I always find it funny when people say Twitter is bad, but Instagram is better, or whatever. When basically both services are the SAME, and they just allow people to post comments or video content that they then make avaialbe to stream worldwide... So how is Twitter any better thatn KZbin? Yes, and the more “woke among society” have become increasingly fragile and feckless little critters. The ones that put their lives on the line by hearing an alternate point of view, or read a comment that upsets them, run the risk of severe social shock (SSS for short), and Internet death. It seems that we’ve become magnets for minute details, of other people’s lives over the last 10 years. People are upset at other people about things that will never have an affect on them. Wild how people get comfy with algorithmic content editorializing (sometimes a.k.a. "filter bubble"). Level of personalization of the algorithm is absolutely crazy and somewhat creepy. For example I recently noticed something strange: search function in YT is completely broken for me! Whenever I search for a term only first dozen results are related in any way and almost all following have NOTHING to do in any way with my query. My search on "electricity bills" for example turned out far more music videos(of songs I recently watched) or new publications from channels I watch some times than anything to do with electricity. Now I figured out it's an example of `smart` system not having any granular control (for end user) and being too elastic. I often watch/listen to youtube in background, mostly music and sometimes some lighter content if I don't need to concentrate that much. I start this by searching for a term I'm interested in and let algorithm propose vids that I may like. I generally don't care if it's very accurate result. Fast forward to now: algorithm is convinced that to keep my attention, when I type in "how to tie a knot" it should show me customs of ancient Sparta, something about macadamia nuts and a complete music playlist based around that one earworm song.

I've known about LBRY for a while, but only found out about Odysee about a week ago: through one of my favourite Linux / Open Source channels [DistroTube]. I'm quite impressed with the Odysee implementation so far, and see it's long overdue that a credible open alternative to KZbin take market share. I'll certainly be finding you on the platform!

What I don't understand most of all is why people act like you can't use both or other alternatives simultaneously. Saw this on Odyssey, but came here to drop this comment. What I do is I use KZbin for entertainment & for the few content creators who are never really at risk of demonization/censorship that I watch, & I use Odyssey for all informational content.

I use both, but try using Odysee/LBRY when given the chance.

The only problem with the alt platforms is that its overwhelmingly political or current events content and not just normal stuff like DIY, games or the chill stuff. Glad you are contributing to them to help remediate that issue.

I wish the competitors to KZbin including LBRY and Odysee acknowledged the concept that videos can be watched beyond a monitor, tablet or mobile device. Millions of people have double monitor set-ups without knowing it - a monitor/tablet/phone and a TV. Trying to cast to TV is messy or requires either a dual monitor setup via HDMI or a second computer.

my problem with these other problems is just the lack of content, until youtube finally gets put out of its misery there wont be an alternative
@northshoreguy35413 жыл бұрын
The major gripe I have about what appears to me to be all the alternate "KZbin" sites is a lack of closed captions. I'm pretty much deaf and without cc most audio sounds like, "blah, blah, blah. When that is addressed maybe I can have an alternative to "KZbin."

My problem with odyssy is the momentum I have in youtube - the feed, the videos I have off lined, etc... Ultimately I could just switch, but I'm to lazy to switch.. UNLESS some is my favorite creators started putting the second half of their videos on odyssy...

I'm perfectly fine here on KZbin, rather than going to odysee. Like a few others have already pointed out, the site doesn't work. Too many problems with buffering or not loading. Not worth the effort. Besides, if a platform like odysee were to survive long enough to 1, work and 2, actually be taken seriously, it'd start having the exact same problems as KZbin. Content ID shows up because of big corporations wanting something done about their copyrighted content being distributed illegally. Dislikes go away because corporations don't like being ratio'd. Certain uploaders go away, or get demonitized, because advertisers don't like having their ads run against that kind of content. And KZbin had better capitulate to the big corporations, or the big corporations will pull their advertising and KZbin goes under. Look at Twitch, we're watching it happen in real time over there. Twitch used to be the "haven" where you could do what you want. Use whatever music you want. Then the corporations took notice and wanted it to stop, and Twitch ended up implementing copyright systems that were worse than what KZbin was doing. I see a lot of comments already talking about solving the "KZbin problem". I believe these people are missing the big picture. There is no "KZbin problem". There's a "massive corporations problem." There is no version of this where odysee eventually rivals KZbin in size but doesn't also have all of KZbin's problems. If odysee didn't start trying to manage copyrighted content and "advertiser unfriendly" content and such things, they'd go out of business from all the lawsuits and lack of income due to a lack of advertisers. And if they do capitulate to stay alive, then they'll turn to algorithms and AI and the like to help out because there's too much stuff uploaded every day to manage it via human oversight. So it'll be the same broken mess as KZbin. I certainly don't like the way KZbin handles everything, but I'm also not naïve enough to believe the problem goes away by switching to a worse platform that eventually grows into something better. What's that line from The Dark Knight? You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. That's odysee. Except they might just also die before they even get far enough to hit one of those two endings.

I agree with what you've said and have been thinking along these lines for a while. Perhaps there's some kind of underlying natural law at play here, not just relegated to online communities either. The bigger and more diverse a group or community becomes, the more rules are needed to govern it and the more disconnected leadership is from the culture. KZbin leadership is astronomically disconnected from the culture and community but make radical changes informed by this disconnect and consistently fail to address the needs of creators and users and create more problems. However, there was a time almost forgotten now, where this was not the case and everyone loved KZbin, growth was tremendous and the platform was the next best thing, and the leadership were in tune with the needs of the userbase. You can see similar things with big government and society, and to abstract further, globalisation. One difference I'd like to point out though that should be considered is, advertising is at the core of KZbin's business model, whereas with Odysee I don't believe it plays much of a role at all. This may or may not change but at the moment advertiser influence is practically non-existent on Odysee, as far as I can tell.

I started telling Google to stop showing me all content from sites that I find tell me how to think and doesn't just tell me the facts and let me make my own opinion. Or when I click an article to realize the title was clickbait. I wish it had the option to not show content from that writer and editor instead of the whole site but I don't have that option so I figure the site lets them get away it with so I block the entire site. I don't want to support that kind of stuff. I know looking at it makes things worse.

Once you find and follow enough channels on Odysee the top part of the page will just be those channels videos (and you never need to scroll down and see the weird/conspiracy stuff on Odysee). Also, you can click the three dots, block the channel, and you’ll never see it again (I did this with all the horror flick channels in the Movie section and now whenever I scroll past the movie section its just 1920-1930 public domain movies)

KZbin can be absolutely insane in what they won't allow to be posted though. I write a comment with no swear words, no discussion of wars or politics or pandemics and it might not post because it has one random word that their bot doesn't like which is nevertheless key to the sentence.

You talk a lot of sense. I agree with you. I have been with KZbin since end of 2006, and while I absolutely love KZbin, I have seen it takes away freedom from people. Watching new channels start-up is painful to watch, as they get no promotion whatsoever. Sometimes, companies forget...not everyone has a ton of money lying around for advertising. Doesn't make their content any less valid.

The thing I am most confused about with Odysee is their ToS states they are not able to delete or remove content published on the platform, but they have removed a lot of content on legitimate DMCA grounds, as a more benign example. Why do they make these false claims? How do they handle other violations of their ToS like discretionarily "objectionable" content or other unlawful content? How does the Report system actually work if content "can't be removed"?
@Jombo13 жыл бұрын
That's the core of the problem with starting social media websites, you need people to generate more people. I hope Odysee picks up more traffic because YT is starting to reach the breaking point for a lot of people.

Ever since KZbin removed the video dislike I have found myself wanting to avoid scrolling down to read KZbin comments - simply for the fact that I find myself assiduously wanting to avoid eye contact with the like count-only number underneath the video. It's an abomination. Showing like count only is the best way of misdirection that gives the impression that everyone likes the video, and when extended across the platform, it gives the impression that everyone likes every video on the platform. Some say we now can only rely on the comments on KZbin. Think about it, how many scrolls do you do when you read the comments on a KZbin video? It's censored in a way by default, by the fact that only half a dozen comments will get realistic chances of being read. I personally think there'll be fewer than 10 people who would ever read this comment. Having said that, I still take the trouble of scrolling down to the comment section to write this, because people need to know that of all the alternatives out there currently, Odysee is the one with the highest potential in my opinion. It's nowhere near KZbin, but of course it wouldn't, KZbin has like a decade of headstart. Odysee as it stands however, already presents a user-friendliness that is quite high for a platform that has existed for less than two year. It deserves higher public-awareness, if not for the simple fact that we can't just rely on KZbin alone.

I started watching Odysee for the Darkhorse podcast when youtube removed one of their important videos from scientists about Covid. The platform looks and works a lot like youtube. there was a strange convergence with linux/open source, politically and that was fairly well split left and right, because on the scene, there were both left-leaning academics, and right-leaning business entrepreneurs. There were promoters of Open Source like Eric Raymond, people who supported gun rights and marijuana legalization. In particular Mr Raymond upset people on both the left and right. lol I remember him finishing an Open Source talk at MIT with promotion of 2nd Amendment rights, which he saw as all part of the same continuum of being able to protect oneself and one's rights, literally and via software. Mostly what I see no on Odyssey and other KZbin alternatives, is right-wing political speech and not a balance.

Yes! I am so glad that you're saying this, because I'm sick of hearing it myself. I run instances on the fediverse. One soapbox instance, and one peertube instance, and one lotide instance. They're all completely libre notwithstanding spam or illegal content. I see stuff I disagree with all the time. On the other hand, I see stuff that I agree with that I'm not allowed to see on big tech just as often or more often. My sites aren't monetized, and they're run off of parts scavenged from roadside signs so I don't need to worry about my hosting being taken down, and I don't need to worry about advertisers getting upset because I don't have any. The result is like the internet was before big Tech decided that they needed to micromanage everything that we see. You'd see things that you disagree with, and things that you agree with, and you had to be an adult about it.

I'm all for new, supposedly better platforms, but I need an incentive to go there. And since I don't watch right wing commentators or softcore porn or whoever else gets censored off of YT, the existence of a creator ain't it. It's gotta be: - better performance - higher quality - a better interface - cheaper (if applicable) - etc. just "being in existence" isn't enough to motivate me, because that means ANOTHER account, app, place to go when I just wanna go to the bathroom and put something on... Not something I want to have
