I don't think Ross mentioned this, but the game is running a bit too fast. If you looked at the clock, it doesn't tick in real time, meaning that the CPU is too fast to support this game. This game desperately requires a slower computer to work properly, unlike in Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 where no matter how fast or slow the computer is, the clock is always real time.

Speaking of Copyright laws, I’ve find the situation of Midway’s Area 51 from 2005 interesting. Unlike Atari’s Area 51, where the base was completely made up, Midway used the actual base as reference for it’s surface level setting and they needed to get permission from the US Air Force. And by doing so, the Air Force became a minor legal owner of the game. This is not uncommon, the Military has partial ownerships of any media that uses their resources, from Top Gun to Call of Duty, they just can’t make any money from it since they are part of the Government. When Midway went under, the Air Force became the sole owners of the game’s rights. And since they can’t make any money from it, they made the game Freeware. Seriously, you can legally download a game from 2005 for free!

Even TES Oblivion didn't do that properly and that came out in 2006 and that came out nearly two decades later. Though there are always weird changes like that in gaming tech because of one reason or another. Like how games these days almost never have reflections because it's more taxing on performance than it used to be. And I mean *real* reflections, not faux reflections where it's a plastered image barely visible in windows and on metal objects. Used to be they just had a model of your character mirror on the other side only visible through reflective surfaces like bathroom mirrors. That's far too much to do today... although I'd argue it's totally doable if they just limited this function to certain areas with mirrors, even if that's true, they're still not gonna do it unless it's part of the gameplay somehow.

8:34 On the Sega Saturn, everything is made of Quadrilaterals. Squares, rectangles, diamonds, trapezoids, kites, rhombi, pseud-chevrons, etc. While this had a lot of advantages because it reduced the overall polygon count of most models and it also reduced texture warping, it was difficult to produce games this way because nobody was used to it. Also, the Saturn could not natively render triangles, so to create a triangle, they had to create a quadrilateral and give the fourth side a length of 0. This led to triangular objects having rendering glitches because the graphics processor didn't know what to do.
@AbandonedVoid4 жыл бұрын
There were a few games that were made mostly of lines, too. No triangles or squares, but vector lines. I also saw a system awhile back that used circles, and instead of using a cartesian coordinate system it used a polar coordinate system. I think it was an arcade shooter. So not all 3D games even at this time were made of triangles, there were some interesting other systems being used.

If you crash a car with electrical windows into a lake, you should just try to open the door IMMEDIATELY. If that doesn't work,take your car key into a fist and punch the window out, or try to kick out the windshield with your feet. Don't try to do it with your bare fist, you'll just drown with a sore hand. Since you're probably close to a coast, it could be shallow. The pressure will only equalize once the car stops sinking, then you can open the door after a few seconds, so with a pair of good lungs, you still have a chance.

A love of maps and detail is not a disorder. If I got time to kill, I personally like reading ordnance survey maps and following the trails of disused roads and dismantled railways to see where they once were and where they used to go. Its actually a love of exploration. Discovering a whole new world, or rediscovering what was once lost and forgotten. And it goes much further. You have to have an appreciation of this to be worth two cents in level design for games. Though from what I understand Ross, it goes so deep, so maze-like and so complex, your aforementioned lack of passion for DOOM's levels have taken it to an extremity of cryptic bullshit that you do not care for. I don't think your argument holds up at all for 2 reasons: 1. I'm talking about games that have already been RELEASED, not unfinished works-in-progress. This argument only makes sense for people who haven't presented anything yet (HL2 leak, Doom 3 leak, etc.) 2. These situations basically NEVER involve the actual creators. They're almost always about the company that's bought out the company that once housed them. The creators almost always are happy for people to play their old stuff.

7:05 i can totaly relate to that guy. iam red green blind. in elementry school i had problems in art classes but always felt like "ok, the problem lies in know the color" so in the years ive spend so much time trying to learn how certain colors look because i thought i missed that "learning phase" in my early childhood. since i made no progress i tried to avoid that topic at all. i didnt call things by their color (hey, look at the purple car..) because i felt stupid. i never catched up with the idea of beeing color blind because i could see colors. and even after i heard the terms red and green blind i thought i wouldnt apply to me since i can see that marlboro boxes are red. the day that changed was when i had a check for my military draft that basically shattered my "future" by telling me "well sir, your red green blind wich means you cannot, never ever do these certain jobs in the military, police or other free market civil jobs" and splashed 4 sheets with checkboxes on the table. so, within 5minutes, i went from haveing a problem with source unknown to beeing basically impaired.

I know Konami can be assholes but I've never heard of actual illegal practices coming out of the company, just douchey ones. EA on the other hand I've heard stories about, the only one that comes to mind at the moment is that they withheld overtime from the people that earned it, but I know there's more. I know this is an old thread, but I'd just thought I say that Konami, while making questionable business movements, is far from the worst developer out there. When a company buys another and they have software available, such as this game, in the legal brief they should have to declare their intention for the software, re-release, remake, etc. if its not mentioned, then it should be available for free distribution, cause the company doesn't care enough to mention it. their also should be a time limit on software, if you don't upgrade, or re-release the software after a set amount of time, it should be allowed to be distributed changed etc. This would apply to bought properties and not like old nintendo games, cause the software never changed hands. Great video as usual.

Game preservation is far more likely to happen in spite of the law, than because of it. If you're in a sinking car with shorted out power windows you are supposed to wait for the car to fill entirely or almost entirely with water. This is because when the car is full of water the pressure is the same on the inside as it is on the outside so you can open the door relatively easily and swim out. The hard part is not panicking, holding your breath for a long time and not getting eaten by sea monsters.

You can buy glass-breakers for cars that don't have manual window handles. Most of them actually have two functions: to break the glass and cut seat belts (with a little blade inside the handle). Since the glass is actually safety glass you can usually break the glass without having to worry about cutting yourself. If your car is in the water, unbuckle yourself first, and break and remove the glass to get out.

It was proven on Mythbusters that if you wait for your car to fill up with water, you will then be able to open your car door and swim up. However your car will also tip and topple and flip upside down so you loose your sense of direction very fast especially since everything is blurry and you can only open your eyes so much, and on top of that, it gets darker the more deep you go under water. So if you ever crash into a lake, you better hope its shallow, or you are screwed. Anyways in a nutshell, when your in the water in a car, Its best to actually NOT be quick, but to wait for that last breath, wait for your car to fill up and then open your door and escape, and somehow get your barrings on whats going on around you. Chances are if your in a deep river or ocean, swim down in your perspective which will be up in reality. Well most likely anyways. I never drove a car into a river, so yeah.

11:58 it feels real because it's based on real roads. The first leg from Paso Robles to Monterey, it's an area about of 30 × 120 miles shoehorned into the game's map format (~ 6 x 15 "miles" ingame, which you can traverse in 2½ minutes if skilled).

In my experience driving into the deep end of lakes with power windows, the whole system shorts when submerged and for me that was immediately. You have to wait for the water to fill your vehicle completely to open the door. As long as you hold your breath you will be fine.

About the steering, on systems of that era it ran at a much lower frame-rate (and the clock went one second per second) so it's possible that the accelerated steering was meant to kick in after a more reasonable amount of time. (which 'reduces' the issue to a lack of forward compatibility)

The world needs a modern Test Drive game. A cross country race with realistic physics and cops that will ticket you if you go fast near them- sounds like a lot of fun and a bit of escapism for car owners- people with sportscars do this kinda thing IRL.

Tip for surviving driving into a lake: Don't struggle. Struggling uses up energy, energy uses up oxygen, the more oxygen you have, the longer you can hold your breath before passing out, and the longer you can hold your breath before passing out, the higher the chances you'll still be conscious by the time enough water leaks into the car to equalize the pressure. THEN you can try opening the door.

When you drive a car into a body of water (and you have power windows) it is actually best to wait until the cabin fills all the way up. You wait until you can take your very last breath then go under and you will be able to open the door fine. Equalized pressure. Thanks Myth Busters!

Awesome, man! I'm watching your video in 2020 I don't know why, but this Test Drive III game was definitely a game changer for me, I don't know if it was 'cause I was strating highschool then back in the early 1990s, or if I spent a couple of overnights over my newly aquired i386 with full grayscale greys on it, but this video feels just awesome, it explains a lot of things, thanks, man! Cheers!

If you drive into a lake, and the electric windows don’t work, there’s an easy way to break them. If you pull the headrest off the back of your seat, the pins keeping it attached are designed to shatter windows easily for just this sort of situation

9:50 that's exactly how I feel about the early kings quest games. I always imagined something so epic compared to what was actually being shown. Modern games just don't offer that kind of imaginative self-creativity because they show it all.

I know this is an old video, but having an automatic center punch in your vehicle could save your life if you drive into water. They can instantly and easily shatter the side window on a car and can usually be got for $5 at a hardware store

You aren't alone. I love game maps too. I used to draw them as a kid, such as levels from the Core Design Tomb Raider games (mostly the third one and its expansion pack), Half Life 1, video game like areas in dreams I'd had, and even a stylised version of Eat the Path from Marathon Infinity. My school friend Kristina really liked that latter one, even though it was unfinished at the time, and she's yet to see the final map. I was even thinking of using Weland to make that map in the game, though I'd need to find a way to get/make assets for the more abstract parts of the paper map.

Wouldn't the wings on your plane falling off be good in a flight sim so long as it's only due to situations that would rip wings off in a real world situation?
@majormissile55969 жыл бұрын
The FAR mod in Kerbal Space Program can make your wings fall off under very high-G turns, but I usually turn that off because it's not fun. However, in ace combat assult horizon, your wings will fall of when you die and turn into flaming debris, but I don't think that's what ross is talking about.
@IttyBittyVox9 жыл бұрын
Major Missile Exploding is the whole point of KSP, if your wings don't fall off then you did something wrong.

It really is a great example of early 3D gaming, I guess people were having so much fun exploring they just ignored the steering problem. That's my favorite situation, IP holder sits still for decades, fans revive it, and then "Hey we own that, stop reviving it.". :P

The resistance of fresh water is to high for 12v to overcome. So your windows will still work even when submerged. Not to sure about salt water though. Also can't say for computer controlled windows as well
