Laurie. Sounds like the right decision. We do this sailing thing for fun, not as an endurance test. Enjoy the rest of your trip. The west coast of Scotland is special.

I have always found the hardest thing about outdoors adventures is calling something off, its really easy to second guess yourself. In the odd occasions I have overreached I have thought am I going to die just for nothing but a little hubris ?

Very honest and clearly the right call. In my head I can sail anywhere for any length of time but 24 hrs of little sleep onboard and I’m totally done in ! We are all very lucky to have the opportunity to mess around in our boats, wherever we end up going 👌⛵️

Hi there Laurie (correct?) and Jill. Found your channel a couple of days ago researching boat handling - great stuff, direct and to the point, good graphics. Then saw this post. Totally agree on your decision- making. Cold and tired then exhausted is a horrible situation. Especially in the middle of the North Sea! And excellent - didn't know about the Shetland Bus. Will investigate.

Well done, absolutely the right decision, after all the sea doesn't care whether you are there or not, plus it's not going anywhere.

Hi Laurie and Jill. Thoroughly enjoying your trip so far (one we have done 3 times ourselves!) and totally agree with your decision. We sail as a couple and my wife does not enjoy night sailing which inevitably means I do the dark hours betwen 10pm and 5am. I also suffer from the cold and by 5am I am virtually immobile. Therefore we keep night passages to a minimum, only go in good conditions (we have made the occasional error in this repect!) and in warm climes, such as crossing Biscay or SW England in the height of summer (?!). We also find that we need a day or two off after a night passage to recover so we gain nothing over coastal hopping, (assuming that is an option). Ps - we seemed to have jumped from 8a to 13a, are we missing some or are they about to released?

Wow you are proper veteran sailors! We would love to hear your top tips for places to anchor. We wanted to get to Scalloway in time for the Shetland Bus memorial, and anchorage-hopped to get here, so have not had the chance to put all the legs together. We have a few days off now, so will be publishing the missing bits over the next few days. It is a bit confusing to release one out of order, but the single-shot ones can be done on the go from an iPhone, which in this case allowed us to let friends and family following us know that our plans had changed.

@theboatcheat1204 hi Laurie, didn't get as far north as Shetlands but lots of anchorages in Orknies (although Stromness and Kirkwall both delightful. Loch Eriboll (Ard Neackie) on the N coast and one round corner we used Antares Charts as the bible of where to anchor. If you haven't come across them yet then can strongly recommend as brilliant. Look forward to the other videos in due course!

We anchored in Loch Eriboll, in Rispond Bay… beautiful spot!
