I think Morphy - Schulten 1857 would be worth a cover, as Morphy has a similar broken kingside as Paulsen does in this game, yet again strangles his opponent's development like the master he is and wins with a lovely queen sacrifice.

My favorite Morphy game is Bird - Morphy, 1857 where he unleashes the beautiful Rxf2!!, Bxf2 Qa3!! and just destroys his opponent immediately. Fantastic geometry involved in that sequence.

Yes please Eric! More in this series would be welcome. [smile] In particular show; "The gold coin game" & the queen sac followed by 2 knights forcing the king across the board ending in a rook sac followed by whites king stepping out of the way to allow the other rook to mate. Sorry for the long description, I don't know the players or the names of those games. [lol &a grin]

This is a fantastic series. If I might make a suggestion: I'd love to see you cover Robert Byrne vs Bobby Fischer (1963). After the Game of the Century, this is probably my favourite Fischer game, because the sacrifice is so deep.

I think it's right that in those days they didn't have chess clocks. Morphy taking 12 minutes for the big move sounds a lot, but I think Paulsen was terrible for taking hours over some of his moves, and that was partly what gave rise to time controls being brought in. I can't remember my source for any of that! - but I think it's right.

Morphy was so far ahead of his time he is definitely my #1 favorite. It’s too bad he didn’t take chess as serious as players do today and really unfortunate he was born in the 1800’s 😅. People underestimate his strength just because most if not all of his opponents were just average players and that’s not really his fault.
@ВасилийВишневский-н2ф
@ВасилийВишневский-н2ф Жыл бұрын
Anderssen, Paulsen, Staunton were definitely not average players, just as example. Although Morphy did not play with Staunton, there were many very strong opponents.
@thundermill7109
@thundermill7109 Жыл бұрын
Morphy also had a really good score against Anderssen and Paulsen. I think Anderssen was actually a good player so he is one of the few players that I think shows Morphy’s true strength. That’s why I said most in my comment because some players were good back then, just nobody strong enough to have Morphy be recognized as one of the strongest players of all time (I’d argue at least top 5).

Eric! I would love to see you make videos on games everyone should know. But keep this in mind. Nobody shows the whole game first. Show the whole game quickly... then get into the analysis and what ifs! I can't be the only one who gets lost at times with... shoulda, woulda, coulda then Agodmator or gothom or whoever it is says. But what was really played in the game was... Or they don't even tell you the structure of moves they're talking about is hypothetical in the first place. Show the whole game first. You'll stand out among everyone else showing classic games.

Instead of Ra2, Qa6 a move earlier than was played would force the back queen away from d3 although black would still be much better. In this game white, starting with Bf3 instead of c3, always played the right move one move too late when it became a bad move.
