These are great, just made a few for myself, I also use different size hardwood dowels i make on my wood lathe which work great too actually. I find metal push rods can scratch the inside of the dies if you happen to get off center a bit and not notice.

Great video. I'm just starting to do SW method. When doing so, do you always want to push through and out of the bottom or are there times that you stop when it's flush with the bottom?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint7 жыл бұрын
+papajoe529 I almost always stop when it is flush and move to the next smaller die now. It can be damaging to the coin by pushing it through the bottom.

Is 7 degrees a common angle for Swedish dies ? Is it 7 all the way through ? I made a silver dollar punch with 1/2” cutter and would like to make a Swedish die , one for quarters and one for halves and maybe one for nickels to make bells .

Mine are 5 degrees

I use a dry paper towel. I lube the inner walls with Pam cooking spray which is super slippery.
@TheHaelix7 жыл бұрын
if Im not mistaken Pam contains water. try STP oil treatment, a $2 bottle will last you years, and your tools will never rust. it requires half the force to press, and often the teflon stays in place. its thick like honey, clear. the downside is it lets grit to stick to so you must wipe down often. I also use it in the compression dies, reduces friction big time.

Skylar I have a question. every time I use my harbor freight punch set with my 6 ton press it bends the coin a bit. how do I fix this
@CoinRingsfromTheMint7 жыл бұрын
+Ryne Thompson how is it bending the coin? The main possibility would be by using the punch upside down. By using the flat end of the punch instead of the beveled you can avoid bending the coin.
@erthompson227 жыл бұрын
it's bending it a Lil bit after the punch ok I'm using the beveled side I'll try other. also.my press arm is off level just a Lil would that affect it
@CoinRingsfromTheMint7 жыл бұрын
+Ryne Thompson it is really important to have the press level but the main issue is most likely using the punch upside down.
@erthompson227 жыл бұрын
ok I'll try that thank you. if I have more questions I'll get back to you.

Oh yeah I forgot to add, I really liked the Russian music. I hope you incorporate more foreign music into your videos from now on. like you could throw some old Chinese music in there, you know the one, with the lady singing all high pitched and the slow band in the background. you know.

couldnt you just stack the brass plungers?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint7 жыл бұрын
+Randy Hunt Yes you can. But then you need to take the coin out, size it down, re anneal, and re wrap the coin multiple times. This gets it done in one go.
@randyhunt75857 жыл бұрын
I dont understand the difference if you stack them to begin with. Maybe Im missing something butvit seems to be exactly the same.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint7 жыл бұрын
+Randy Hunt You should watch my Swedish Wrap video and you would understand completely. Then you could see the limitations of the brass plungers
@randyhunt75857 жыл бұрын
I think I understand. Would a pvc pipe work with a reducer in the end for stiffening and notched along sides for contraction. Im on disability and only get $490 a month so I try my best to save when possible. Im just starting and still gathering tools. I only like to do things correctly without cutting corners but some of the needed items like dies are very expensive and its taking me quit some time to get the equipment. Sorry to bother you with this but thanks for responding. Most people dont bother.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint7 жыл бұрын
Randy Hunt you can just stick with schedule 80 pipe with notches. That is the key though. schedule 80 is good and thick.

has anyone tried electric tape? I don't use the sweedish wrape method but it works for me for what I do. To me all these fancy tools take the fun out of the hobby
@CoinRingsfromTheMint7 жыл бұрын
+matman8736 Yes electrical tape is what was one if the first things that was used with this method. Some people still use it. The cool thing about all the fancy tools is you don't have to use them. It is totally up to you where you want to go with it.
@b-smiley43327 жыл бұрын
look it up dude. sch80 is only meant to take a few hundred pounds of water column inch pressure. your applying at least a thousand pounds with the Arbor press. think about it man before you put your name on this.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint7 жыл бұрын
+b-smiley I agree with you about pvc being dangerous under load like an air system. I learned that a few years ago when I built a large air system with it. OSHA showed up and made me dismantle it. I then found out the danger. The good thing about the way these are designed is that it could never take anywhere near 1000 lbs. It is slit into 4 little legs. They just bend when they get overloaded. I tested them with my 6 ton press. They are safe as can be. It is totally different than compressing air inside it. It turns into a pipe bomb like that.
@b-smiley43327 жыл бұрын
look guy it's a fantastic idea. and in my opinion there has to be a better material out there that you can use. but I'm just one person. I mean no disrespect. its just the experience with pvc of all types, that I have due to my job, that leads me to feel this way. I'll stick to my "plungers" it's cool, don't get me wrong, I just won't use em. -just one guy
@ronaldamoling88477 жыл бұрын
Is there a rating on the compression stress that the pvc can take? I understand the internal pressure rating, as that has been measured and tested, and as you said, is not pertinent in this case. However, is there any documentation regarding testing the compression of pvc pipe that would show that applying X lbs longitudinally is ok?, ie has this capacity been demonstrated? At first glance, it would "seem" ok, but being in the engineering field, numbers tell the story.
