I've never paused and played a video so much in my life... :-) This was super helpful. I have the same exact projector and only have about 1800hrs over the 6yrs that I'll own it this Dec. Mine, out of the blue, just recently beeped and give me a heat lamp warning before turning off. I pulled it apart like you did and just dusted and cleaned it all up - there was some buildup but nothing crazy. I also just added a couple of external small pc fans to it - one at the front to exhaust and on on the left for intake. Hopefully that heating issue doesn't happen again! I think I'm OK, as for a test I ran it at full lamp strength (instead of the usual Eco) for 3hrs straight - no hiccups!

"Life saver" thank you so much for this content. My BenQ had stopped working (just showing fault lights temp/lamp. After opening it up and following the same steps in your video, I discovered a small piece of broken plastic inside (as well as a fan that had been put back in "the wrong way up" I assume from a previous owner)... Anyway.... thanks to this tutorial I managed to clean the unit/fans etc. and is now working again. Saved me buying a new lamp (as that was not the problem). I assume one of the fans just wasn't functioning properly (blowing inward, instead of outward) as well as the loose piece of plastic inside rolling around and possibly getting caught up somewhere. The amount of dust build up was crazy. Mine is a 2013 model so older than this one and perhaps hadn't been cleaned before.... many thanks again 👍😎❤

Hi! I recently replaced a broken chip in my projector (Acer X1320WH model) and I'm not sure about the placement of the big fan(s) next to the lamp (so not the small one that was cleaned in this video). Should they pull air away from the lamp and towards the outside, or towards the lamp and into the projector? Here it seems like the big fan is pointing towards the outside, given the arrow sticker we see on top of it. Is that true for my projector as well? Last time I turned it on, it smelled bad, like maybe it was overheating.....

is it throwing any errors? These do run hot. The exhaust air can be up to 75c. One thing to look at is the lamp housing. Some replacement lamps use the wrong IR cut filter and will dump heat inside. Make sure your lamp housing has a front glass that has a reddish/blueish/purpleish(depending on the angle you look) coating on the front. If its greenish or clear, thats a problem.

@FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! They can get a burn in and its annoying. My guess is the constant heat causes the mirror's structure to warp slightly. They sit in one position for so long under more heat than the other mirrors and then it will always kind of leave some sort of mark. I don't know that this is for sure the cause but it makes sense. Maybe someone else who works with DMD's specifically knows?

the projector warmed up after cleaning in the service and it always turned off after 7 minutes the lamp cooled down and then the projector turned on and the red lamp lit. The lamp is lit 1450h. and the fans spun at 4500RPM. It wasn't clear to me, but when I drove the machine to a cleaning service, everything was fine. After weeks of reading the forum, I got angry and opened my projector and found a flaw in the front fan being turned, which was blowing inwards. I turned it so that the arrow of the fan pointed out and assembled the device. The projector is working, not humming and is well ventilated and the speed is 1900-2100 RPM. service might know this but don't you think? I'm a layman, but I don't hesitate to start everything, and if I knew I wouldn't go into that projector, I still had to. nice day Honza

Hello Frank, Excellent video! I have the exact same model. The lamp blew and shattered and after I replaced the lamp, I experience the exact same issues (it would run for about 3 minutes and then shut down from over heating). Turns out there was glass trapped in the same fan as in this video. I followed the steps exactly, including cleaning out all the dust from the unit but now when I plug the power in, it does not power up (nothing engages). I only get the green light on the start button and the red light on the power button. I verified that all the connectors were plugged in correctly on the power board and the on main board. Double check the alignment between the low voltage power supply pins and the mainboard. That is the exact symptom of it being offset by one position. I'm referring the riser pins that go through the metal structure and let the mainbaord plug into it. It's super easy to offset that connection. Guess how I know? :)

@FixitFrank8 ай бұрын
which fan did you clean? there are 4. If your old lamp burst, then the issue is probably in the blower fan. I recall that the exhaust fan should come on(the larger fan) once the lamp reaches temperature(after a few min). If you can get it to run for a few minutes, then you can check the service menu and see what fan is throwing the error. It could be the DMD fan, power supply fan, lamp blower fan or exhaust fan.

Hi, I have a BenQ W1400. The projector switches off after about 15 seconds, with the power light on red and the Temp light on green. Please do you have any advise on how I can resolve the issue ?
@FixitFrank Жыл бұрын
Hi! It kind of sounds like a jammed or bad fan. If you had a bulb explode recently, then the blower fan in the middle would be suspect. I have not worked on a W1400 before but I suspect it has 3-4 fans inside. If you physically see all the fans spinning, then the hall effect sensor inside one of them went bad. But if you had a bulb burst recently, then check inside the fan nearest the bulb and see if you can spin it by hand(might need to use something small to push it). I bet its jammed and then a piece of glass falls out. Either way, the issue is almost certainly a fan problem.

I always question the lamp first. they are the easiest to replace and you can return them. then the color wheel is a close second. After that it might be a bunch of things. I'd suggest starting with a new proper lamp(not from amazon) and see what happens. Or it might be a thermal issue from a cheap lamp or clogged fan. If the case is really hot when it shuts down, the thermal breaker is popping. a good cleaning might solve it.

I have a BENQ W1080st, the lam works for a couple minutes playing movies and such then the image distorts the colors and subsequently shuts off. Do you think its overheating like this one and it might just be a lam problem or something else? Thanks in advance.
@FixitFrank Жыл бұрын
Hello! That sounds like a color wheel to me. The flickering of colors is very common when the color wheel is worn out. The lamp only generates light, and the colors or picture stuff are all after that. I have some videos on color wheel for other models, but the steps are the same for your 1080, check my color wheel videos for ht1075 or w1070. same steps.

I have this protector and want to service it myself but I don’t want to get dust on the sensor. How do I do that? Also after the second lamp blew up there a high pitch sound. What do you think is the cause and how to fix it?
@FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
To clean the projector, watch and a follow along with other videos. There are quite a few on this model, the w1070, w1080. They all follow the same general steps. Take your time, take lots of pictures of what is plugged in where, before you unplug it. Slower is better. Less chance for errors. Never force anything. If it's not moving or seems too tight, make sure you didn't miss a screw or clip. Use the right tools. The noise could be a bunch of things. If the second lamp exploded, it might have damaged the color wheel and the blower fan. I'd look around really well inside where the lamp goes. If you see bits of thin colored glass, you might have a damaged color wheel. The fan that I cleaned in this video made a lamp explode too. That is the fan that I think is bad in your projector. If you lost the lamp, color wheel, and the fan, that is going to be more expensive and a lot more work than a cleaning. It's not impossible but like I said above go very slow and document your work so you can make sure you know parts fit together.

hi frank, my projector lamp has exploded. (I have a Benq 1070). I bought a new lamp and did all the steps you describe in your video, and a piece of glass was stuck in the central fan, like you. @FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
I would check the service menu first(also make sure that fan is tightly plugged in). Press the menu button, then press enter/source buttons at the same time. You should see some boxes on the top of the screen with a number 1 in the first one. Use the arrow/enter keys to move around the boxes (I think its box 3 or 4) and find the error screen. It will show you why it shut down(fan error or temp error or lamp error). That will tell you where the issue is. The fan you see not spinning does not start right away but it should have started within that 10min. It might be bad. I have had to change those in the HT1075. The w1070/w1080, ht1085/ht1075 all share the same chassis with slight variations. The troubleshooting steps apply to all the models. I have a few vids on the HT1075 that might be helpful

You may be hearing the color wheel going bad. Be sure to check all the fans. There are three or four of I recall correctly. One is in the middle under the main board. There is some heat paste between the DMD and heatsink but I would not replace the paste until you find the sound origin.

Frank, a quick question for you. From your experience, if a fan in a projector needs replacing, is it a good idea to replace all fans at the same time with new ones? I really open my projectors every 700 hours and clean them as thorough as possible. But what happens when it is time for a fan to say good bye? Do we sent all the family at once to paradise? :) :)
@FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
I don't think you need to replace all of them. Only the fans that feed or take air from the lamp are really going to feel the abuse of the heat. The power supply or DMD fan will not have the same thermal load. As long as they stay clean, the other fans should last quite a while. It comes down to how much you want to spend in my opinion. If the cost is not prohibitive to buy all new fans, then it can't hurt. Many service manuals even say you're supposed to change the fans every 5000 hours which is silly in my opinion.

Last night, I turned it on and watched a movie, and that was fine. Then, soon afterward, it shut itself off,overheated. Power light flushing red and Temp. was green.. what causes it? Would that be cooling fan?
@FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
Cooling fans would be my first suspicion. The W1080 is almost identical to this one inside. The large fan that acts as exhaust would be something I would check as well as the blower fan that I showed in this video.

Frank just an update. I found the culprit, is the fan close to the speaker, it doesn’t spin. I took out without taking the pcb. I disassembled the fan by popping the fan blade. The coil and the magnet In around the fan, it seems to be okay. What is the supply voltage of that fan? I have multimeter to test from negative chassis to supply voltage.
@paulponce70893 жыл бұрын
Another add up to update. I took took out the printed circuit board out to gain access to the blower fan next to the power supply. To test that fan, I improvised to stuck a cello tape halfway on the duct opening (running it without the lamp assembly) the blower fan blows the cello tape and it makes the tape slapping around the duct hole. That seems to be okay. The power supply cooling fan running good. The color wheel spinning good. The fan next to the speaker not spinning, and I think this causes the green light TEMP in just one minute. BTW, Frank mssg me the voltage reading of that particular fan. Thanks a lot.

I have seen your video "BenQ HT1075 DLP Video Projector Repair - Flickering Picture" and suspect that this is the problem. To verify I measured the voltage over the lamp, which was 135V. I know that in your video you said that bulb should get ~300V, I have not been able to find any information for what voltage the lamp in the th670s should have. Do you know what voltage it should get? if it's supposed to get 300v then it is likely that it is the same problem? Best regards Oskar

Hi Oskar, the 380V should be DC and measured at the input to the ballast. Measuring the actual lamp voltage is kind of difficult. It is high frequency AC so a normal meter will not read it properly. However I personally suspect you have a color wheel problem rather than a lamp driver/ballast problem. Let me ask. When the image flickers, was it light to dark or sort of like colors shifting or changing erratically?
@oskargert36323 жыл бұрын
@@FixitFrank I would say it looks like a light to dark flicker. The color is kept pretty consistent, just gets dimmer. And its not really erratically, cause it happens in the same spots. You can see a video of it here: filebin.net/11xwakc0pguswh7w

That might be a color wheel, but it more looks like Arc wander. Do you run in Eco mode a lot with that lamp? If so, put it into standard mode to clean the arc points. I don't think your ballast is the issue at all. The flickering would be substantial and the image would be more dim across the screen. If you use eco mostly, there is a chance the lamp might be bad. If you use eco too long it leaves scale on the tungsten electrodes causing arc wander and eventually the inability to strike an arc.

@@FixitFrank I just bought it a couple of days ago, but the previous owner claims that he has used eco mode a lot. So that might very well be the case. I guess I can buy a new lamp to see if it solves the issue. I’m just worried that the previous owner already tried this. Because there are signs that someone opened the lamp hatch and the lamp timer has been reset. The previous owner though, clams that he hasn’t ever changed the lamp and that he’s had it since it was new...

Just letting everyone know, Frank was right. running the lamp in normal mode and turning up the brightness to max has solved my problem. I have no more flickering and am super happy. Thank you @FixitFrank for your awesome help!

Hello Frank! im Barbie from argentina! I have 2 Benq ht1085st, I owned one for a long time and its working perfectly just asking for a Bulb change... then I got another one on eBay " sold as new" and after a few uses the projector started to heat up and shut down... I followed your video open it and the lamp was SOOOO HOT! VERY VERY HOT I could not even touch it with my hands. I did not know if the problem was the lamp or the fans so I tried changing the lamps between projectors and I ended ups with this situation : New lamp on older projector heats up and shuts down, old lamp on new projector also heats up and shuts down... old lamp on old projects works fine. I HAVE NO IDEA where the problem is... bad lamp and some other issue on the new projector? H E L P !! thanks !!
@FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Might be a little of both. However I would definitely check the lamp blower fan that feeds air into the lamp assembly. I have a video on an HT1075 that overheats that also had a bad exhaust fan. The lamp assemblies will get too hot to touch. That is normal. The exhaust air temp should be 60-70c(roughly) so it will be quite warm but it should not shut down. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYe1k3-PaL9pf68

Thanks for your interest ... If I left it for like a day and come back it goes back to normal .. I think there is some thing wrong with sensor ..that I couldn't find
@FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
I did some reading and that may be due to ambient air temperature. If the room it is used in, is over 20-25c it may activate the fan into highspeed even in eco mode. The lamp still generates a lot of heat in eco. This seems to be normal operation for the projector. Being that its intended use is for classrooms and conference rooms, they must have designed it for better cooling instead of better noise control. The only thing I can think of to look for is dust build up near the fan blades. If dust builds up on the fans the shape of the fan is no longer efficient. This leads to cooling problems. I think you have no sensor problem, but please check for dust build up. That would cause extra highspeed fan operation.

mi youth projector overheat how to repair, how to resolve fan and temperature sensor error
@FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry I am not very familiar with those. The parts are impossible to find and they are so cheap to replace that I never get them in for repair. However I would check the fans since it seems like one is not working. The fan should have a sticker with its part #. you can find it that way.

HOLA Frank! Again from Argentina .. I have a Benq 1085st and had the lamp button red and after one hour of movie would totally power off. Took it to a service place here in argentina where usually People are not honest and they said problem is : repair fan and temperature curcuit....and price is around usd200 to fix. I know how to open and how to change a lamp and usually i can fix some things...i cannot change chips and so.. mbut...i think im Being scammed. Can buy a spare part order online and fix it myself? Help me 😉😘
@FixitFrank2 жыл бұрын
I think you can fix it. I don't think you need to change any chips. If it runs for one hour or so, that means you can check the service menu for fan errors. I suspect you only have a bad fan and no repair to the "temperature circuit" is needed. I think they made up "temperature circuit". I never heard of that. My guess is your exhaust fan or lamp blower fan is bad. Turn on the projector. Then press menu button so menu appears. Then press Source and Enter button (on the projector) at the same time. Some boxes will appear on the screen. Use the arrow buttons to go to box 4 and then press down and you will see the errors. Usually it will say "Fan x error: " and then the amount of fan failures recorded. X is the fan number. There are four. Usually the exhaust fan is the fan that goes bad but it can be any of them. They just plug in so no soldering is needed. If you have access to eBay or AliExpress you can source the fans or I have a contact in china I can share. Let me know what you find in the error log.
