I think if there was no video review it's likely it would've been a double major, but on review you see Hughes turn away just before the hit is thrown. If they had the same positioning of when the hit is thrown for the entire sequence, then he gets tossed for the boarding.

there is nothing Hughes could've done there. He went to the puck as he should. The issue is Colton hit him in the numbers, early, and far from the wall. Hughes isn't prepared for the impact of the early hit, so he was compeltely defenseless. It's a dangeroud and reckless hit that deserved more than a $5k fine

I agree it’s dirty but my point is that a lot of these young guys don’t recognize when something dirty is coming. You can either slow up, make contact earlier and ride into the boards with Colton, or bail spin when you see him commit to the dirty hit. The last thing you do is coast in with straight legs like it’s a summer skate scrimmage.

Exactly. Why is Hughes not expecting the shoulder hit from Colton? 99 out of 100 times a player in Hughes' position should be expecting contact there. I know Hughes doesn't touch the puck, but the puck is within reach of both players. Colton simply does what most players would do in that situation and Hughes is inexplicably unprepared for it.

Came back to this clip after Luke got absolutely smoked tonight on a very similar play. The kid just does not seem to understand that he needs to protect himself in these moments, and the NHL is doing him, all the players, and all the fans a huge disservice by attempting to police "dangerous contact" like this out of the game. Truly sad for those of us who actually enjoy the sport of hockey, to see it cannibalized by a bunch of suits trying to fundamentally change it into something it isn't, so they can sell it to a different crowd of ppl who do not care about it at all.

I just got home from this game. There were several hits like this that led the Avs to a 7 minute penalty. The Avs in the first period played like shit, but they killed it in the second and especially the third. Lots of Devil’s fans there.

@@willster7851and that was garbage. Officiating in the NHL has been awful for a while. No consistency. I also think the injury angle is a bad way for the league to look at things. Not getting a serious injury could be because of a matter of centimeters. The hit, if it's illegal, should be dealt with the same whether the player breaks their neck or doesn't miss a shift.

As a life long avs fan: I think the calls were correct, Colton got a little out of control for sure. Boarding is what it is, mainly say that cause this game was already aggressive, but the cross check was just so uncalled for. Just didn't need to do that at all for any reason, especially when we are down and now have 7 min of penitently killing to do. Overall, great game to watch!!

100% boarding but Hughes puts himself in that position too. if you watch him skate. first he gets slower and in the last second turns his feet to block out Colton with his hip. thats why he is so light on his feet. if he didnt turn his feet both would have crashed into the boards shoulder on shoulder. i think its a short suspension.

Not the right call. He deserved two majors, the boarding on Hughes was so damn dangerous. He deserved a 1 or 2 games suspension for the cross check and a 5 games suspension for the boarding. Imagine if Hughes breaks his neck and becomes paraplegic? I saw that happen when I was at the arena in Sherbrooke in Junior hockey years ago, the young man who was ifrom behind became completely paralyzed for life. Hitting a guy who does not have the puck from behind 10 feet from the board at high speed is insanely dangerous.

They aren't from what I've seen. You have to call that boarding even if it was a shoulder hit. Then the cross check was just plain stupid. Pretty bad sequence for Colton that could have cost his team the game. If the Devils had any defense at all they could have won. Gave up like 10 odd man rushes. You can't cut Colorado's forwards loose like that 10 times and expect to win anything.

And they're hopefully going to crack down on plays like this at some point. Similar thing happened to Makar a few games ago, and I thought that was super dangerous too. Guys are moving too fast nowadays for plays like this to be ok. Tie him up and ride him into the boards, sure, but don't hit a guy at high speed in a race like that.

And you are right, as a top D guy, he is out of his depth, but he murdered as a third pairing guy. Last year's top 6 was really the secret sauce in my opinion. They all played to their Identity and fit together perfectly like puzzle pieces. In the short term, I also believe losing Nico is way more difficult to overcome than many believe... He sets the D mindset. Hughes gets the highlights, but Nico is really the key to winning imo

This was a hockey play. It was shoulder to shoulder. The issue is the league, while trying to protect the players, has become overly soft. This has also taken place in the NFL. Hughes is 135lbs which is why he flew like a doll. If he wasn’t the size of 16 year old it would not have been of a dramatic of a hit and fall
