropoff from ball to toe. That might not be significant, but I really do not enjoy half sock liners for how they feel. Still, i love to see details like a wide toe box and as minimal dropoff from ball to toe as with this boot. Makes me want to wear it right away :)

Yeah seeing the half sock liner is pretty disappointing, and it definitely makes them not zero drop. I imagine after a few hundred miles they’ll compress a fair bit, but 2.5mm of extra stack in the heel is actually a lot. Hopefully they keep making them and revise this particular aspect of the design.

I got my pair of these a few weeks ago and really really like them. I’ve wanted a zero drop, minimalist, good ground feel boot for a while. And when I say boot, I mean a real boot. You have delivered that and I am thankful. With that, I would like to share my feedback on two aspects of the Barefoot Ranger. First, these boots have a slight “clown shoe” feel. If you could cut the sole just a little closer to the welt I think it would make a big improvement in the aesthetics. Second, in a short boot like this I would like to see all eyelets, no speed hooks. These boots can be worn loosely with no laces at all. With all eyelets it gives the option to tie a knot in the ends of the shoe laces so the boots can be worn loose but the laces are still contained. If you made the boots like that, I’d buy pairs in every color you made available.

This seems like the perfect barefoot-style boot, wish they weren't sold out already BUT I'll be pre-ordering for sure. I highly recommend getting Jim Green to post the stack height, aka 16mm, on their website and a picture of each layer with it's thickness would be amazing too. You've essentially got a photo here in your video too!

Been an avid follower of your channel for a while, loved the original Jim Green review but the heels have always been a bit prominent for me. This is the perfect boot for me. I almost exclusively wear leather loafers that are pretty much flat with no support. Chunky soled boots make my arches hurt. My feet just need basic protection because they are strong and dont need support. I just ordered these today. Very excited about them. Keep up the good work!

I bought a pair of African Ranger boots a year ago. I was pretty much sold on them by the way they looked and how well received they were (particularly by the review on this channel). The thing that sold me on them was a customer saying how they were slip resistant. I work 50-60 hours in a kitchen and wore them to non-slip-resistance in about 3 months. I love the boots for everything else. I do wish they kept their slip-resistance longer. I had a pair of bush nunn kitchen shoes and the tread remains slip resistant but the pads literally fell off so I super glued them back on and its works. But they are god awful uncomfortable. Could I buy “slip resistant sheets” from somewhere and glue them on the rangers? Or is that too crazy? I live about an hour away from a cobbler so I know eventually I will trek out to them but was hoping someone had a do it yourself solution. I have event tried carving tread back onto the worn flat soles with a whittling knife which is incredibly difficult. I am planning to borrow a dremel to see if I can carve treads better on that way but dont want to stink up my garage. I do plan to get this new pair you have designed because I do love the shoe in general, it feels grand and I can use and abuse them doing hiking, travelling, kitchen work, blacksmithing, landscaping, you name it. They also look dope so I dont feel too much like a yokel dressing up to nicer events with them. Ps my girlfriend says they smell like cat piss when I take them off, is there any solution to that? I assume they use it in the tanning solution because thats something that is used in tanning. I will say again though they are great boots, I like them strides more than my red wings, paladiums, wolverines, timberlands, and adidas(sambas)

As a boot aficionado, I am digging the pourpose built nature of these light weight boots. I am from the PNW and grew up with Danner and White's boots. I remember some years ago I bought a pair of the first gen Nike sfb boots for training and was completely blown away with the difference a light weight and low drop boot could make as far as physical output, the difference was instantly noticed on long rucks. Running, jumping, climbing, basically all athletic attributes were easier and improved. This definitely was at the cost of durability, as I went through 3 pairs in just a few years. I still have an old well worn pair just for special occasions.

I feel conflicted by this video... on the one hand, I love your reviews, and find you to be a mostly unbiased source, with great knowledge of materials, construction processes, and history, but on the other hand, I'm just wondering if you really have all the knowledge and wisdom to actually make an improvement to an African Ranger boot. I know you have years of leather craft under your belt, but this just seems like minute changes for the sake of people who will never experience the the original conditions the boot was designed for. Jim Green states that they got feedback from actual African Rangers about what they need in a boot, and you showed us those design choices in the original, i.e. the cheaper insole, the thicker outsole, and the different tread. When I see the new boots that you've inspired (and the 10 dollar price increase over the original), I feel that the original purpose of the boot has been muddied. Even if the differences are only minor, I'm curious if they actually benefit the African Rangers that the boot was originally designed for. I see all these changes being made by somebody who can afford more than one pair of boots, and wants to tailor the boots to a more well rounded type of boot, without realizing the strict and purpose built design of the original. I feel like I'm losing my point by trying to belabor it, so I'll say it simply: Why would you, someone who is _not_ an African Ranger, think that you could design a better boot for an African Ranger than an actual in-the-field African Ranger? I don't know... I hope this comment doesn't sound mean, I wouldn't nit-pick if I didn't love your videos!

This is not a complaint. This is my first experience purchasing a Rose Anvil collaboration. I received the email 19 minutes late It took 30 minutes for the email link to connect The email directed me to the website (not a separate site) I knew there was issues so I had already gone to website The boots were available to the public, not just Rose Anvil The purchase took several refreshes to complete I was able to complete the purchase 45 minutes later This is just my experience. I'm glad I got a pair.

Could’ve been you were using the browser while logged into your email. I’m assuming it was your email address that gave you special access and not necessarily the email that rose anvil sent out. I’m assuming site took longer to load and simultaneously crashed because of the amount of traffic going through. I had the same issue. It comes with the territory 🤷🏻‍♂️

Honestly, this is really cool. I’ve been a fan of barefoot shoes for a while, largely because of the flat insole and wide toe box, but like you I’m not fully bought in to the extreme thin outsole; if I’m walking for a day honestly I prefer more material between me and the ground, and if I’m walking on concrete ‘ground feel’ is just uncomfortable. This is, in my opinion, the perfect versatile boot. Resoleable, durable where it matters (the upper), speed hooks for convenience, wide toe box and zero-drop for comfort, weatherproofing… I really think you’ve nailed it here and as soon as I’m back in my home country I’ll be ordering a pair. Good job!

Just a tip for wearing any boot but when tying it up do an overhand on the front, then the back, then back around and finish the knot. It sounds useless but not only does it keep the bow smaller but it helps seal dirt out and give a more sturdy feel.

This is *so* not my kind of boot. Ive really grown to love robust ankle support and high cuffs--and I couldnt give them up these days. I still can't help but respect the hyper specialization. I hope whoever buys these can enjoy them for a very long time.

You turned me on to jim green and for my first pair i bought the African ranger barefoot 1/2 size up because of my wide feet. I love the style and materials but they do have pressure points on my 4e width feet! Well i have since done some research and discovered that your barefoot version uses its own last but their normal raised heel boots have wider lasts so i also bought a different pair of jim green boots. I gotta say though, the zero drop tread is awesome and i kinda wish i could get this with the jim green last. Like if they added a wedge to the tread but its not an option for a "custom" order to mix that tread with a drop from the heal. Oh well, cant have everything. The perfect boots for me would either be the zero drop with a wider, perhaps true barefoot last (splated toes to accommodate that discerning crowd perhaps) or perhaps your tread on an african ranger boot with some wedge added. My next pair may be a more standard set of African ranger boots. I still intend to keep breaking in the barefoot version. Ill try a shoe stretcher and softening spray etc. for now i wear them with dress socks so its not money wasted. Its nice to know i can get boots that dont cost $400, have natural materials and dont look like orthotic shoes like im some kind of invalid. I went to a respected shoe store that alsosets people up with expensive orthotics and he set me up with dunham boots (i have already bought their shoes because of the wide size requirements) but the heels were already curved and at a weird angle that influenced my walk and i don't need so much "suspension" when i walk. I just need something to help the pressure points in my heels and balls a little. The guy didn't sell cork or leather insoles insisting "they bottom out" but in my opinion the neoprene foam in my orthotic insoles retaining its springyness is also a problem which i wont get into. Anyhow, i love the chanel and its informative aspect. Im not a shoe/boot connoisseur but having specific needs means sometimes i have to act like one so anything informational helps me stay informed and find sources of things that better suit my needs. Dang I can’t believe I missed this video its exactly what the barefoot market was missing and pretty close in the basics to what I had in mind of what should be done with its simplicity, quality and repairability. Even if I didn’t have a specific use case for needing this type of boot regularly I would still buy one just to show support to hopefully keep it going or get other companies to take notice to start making similar ones.
