Yeah, that's my impression as a US American. I think it's more of just "rivalry". Countries tend to be rivals with the closest bordering country, depending on history and culture, and that doesn't mean you * hate* them. Like France and the UK. Lots of history between the two countries but nowadays, it's more just poking fun of each other and just rivalry, but most people don't hate each other lol

I agree that Argentina hates UK the most, but I disagree with the Brazilian thing. There's much more into that than football. There are wars that happened in past centuries, there's Argentinian racism towards Brazilians, there's the fact Argentina is no longer the dominant regional power it used to be and that infuriates Argentinians due to their sense of superiority, there's also football, and probably more. As a Brazilian I like Argentina and I've been there, but I can clearly see why some Brazilians and Argentinians don't like each other.

Europeans are not "Latinos" in the (American) English sense of the word. If "Latino" is used as Spanish, it would change the meaning to "Latin" where Spain, Portugal, Italy, Romania, etc. fall under being "Latin countries" and yes, "Latin" in Spanish is "Latino" so it makes sense in the Spanish meaning that these countries and its inhabitants are "Latinos." This is where the confusion comes from when the word is used in the other language.

Just remembering: Latins were one of the tribes that live in ancient Rome. Because of that, the term was merged many times with Roman. With the expansion of the Roman Empire, several other regions of Europe were influenced and some even became part of it, thus becoming Latins as well. In the American continent, especially in the USA, it was adopted as a racial term rather than a cultural aspect. For me, the same complex problem of usage happens with Anglo-Saxons. Originally separated tribes both from ancient Germany.

Actually the real Latinos are the people from italy, spain, france, portugal and all the places of the roman empire because de original latinos were the romans, the word latin in america was given by a french that wanted to make a diference betwen the america that speak english and the one that speak latin languages, when we speak about ethnicity the people from latin america are not latinos but the spanish people are.

@stone0234 Жыл бұрын
Real Latinos? You mean like the Latin tribe that would give birth to the Roman kingdom, then republic then empire? Most European "latins" today do not have that "original" ancestry, not even Italians. Latins were Romans and Romans was a cultural thing, not genetical. Many Romans did not live in the Italian peninsula (as the empire was huge) and their descendants today also migrated to the Americas aka "Latin America". So you can also say we from the Americas also carry that heritage (I am of Mexican background). Personally I don't even like the term "Latin America" since it was coined by the French to try and further separate Spain from its now independent overseas territories/empire.

I'm portuguese. I consider myself a latino person as a sense of belonging with the other latin European countries (we have many things in common in our language, culture, mentality, lifestyle, etc.). I also considerar myself South European and to some extent a Mediterranean person because, despite I don't share a similar language with the other non latin speaking mediterranean countries, we have also a similar climate and food, which also influence a lot of our daily lives. Here in Portugal we don't use very much the expression "latino" (I think it's more common to use South European or Mediterranean people) but we wouldn't use it also to call to someone from South America (we are also latino, it would be weird). I think that meaning of "latino" as "Hispanic South American" could make sense in the American continent but not in the European context, of course. Regarding the official terms used to include South American portuguese / spanish speaking countries, we use Iberoamerican (= Portugal, Spain and American portuguese and spanish official speaking countries), lusophony or Community of Portuguese Language Countries (all Portuguese official speaking countries). We also have the Community of Portuguese-speaking African countries (all Portuguese official speaking countries in Africa).

Latinos = Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French and Romanian speaking people. Latin America = Spanish, Portuguese and French speaking countries in America. Ibero America = Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries in America. Hispanic America = Spanish-speaking countries in America. Latinos are really all whose language comes from Latin such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, Romanian and its derivatives. That’s why the term Latin America should be used to refer to the group of countries in America that speak Spanish, Portuguese, even French, but if you want to refer to the Spanish-speaking countries, you should say Hispanic America (Hispanoamérica) and “hispanos” (Hispanic ppl). So we can say that all hispanos are Latino, but not all Latinos are hispanos. In any case, being Latino isn’t only the language, but it’s also in the culture, in the character, it’s like a vibe as Andrea and Daniela said and in my opinion, this is something that I don’t see as deeply rooted in french or romanian ppl.

There is a huge difference between the image that the USA has of a "latino", and the people of latin american has about themselves. It is sad that people choose to see the latin america through the eyes of hollywood, (the tacos and narco stereotype). We, brazilians, are latin americans... we share a lot of our culture with other countries of latin american. Similarities in food, religion, language, history, slavery, natives, music... we are not the same, but we share a lot. We have spicy food here in Brazil our Pamonha is literally the same as the mexicans Tamales a lot of countries in latin america eat rice and beans. And it is not a coincidence... the chillis, corn, beans, potato, cassava, are indigenous ingredients. the Camdomblé exists in all latin america (with other names) most of us are mixed, not all, but the majority Brasil is huge, and we are different even between ourselves. You can spot similatiries these roots even in regions considered "white" like the south of Brazil. In Rio grande do sul, you have the Gaúcho... the same argentinian Gaucho. We have the chimarrão (mate), churrasco (asado), music (chamamé, milonga), even our "tchê"(argentinian "che") , sharing roots with Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. We should see the latin america with a different perspective... not through the eyes of the USA or Europe. I, personally, think it is beautiful. The latin america has a lot to offer... so many countries and cultures, but sometimes you can spot this little bit of "familiarity".

3:12 to be fair, latino used to be a term to refer to the Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian that was later changed to referring mostly to Latin American people. Technically Spanish are latinos but it’s obsolete and weird to use the term on them nowadays.

Yes, spanish people are latino...but the biggest difference is because they are "latin-european" and the brazilians, for example, are latin-americans...but Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Romania can also be latino because they speak a language that is derived from Latin. The same happens with african countries that speak some of these languages, Angola, for example, speaks Portuguese.

I prefer to be called Mexican American instead of Latino. Latino means we speak languages that come from Latin, and a lot of people interpret it as being from Latin America, but I have friends from Romania and France in Europe who consider themselves Latin. In Spanish the word of Latin is Latino… hence why it gets complicated. It’s a linguistic term that was applied to a geographical area where people speak Latin languages… I loved studying in Spain and I hope to also visit Brazil someday. I also like these videos so I can learn about other countries.

We call people from the city "Chilangos", so it's a fusion between that and "Americano". On the other hand, I've heard that, people who are born in the US from Mexican parents (from any part of Mexico) are called "pochos". That's what I would be called, which I don't mind lol At least it's shorter than "Mexican American".

The confusion comes in with two different languages taking the same word. “Latino” appears to be Spanish, but it is used in American English. In American English, Latino is a short format of Latinoamérica, and is used to describe people from that part of the world, where the American English usage of Latin (without the o/a) would describe the Latin language, it’s subsets, or the part of Europe influenced by the Latin languages and culture, e.g. Romania. The only usage of “Latin” in American English referring to Latinoamérica at all was in music. That was a case of an incorrect word usage catching on by accident, and it’s still used wrong in the context of music today. No one (except maybe a back wooded redneck who doesn’t know any better) would refer to Mexicans, Cubans, or Argentinians as Latin. They’d always be called Latino, as far as American English is concerned. With that said, if the Brits are over there fucking shit up with that, I can’t help that. That’s on them and them alone.

Latino is anyone who speaks Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian or Romanian, so yes, we Spaniards are Latinos, what we are not is Latin Americans, like Mexicans, Argentines, Haitians, Brazilians or Canadians from the Quebec region , there are also Latin Africans, such as Senegalese, Angolans or Equatorial Guineans.

Exactly, Latino are romance languages countries, and that includes Europe, Africa, and some in Asia. I think that whats contributes to this misconception, is in the name (insted of LATIN America, try say SOUTH America), then you'll never forget that Angola IS a latin country. Because if Latino is ONLY in South America, then what about Suriname (speaks Duch), or Equatorial-Guine (speaks English).

@Τάρτησσος Not only Germanic, they are Afro-Germanic American, because they are black people who speak a Germanic language who were born in America, and it does make sense, since "Germanic" is not a race, it is simply a term that refers to languages that came from northern Europe, just as "Latin" refers to the languages that emerged from the ancient Roman Empire, it is not a race, as some think.

There, we have some cases of people making out in public, like, ACTUALLY MAKING OUT. Two of them: one was inside a Christmas themed house on the avenue, and the other was behind an abandoned bathroom next to the library. (Both happened last year.)
