@@fuffofox You can follow Wolfwalkers pretty well since they kinda explain/show what the world is, while Song of the Sea kind of expects the viewers to already know Irish folklore. To be honest, I don't totally blame Grandma from wanting to take her grandchildren with her. Her son is clearly in not the best state of mind and while we as the audience see a magical moment between Saorise and the sea lions, it would actually be really terrifying experience to find out that your little granddaughter went swimming ALONE in THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT while your son was getting drunk at a pub.

This was really heavily based on "The Selkie Wife" or "The Selkie Bride", which is a traditional folk tale in parts of the British Isles (particularly Scotland). Like most folk stories, it has many variations, but, generally, it goes like this: A fisherman spots a group of selkies (a type of seal-like fairy that could turn human by removing their skin), and then coerces a beautiful selkie into marrying him by stealing her skin while she wasn't looking (she's all "Give it back! I can't return home without it!" and he's all "Well, I have it and you're gonna do what I say. And I say you marry me."). So they get married and have a bunch of kids, all while he's got the skin safely hidden away. Then, through one means or another, the selkie finds the skin and immediately leaves. Some versions have her say a final farewell, or reveal that she was already married to another selkie, or have her sometimes visit while everyone's asleep and leave presents on the children's birthdays. Most versions insist that, despite everything, the fisherman and selkie had a happy marriage - with them getting along quite well, and the selkie genuinely loving her new family.
@ishouldbedoingmyhomeworkno53510 ай бұрын
Oh there is also a Chinese version of this story as well being part of the famed story, The cowherd and the Weaver. Similar to the comment on top of mine. But replace the angels with the celestial maidens who are the daughter of the Jade Emperor. Some have said that the cowherd's cow told or encouraged him to steal. That cow may or may be a celestial being idk my memory ain't that good

Fun fact: Bruno Coulais, the music composer, also worked on Coraline, and the other 2 films directed by Tomm Moore. In an interview, he mentioned that when working with Kila (the band), they blended Celtic sounds, which sound very much like the wilderness. He also said that he was given a lot of freedom with the score and I think that's what makes this sound refreshing.

Now that Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and Wolfwalkers are branded as the Irish Folklore Trilogy, I actually swap Wolfwalkers and Song of the Sea in the viewing order. They were all created as standalone movies but if we consider them a series, making that switch puts it in chronological order. Song of the Sea's ending is also a better capstone when you look at the themes of how all the fae creatures interact and are impacted by humanity. From having complete dominion over all outside of small human settlements in Secret of Kells, to being pushed back and needing to migrate and relocate as civilization expands further into their territory in Wolfwalkers, then finally the state we see in Song of the Sea. People have claimed pretty much all of Ireland with the fae only persisting in small hidden pockets among us in places like the center of roundabouts or in the sea. So many of them were turning into stone and becoming inanimate as a result of their sadness and Macha's influence. Then there's the climax where all their spirits are set free and they depart to their own world leaving only a few remnants behind. It's a kind of melancholic ending but also beautiful.

This movie is honestly one of my favorites and when I showed it to the kids I babysit, it was the only time that I have seen them be quiet for an entire movie and it was wonderful. They loved it and the oldest asked for a selkie coat for her birthday which I made for her and it has made her love seals along with her favorite penguins. I think this movie showed them that it was okay to feel their emotions and not bottle them up like they are thought to in school. For that I think it’s a great movie.

It's debatable whether Saiorse's decision was logical/hard or not. On one hand she has a family that still kind of needed to be put back together and is the one of the only remaining parts of her mother that have. On the other hand, she gets a chance to live a life in the magical world and get to know her mother. I understand why she chose Ben and Conner, she's known them all her life and they do sort of need her. But it we can't help but wonder, why can't the magic world and human world be tangled? Because that's kind of the main thing about this scene, once she chooses she won't be able to interact with the other. And to think this is placed on a six year old it's a bit too much. I wonder what would happen if she chose to be a selkie.
@smolsheep8144 Жыл бұрын
I think the reason why humanity and magik cant be entangled is because either our world right now is too advanced or fragile to understamd the magic, or it just wasnt ment for humanity

A few days ago I found out the name of this film, and of course, I couldn’t help but watch it one more time. I was enthralled. Amazed. It was if I was watching it for the first time. The unique storytelling and the concepts from Norse mythology was so creative. The characters so lovable and interesting. The colorful and detailed illustrations in every scene was just magical, I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Confident to say I absolutely adore this film and all the love the artists, writers, and directors put into it.

There’s an irony in dismissing the father for being dismissive. He has major unprocessed trauma from losing his wife. He was raised by a mother who deals with emotion via drugs and shutting down expression and discussion. He’s clearly depressed and overwhelmed with nobody in his life to help process the trauma. Connor deserved better in this review.

Alright, I need to say a couple of things: 1) Great video Ros Mo!❤ As always, you made it funny and enjoyable. Nice work.👍 2) I found out about this movie 5 years ago when I was searching on Google about animated clips, and one of them was a gif of Ben smashing Saoirse's face to the cake.🎂😂 3) Conor reminds me of Flint🤠 from Mother 3. He used to be a loving, caring father, but after the lose of her wife and older son, he spent most of his days at trying to find Claus and visiting Hinawa's grave. But at the end, he finally leaves his sad past to be the father Lucas once remembered, altought this only last very few moments due to the awakening of the Dragon. 4) There is a little easter egg where Aisling (a character from another movie of Cartoon Saloon, The Secret of Kells) appears in the bus which Ben and Saoirse hop in. Or is the real Aisling or a girl with a really good costume due to Halloween.🎃 5) Right in this moment -> 5:35 - I can't help but laught at Saoirse's expression.😑 6) Happy birthday Ros Mo!🎉🎂

Strange they chose owls for Macha, as she's more represented as an ancient Horse Goddess (usually a Moon-White or Silver-Gray Mare) but owls represent wisdom so therefore all the older women in this film are intentionally drawn owl-like, not just Macha and the Grandmother. Macha's real bird symbol is Crow. ...Another not-so-nice possibility is that (as what often happens in selkie tales) the father trapped the selkie to marry him at first. The mother had to find the key for the chest he kept her seal-skin in. Clues to this possible past is the original key mounted on the wall. Looks like she grew to love him but still had to go back for her health.

I didn't understand how good it was, but the visuals were pretty and I loved it for that. A few years later, I still do love it! Of course the visuals are still amazing, but I see other things nowadays, such as character development, story and just so much amazing things. As a huge geek nowadays, I think my enjoyment of mythology and folklore enhanced this way more. Definitely an underrated film for sure. I dislike most films, but I don't think I can ever bring myself to hate this. I wish this film got more of the recognition it deserves.
