How great it is to make an apple pie when the home-canned filling with your blend of spices is in a jar on your pantry shelf. Canning apple pie filling is not much work, it looks beautiful in the jars--especially Weck jars--and it is such a convenience. With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner, stock up on your home-canned pie fillings and save lots of effort during the holiday time crunch. Recipe is below.

@@RoseRedHomestead Oh my..... I just told my husband last night when we were watching your video.... she is a teacher/educator... not only from the clear instruction, but the mannerisms to the clothing... lol.... I am retired from teaching... taught lower elementary to college level. I obtained my Ed.S. degree in Administration/Superintendency from Southwest Baptist University and decided I really didn't want to put up with all the political aspects of the profession. So, finished the degree, taught a couple more years and I was done after 15 years. I think those who have been in education can easily identify others who have or are there now. Thank you for such a wonderful, clear instructional video. It's truly appreciated.

LOL, I grew up using an apple peeler/corer/slicer/parer and inherited my Aunt Maxine's about 20 years ago. What a time saver! I clamp it to sink ledge so peels fall directly into sink, my lemon juice water is in big bowl in other side. Makes assembly so easy. I also use ClearJel or just wait to thicken when opening jars. Apple scrap jelly or vinegar is always the 2nd half of project. 👍 Left over apples become turnovers. Actually, I don't even make pies anymore, always turnovers. Why? Individual serving, easy to freeze & heat, instant snack, yummy for every meal, including breakfast. Why not?

Hi Rose and Jim. I'm on a roll with your videos. Next is the canning of peaches. I haven't tried water bathing yet. Before this video I was under the asking that I needed a special canner. I'm so glad I do not. So in the meantime I'm saving your videos. And at a later date printing them. I suppose you realize I'm a little backwards. Meaning I should start with leaning the ins and outs the process of water bathing. I guess I make things difficult for myself. Hey everything works out eventually.! Thanks so much. Peaches( my favorite fruit) here I come. Thank you both so much. Take care 🙂

Don't know if you've heard of this; but I took the handle off of my mom's handed down Apple peeler/corer. I then adapted my cordless drill to the shaft. Mom planted a fruit tree orchard nearly 50 years ago (because she was raised with orchards, gardens, berry patches, and grape vineyard) and I've been the custodian for last 15 years since she and my father passed away. Lots of apples every year and I'm a single, childless woman with many health issues. When it's just myself or a helper, this little hack saves time and my arthritis ridden body!

Pam, I just love you!! I wish you were a blood relative I could come visit to enjoy your company and to learn at your feet. I am a newbie canner. I made the Ball apple pie filling recipe and obeyed the 1” headspace as instructed in the recipe. (I measured with the headspace tool.). What an oogie mess! Syrup oozed down the jars and I was afraid they wouldn’t seal, but thankfully, they did. Even so, I got distracted by a noise when opening a jar and missed hearing that whoosh of air. It was probably good jar of product but to be safe, I pretended it didn’t “whoosh” and I discarded the entire jar. Better safe than sorry. It’s just a few apples, after all. I canned the pie filling in Ball pint jars but wasn’t sure that was enough apple to make a pie. No worries! Hubby and I couldn’t eat a whole pie anyway. So I stumbled on a great idea. I rolled up pie filling into flour tortillas and placed them in a small casserole dish. I spread a bit of butter on top an sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon! Wow! We’re they good!! I also put frozen Pepperidge Farms puff pastry into the oven, let them rise and filled the cavities with warmed pie filling! That was good too! Next time…. More headspace for the jars. The Ball Cookbook led me astray! 😊😝😃

I used that same recipe last year and this with larger slices. I put the apples into the pot with the liquid, so they cooked a bit longer than yours did. (It's possible I misread the instructions; I'll have to check.) The apples slid right through the funnel, being softer, yet they didn't end up too soft in the final product. I never made a pie crust. 🤣 DH is not fond of crust or cobblers (though I am-too fond) so we just enjoyed the filling as it was. You can get the clear jell straight from Hoosier Hills Farms, along with a lot of other interesting products. They also offer free shipping with a large enough order. I stopped buying from Amazon quite a while back. I didn't care for the peeler/slicer as much as I thought I would. My apples were a lot juicier (no Granny Smiths in the stores or to order last year or this 🤷‍♀️) and the juice made an awful mess everywhere. It also kept defeating the suction cup. I have more apples coming next week, so I think I'll try using it with the slicer part engaged. I've always used thick slices, so maybe it's time to try thin ones and see how we like them. 🙂

I watched your video, took notes, and a couple of weeks later started making apple pie filling for the 1st time without any further studying! Unprepared & I couldn't figure out how many apples you started with. "A sink-full makes 5 quarts, I deducted. I have about 1/2 a sink-full so I should end up with 5 pints." Sure enough. I'm a canning math genious!

Oh boy - here’s a weird one. I water bath canned 3 liter Weck jars with this recipe (the cardamom IS a wonderful addition!) and water got INTO one of my Wecks even though the gasket looks fine and the clips are tight! EDIT - NOPE- gasket looks weird in one spot - I’ll make a pie tomorrow with it! Dang, you said to check and I thought I did. Lesson learned!

@@RoseRedHomestead i was wondering if that peeler/corer would work on pears. Seems logical. Potatoes too?

Time to update my pie filling recipe to include ClearJel, and I think I'd better buy some new canning books also to find out what other innovations have been accepted for use in canning. Thank you for this detailed and informative video!

Hello, I was suprised when I saw the weckjars. I thought that americans only have balljars. And yes they are beautiful. This model is called "tulp" ("tulip"). Thanks for sharing.

So thank you for this recipe. I have tried several times to pre-cook my apples for my pies and I overcooked them or undercooked them every time. I am going to try this and I hope it works. Thanks again!

Try stirring and scraping with a flat edge spatula, or “pancake turner” when thickening your clear-jel mixture.

This looks so delicious. I'm not big on pumpkin-ish things in the autumn but gimme apple pie filling any day, all day long. Lol. Have just gotten up the courage to try making this, but with regular canning jars. It took me hours to peel and core the apples tonight. HOURS. Showed your apple peeler to my son and told him that's what we need. So I'm unable to actually can the apple pie filling tonight, refrigerated it immediately in the outdoor kitchen, it's a balmy 37° F in Tennessee, and here's hoping that I don't kill anyone with apple pie filling.

I put my apple corer peeler slicer on a lipped baking tray to keep the mess contained, especially if using juicy apples. With irregular shaped apples I will slice off tge uneven ends which makes peeling easier.

Pam and Jim, thank you so much for all the hard work and love you put into your videos. You are the go to person for everything canning and food storage. You are the best teacher ever! We can't wait to try your apple pie filling recipe. What brand of Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend and Clear Gel did you use? I couldn't quite make it out in the video.

You are so very welcome. Thanks for your kind words. The pumpkin pie spice was from The Spice Hunter and the ClearJel is Hoosier Hill Farms--both from Amazon.

Hello Pam, making apple pie filling for Canning this week. This video very helpful. Not that many people can here in the UK. I have tried for weeks now to get Clear Jel but only place I can get it is amazon but it is sooo expensive at 680 grams for £55 ($63). Is this usual price point in US? If not, can you suggest a cheaper alternative for Canning? Thank you.
