I was sanding a section for painting prep as a young 'shade tree' mechanic and got a very small piece of metal in my eye which didn't seem to bother me too much at first . Low & behold it started to irritate more & more so I went to the eye doctor and he used a magnetic device to pull the metal fragment out of my eye . He said if I had left it in there, because of the saline environment of the eye, it would have begun to rust effectively burning a whole through the eye to the cornea causing severe damage and loss of vision too ! Metal in the eye is serious stuff .

Dan leave once side of your brake locked and don't close the other side all the way and it will give you a rounder bend instead of a hard brake, helps alot when you are doing those slight bends you needed in the rear repair. I'm not much of a welder but I am learning a lot here. My 57 needs this exact same panel. But my question is, is it safe to weld so close to the gas tank?
@FransvandenBergeMuziekschuurАй бұрын
If you make incisions (cuts) in the material you will be able to curve it. After shaping it in place you weld those cuts shut, then grind them smooth and now material that has been stretched and bend can also curve.

Check out Cleetus McFarland's stretch 57 chevy limo and see what was started and then never finished... just forgotten since 92 very rusted out more door to stretch limo. Proof that time is a killer of any vehicle .... its started to sag in the middle making closing the front doors way hard. I hope he has enough people to make it work. I am sure that you have seen videos of Fitzee doing custom work... just bits and pieces of metal tacked into place. Grinder, bondo, paint makes em look right nice and all out of scrap. Plus no fancy tools. He uses the same stuff you have plus pieces of pipe and old tools to hammer the metal into the shape desired..... and like you, a master in your own way of doing stuff. Not everyone is like say Scott from coldwar motors. He still uses strap metal but he understands all those complex curves and can do some amazing work as well. I think his paint skills set him apart from many people who give it their best and for some reason it never works for them. Everyone has talents and not everyone uses the same method. Doesn't make them wrong, just different. Having a lift fairly soon might just make your days ahead a lot easier.

Looks good maybe wipe some filler or skim coat on the lead spot. How much does the bumper cover? It not a big noticeable spot maybe spray it with red primer like you said and spray it white so it would be darker. Not too late. but maybe ? It looks great for a winter beater for dang sure. under coat and send it. Its a pretty good looking car I really like it. finsh the white paint on the top parts And who cares if its not off white. Looks clean. I would drive that baby its pretty good.

Hot metal and eyeballs def do not mix. I once had a welding spark land on my hardhat, bounce inside the welding helmet, hit the inside of my "safety" glasses and hit the old eyeball (fortunately the white part) Still hurt like hell. Tossed everything en-route to the eyewash station and then got yelled at for not wearing my ppe (which I figured caused the injury in the first place). At least the cold water of the eyewash took some of the sting out. Nice seeing all of that old rusty crap being replaced with new sheet metal even if it is pieced together. Once welded in and sealed up she will be good for another 50 years.
