Hi Frank. Thanks for the great videos that have given me confidence to attempt repairs. Hope you don’t mind if I ask your advice on my w1070+. The power light is continually red and other buttons, fans, lamp etc unresponsive. There appears to be an issue with the mainboard as I have tested the power board, ballast and colour wheel with a w1080st+ mainboard and they work fine. By touch and with a thermal camera, the DLP controller chip (DPP4422-he) of the w1070+ is particularly warm. I’ve tried reflowing it (30sec at ~230-250DegC) but no change. I’m wondering about giving up or trying to replace the DDP4422. I wondered if you had encountered similar DLP controller issues and had any success with replacing them or other BGA chips? Thanks
@FixitFrank Жыл бұрын
Thanks a bunch for the kind words! I have not replaced the DPP4422. My understanding is they have firmware on them that needs to be flashed that I don't have the capabilities to do. I have not been able to confirm that though. If I am wrong, then replacing it would be an option. I have seen them go bad a few times. Optoma more than BenQ but I have seen it on BenQ. But, I have also seen this happen with bad voltage regulators and shorted TVS diodes on the HDMI ports. For what its worth, the W1070 service manual(level 2 or 3) has a great schematic in it. I would make sure the PMD1000 is okay and producing proper voltage. The only way I have solved these (bad DPP chip) is to replace the mainboard. I do this because I need to know 100% that a customers projector is fixed. If I replace the DDP chip and it fails then that is on me. If it was my personal projector I might try changing that chip because if it fails in a bit, then no one is going to yell at me. I'd suggest downloading the SM, then rule out the PMD1000 and any secondary VRs on the mainboard. If that all checks out, then a mainboard is your best bet. If you email gydz@timeprojetorlamp.com, they have access to mainboards(used but good) and they ship DHL and take paypal. I've used them for 6+ years now and never had a bad experience.

Hi. I have problem with hdmi ports, and i have question to You. First my Benq w1070 had problem with HDMI 2 port(no signal), but i used only one of them, but now HDMI 1 lost signal to. HDMI 1&2 ports are death... :( i checked regulators UQ 1,2,3,4,5, and they are ok, chip ADV7612 is not burned(i have new one for sure, but not installed yet). Questions - this long thin chip 5:00 is next to HDMI1 socket?(And HDMI2 to?) - if i take out this thin chip, everyting should be ok with HDMI 1&2-signal? (My 5x diodes for hdmi 1, and next five for hdmi2 are still in one piece) Ps i see "service menu" on screen etc, only HDMI ports are death :/ EDIT/UPGRADE: - probably i have phisical problem with HDMI 2. Maybe dirt, or not tight socket becouse i moved HDMI plug with signal and now i watching movie (for test) New question: I haven't HDMI 1 before ,so where is problem? Problem od with chip from "analog devices" company? Or with this small, thin chip next to HDMI 1? Next question: you had problem (on your pt3 HDMI repair) with HDMI 1, or HDMI 2?
@FixitFrank5 ай бұрын
The TVS diode array was the problem here if I recall correctly(the thin chip array you mention). But definitely check the inside of the connector.

QUESTION PLEASE .. dlp projector , tries to lite bulb but nothing .. no power is going to bulb on my meter.. color wheel spins and cleaned.. tries 3 times and shuts down with bulb failior light ?.. has new bulb that works in another dell ... fans all work , door switch good ... would it be ballast ?...thanks, kevin
@FixitFrank4 жыл бұрын
It is actually not possible to measure the lamp voltage with a normal meter. These use high frequency AC(20KHZ or so) to drive the lamp and use a 5-10KV start up pulse. That can nuke your meter. Your best bet is measuring the input voltage to the ballast. If its 380VDC when you press power, then the main power supply is good. If it's 170V or so, then your main power supply is bad. If you have the 380VDC, then the ballast would be suspect.

Thank you! This was the problem also with my projector. Changed color wheel, changed lamp and finally removed HDMI chip, which solved the problem. :)
@FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Its weird how those just shut down the rest of the electronics when they get hit. I mean it makes sense but you'd think they would design it to be a little more robust in that regard.
@ArmandsKoncus3 жыл бұрын
@@FixitFrank More weird is the fact, that after burning HDMI, I used VGA for 2 years without problem. So the problem arised over time. :)

Great job Frank!! Blown diodes, hmmm. It's a first that I heard that diodes can blow from a surge, at the HDMI input. When my IC has shorted, I has a capacitor shorted on the top of the board. If I remember correctly, it was C267.
@19mati675 жыл бұрын
I had, not has, sorry about that.
@FixitFrank5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Tibor! Always good to hear from you! I checked that cap too. I had originally thought it was the power IC that I think you had issues with at some point. The 5V going to the regulators was only 2v. Once I isolated it to the one regulator getting very hot, I found the 5V returned until I put power back to the HDMI chip. I think it got hit via the HDMI 2 port. Still have no idea what that little IC is for. I couldn't even read the part#. The fellow who owns it, uses a PC to drive the input so if the chip has to do with HDCP he should be OK. I have a pair of MX710s that I should use to see if that chip is to do with HDCP. I'll put it on the list!

Hey, thanks for the video! Is there a way to test a lamp outside of beamer? Should it show some oms with multimeter? After the my bulb exploded, new one just doesn't light up, so i can't understand whether the new lamp is defective or some other issue is there.
@FixitFrank4 жыл бұрын
These are arc lamps so they do not have a filament. They are more like a metal halide. Technically they are Short arc mercury vapor lamps that use a ballast and high voltage ignition. On an ohm meter they should read open/infinite. I would suspect the new lamp is OK as long as it is of reasonable quality. Instead, check the small fan that forces air into the housing. The fan I mean is shown here kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5zbYaCCr6mUrKc in the middle. It has a brown connector with yellow red black wires going to it. They can catch pieces of the old lamp and jam the projector. Check out this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/epPLd4mBet16jLM Its kind of a general troubleshooting DLP projector video. It may get you to the solution. If not, let me know. There is more you can check.
@maqdev4 жыл бұрын
@@FixitFrank thanks for the reply, I'll check that. How much voltage should be on the lamp input? 380v? I can probably measure that too
@maqdev4 жыл бұрын
I've checked that fan and its working. All other fans and the color wheel seems to be working as well. I also noticed that the beamer doesn't detect whether the lamp is actually installed or not. So it won't indicate that lamp is failed. My current assumption is that probably lighting board is dead...
@maqdev4 жыл бұрын
@@FixitFrank I did some more investiagtion. When I disconnect lighting board (ballast?) from either the power or from the main board (control?) it does detect that the lamp/board is failing. Considering all this, it's either power board (output to ballast), or lighting board...
@maqdev4 жыл бұрын
Oh i just found this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJS8d5ybrJeMgZo which answers directly my question. Thank you! Happily my lame attempt to measure voltage on the lamp input didn't worked otherwise at least my meter would be dead and maybe even me (facepalm)

hello I don't have an image on hdmi 1, can you give the symbol of this chip?
@FixitFrank3 жыл бұрын
I recall this uses one chip for both HDMI ports. I would check the TVS diodes that protect the chip. They are made to short out to protect that IC from damage. You will see the small rectangle parts right behind the HDMI plug. You can desolder them without causing any other problems. If you desolder them and the input starts working, then your problem is the TVS diodes. If you still have no image, then the HDMI IC is bad. I do not recall the part# at the moment, but I will update this later once I can look at the service manual.

Hello Frank, thank you for all these videos. I have a InFocus IN8606HD projector with error in fan2 ( DMD fan) . After replacing the fan with a new one, the error appear again and I found the problem is missing 7.5V from the fan driver. I connected the fan2 and fan1 in parallel and the projector is started, everything seems ok, but can not detect any signal source - nor HDMI, VGA. Can you give me any ideas where to look for the problem?
@FixitFrank4 жыл бұрын
See if you have a chip marked PMD1000. That is a popular power supply chip and tends to fail.

Hi ! Your vidéos are awesome, maybe you have an idea on what can cause a resonating noise near chromatic wheel on W2000 when source is 50hz? (No noise with 60hz source). A small hit on the projector make it stop and it côme back randomly (sometimes no noise during hours). Maybe you have some idea ? I can send you a video but i do not have your mail .
@FixitFrank4 жыл бұрын
That is interesting. I have never run into that. You may want to try tightening or loosening screws nearby the wheel to disturb the harmonics. My email is listed on the about page if you need it.

It is doing it when vp is upside down and not when set on a table

You are welcome! There are no original color wheels to my knowledge. Color wheels are generally pretty simple. What problem are you having? It might not be the color wheel at fault. If you put a new lamp assembly inside, be sure it has a proper IR block lens or it will make the color wheel act like it has problems. I have had color wheels arrive with bad motors. It is rare but it has happened. Every wheel I purchased from Time electronics was good though. I never had a problem with their items.

You may need to adjust the index position of the wheel. Also if you have lines in the picture, check the seating of the main board. It may not be seated properly. The service menu is accessible by pressing menu, then press source and enter buttons at the same time. Use the arrow keys to navigate to position 3 or 4 and then down arrow to the color wheel index. Then adjust the number and watch the image.

Lots of talk about the color wheel, in fact, lots of talk about many potential issues. However, almost no talk about how the projector acts in these various situations. Using the color wheel as an example, when it goes bad, does the projector still turn on? Does the lamp still come on? Does the projector come on but with no lamp? Are there lights that come on? Does nothing come on? How can we relate our issues to what we’re watching without watching the entire videos? Tell us the the symptoms or how the projector is acting, first, so we know what the heck we’re watching for this goes for part one too. These could’ve been great videos!

I can see you only watched one or two videos. I literally go over all this on other videos but you decided to be condescending. You might have bothered searching the channel. But you didn't. There are over 200 videos...that I post to share info for free! I could put this all behind Patreon. Maybe I should... Why would I talk about all the different situations when this is an HDMI repair? You literally left the most useless comment. It could have been a good one but here you are....
