That brings back memories. The Mayflower was my local while I was studying. I had some great nights there, 25 years ago. Quiz nights and lock-ins. I didn'r know at the time that my father used to go there in the 1970s, when all of the old dock buildings were standing (and mainly derelict). They messed it up with the awful modern chicken coop housing. Typically, the nicest and most valuable places are the old buildings that survived the developers' wrath. Same story almost everywhere. Architects have done more damege to London than the Nazis did in the war.

Wonderful area I know well. Generations of my family lived there & I often walk around soaking up history. They lived in an around Cherry Garden street at turn of the 20th century & census shows that some were "scholars". One became a scientist who helped develop an atomic warhead for USA, another a journalist for London news agency, one worked for American Cable Co in the city, artists & head teacher. Just to prove not every poor family was uneducated. They were also used to happily mixing with all nationalities bc of the proximity to docks.

Many years ago there used to be a film studio opposite St Saviour's Wharfcalled Mill Street Studios which played host to many well known actors, now sadly gone. I had the pleasure of some 1st class lunches at reasonable prices back then. If Joolz had walked round the corner he'd have seen the fire station that was used in the opening credits of the series London's Burning. Also Butler 's wharf was known for its spices, many's the time I'd be typing up documents and the whaft of nutmeg would make its way across the dock. Different times

Dire Straits played their first gig on the estate. A plaque has been placed on the building that some of them lived in. Deptford is rich in history. Among others, Chaucer, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Francis Drake, Christopher Marlowe (who was murdered there and is buried and commemorated in St Nicholas churchyard), Grinling Gibbons, Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn have connections to Deptford.

Your information is a bit out fella...The video starts in Shad Thames, SE1 which is Bermondsey not Rotherhithe. Jacobs Island, which featured in Oliver, and St Saviours Dock are also in Bermondsey. Nice to see St.Mary’s church, where I was christened, married, my Mum and Dad married there, also countless other family weddings, christening’s and funerals. My Nan lived dead opposite the church in Adams Gardens Estate. The Mayflower used to be called the Spread Eagle not the Ship. If you walk past the church towards Rotherhithe tunnel you’ll find the Ship pub. I also had my wedding meal in the Mayflower in June 2019...

Unfortunately when he returned to England he couldn't get his licences back so he bought himself a rowing boat which he used to pick up driftwood from in and around the Docks. One interesting fact about the Surrey dockers is that they held the world record for conventional loaded in a day just over 500 tons and coincidently one of the gangers i believe was called the iron duke

Fun London Guides You are right Rotherhithe and Bermondsey has always had a reputation for being a bit rough around the edges which i don't buy into at all. It was from the fifties up until quite recently the crime capital of Britain but these people were professional thieves bank robbers and alike. I have drunk with quite a few of the old faces and everyone of them was a gentleman. To be honest there has never been a hint of i'm big time with any of the villains i have known

@Joolzguides7 жыл бұрын
Ah yes...I wonder if it's really true. There are a lot of these legends around in London. It certainly looks old inside though.

The Wiki says this: "What finally became of the Mayflower is an unsettled issue. Charles Edward Banks, an English historian of the Pilgrim ship, claims that the ship was finally broken up, with her timbers used in the construction of a barn at Jordans village in Buckinghamshire. Tradition claims that this barn still exists as the Mayflower Barn, located within the grounds of Old Jordan in South Buckinghamshire. In 1624, Thomas Russell supposedly added to part of a farmhouse already there with timbers from a ship, believed to be from the Pilgrim ship Mayflower, bought from a shipbreaker's yard in Rotherhithe. The well-preserved structure was a tourist attraction, receiving visitors each year from all over the world and particularly from America, but it is now privately owned and not open to the public.

A shame as I said before 90 % of this video of Rotherhithe is actually in Bermondsey!! As soon as he walked west from the Angel pub at the start of the video he was no longer in Rotherhithe.I know because I am born and bred here.I still live here in fact. So maybe if he does another Rotherhithe tour he will go east past The Mayflower pub where he will find the rest of Rotherhithe.He will venture along Rotherhithe Street itself which is the longest street in London at 1.5 miles long,which is not even mentioned!!. Maybe invite me next time so your followers will know that you are actually in the place you say you are. There is so much of Rotherhithe and it's history you missed but then you would if you was in Bermondsey wouldn't you.!🙂 I do genuinely like your tours but get it right mate, especially when you are talking about my neck of the woods!!. It would be nice if you reply to my comment as you did not last time I made these observations.

Another great video, Joolz. But do watch out, you need to maintain the same quality in videos about places you know less, as you've established in places you know well - such as your own Manor in Primrose Hill. The fact is, you really didn't hit the spot in this one, and that has to be down to lack of research, Fact is, this is one of the most working class areas of what was in the past a working class riverside, and its history is tied up with poverty and privation. How on earth could you not mention the story of Alfred Salter whose cat statue even figures in your vid, as does, fleetingly, Dr Salter's statue itself? The story is a heart rending tale which says more about Rotherhithe history than just looking at ponsed up warehouses. The Temeraire stuff was good, but more research would have disclosed that two chairs St Mary's church were made from timbers from the old ship. Surely that would have been worth a shot or two? Similarly, the Rotherhithe archive/Sands Films building: a stunning way of seeing a warehouse from the inside, terrific idiosyncratic cinema etc etc. Did you even know about it? The success of your vids is that they scratch below other ordinary tourist guide perspectives of London. This one was fascinating - and I enjoyed it - but I didn't really feel you'd matched your own standards here. You should go back, shoot more and re-edit. On another matter, the view of London from Primrose Hill is rubbish compared to the one from the Wolfe statue at Greenwich... Jes winding you up... :)
@Joolzguides5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I like the view from Greenwich. Also from Forest Hill is good. Oddly enough you didn't mention the error I made about Fagin. He didn't live there. Yes, this one was an older video and the truth is it's a lot of hard work and no one pays me. Actually all my videos miss things out and frankly I should be on TV. If I had the time, money and production team to make proper films they'd all be very good but KZbin insists on you uploading regularly. I don't even like making films. I only want to be a presenter...but hey ho. I'm glad you like the films, thanks.

Very good Jules! Just in regards to the part where you were near tower bridge there's the dock where people were hung... There's a double story house boat? There's some good history about that boat. I've stayed on it, actually. From memory it used to be used by royalty to watch boat races in the Thames. It was then bought up by a family for a song after it was disused for years and left in that place. Message me if you want to know more! 😊

Oh yes! I think I've seen about that on tv. Is it a very high end luxury rental apartment now? Sometimes used for tv and films too.. Or amI thinking of something else?

Fun London Guides - Julian McDonnell Films I'm taking about the barge-type thing that's to camera left around the 1:40-1:50 mark. Once upon a time I had dated someone close to the owner. We sat out on the balcony with the rise and fall of the Thames. You can air bnb it, I believe but you'd not want to be prone to sea sickness, to wouldn't believe how Rocky it is.

The food at the Mayflower is (or at least was) good. When we moved back to the US we decided the Mayflower would be the place for our last meal.

I don't understand how you walked right past Dr Salter's statue and ignored it. A very poignant story and surely worth a mention.
