i think it’s worth mentioning too that the contact patch on a round wheel gets wider as you wear it down, which kind of compensates for the wheel getting smaller!

Good point but square wheels do this as well. All wheels especially F4 will get wider as they get smaller. Makes sense if you think about it!

The reason I like 56mm conical fulls is because London's streets are crusty af, and rough and crumbly. A fat square wheel hardly ever hangs-up, but is harder to skate, you cannot get away with not popping your board with clean snap - round wheels are way more forgiving but they're always getting stuck in cracks and shit.

I got two wheel setups, one for cruising and other for tricks once i get to the spot. Cruising i run 60mm 78a sqare. I'm more into transition, so runing natural higher trucks does not bother. But man, big soft wheels changed the game for me. Since got them I have not pebbeled into the shadow realm neither once.

I feel like since square edged wheels have more surface area it’s preferable to not slide out as easily imo. I’ve noticed when turning sharp going fast on small round wheels with a small surface area I don’t have as much control. I really like that you’re making videos like this touching on both sides because for rounded wheels I prefer them for technical skating like ledge dancing. Thanks Ben!

thats what i used to ride in my late teens early 20s. When i stepped up to 8.38 i jumped from 139 indys to 159. Bc i wanted more hanger lock in and i wanted to do cross hanger nose grinds. I wound up gravitating to the SFW mike anderson and conical full shape....bc it was the only way i was able to still get great pop and load up pop similar to when i skated an 8.13. Yet my bag of tricks plummeted as well from the 8.75 axles in exchange for faster skating, bigger airs, and more transition skating/all terrain. Still TBH if i were to ride a smaller board id probably ride ventures or thunders just for the lower weight and more "street" oriented feel and response. I never had more tricks on lock though than when i skated 8.13 and 149 thunders and 139 indys. One day ill grab an 8.38 ishod symetrical board since it has a smaller nose/tail than a typical deck...finally got a set of 144 mid hollows to return my popsicle skating to a more standard form. If i like skating normal size hangers i may try 8.35" AF1s with an 8.38 deck. IF not ill jump back to 8.75 to try the ace 60s. To compare them to venture 6.1s and the 159 standards. Stuck with 8.75" for so long bc id ride them on a 8.38 or 8.5" deck...then a 8.8-9.25 shaped deck or quiver up once i got the ventures. So i just really got used to riding trucks that size regardless of my board. Now that ive hit 30 i want to put a setup together to see if i can approach doing a wide array of fliptricks i once mastered just for personal goals sake. Plus it would be nice to have a few more GO to tricks at the local pyramid.

love your videos Ben. I always want to go skate after watching, but you're right about knowing when to skate when you're old, injured, or both. its the worst when you still feel young, but you're body has already taken some beatings. im 30 and usually feel good, but with my various ankle and knee injuries over the years, i have to know when something's not feeling right and take a few days/weeks off. it's hard, but knowing the balance is key. sometimes you gotta push through the minor injuries, and sometimes you just need to sit at home and watch skate videos lol

IDK ever since i rode 99a mike anderson SFW wheels back in 2014....ive never stopped riding that shape be it any other brand that offers a 99a-101a conical full shape. Those wheels/shape contact patch were a complete game changer for how much wind-up....POP explosion pop i could load up on bs 360s and full cabs. Paired with bones med or bones hard bushings for an ultimate POP/platform off the run of your deck's nose/tail....insane ollie impossibles etc...The weight, contact patch, shape etc was just perfect for bs360s. Really makes the board feel stable when its spinning for 360 variations or big spins. Also they really encourage you to skate FASTER so much stability and confidence inspiring feel with a conical full wheel. They just make you want to really carve and slash up the park. Set up for some nice tricks etc they make every aspect of the session so fun IMO. Including powerslides

A better tipping point on classics for flipping but you're better off with tablets or conicals going down stairs and gaps because I'm sure without classics flipping the board isn't much of a problem if you have the trick youre tryinf locked so I'm sure it's not a huge trade off, I'd rather a bigger square riding surface for a higher chance at riding away down stairs and gaps with the less tippiblity upon impact if you land off at all lol. I hope that made sense.

Round wheels flip better only because the riding surface is smaller due to the narrow contact patch. If like me you use narrower trucks with square wheels, the board is gonna tip just as easy (actually more easily) as a wider truck with a round wheel. Square wheels wear down slower and won't change contact patch width as much as a classic shape. Tablets are actually narrower than classics at the same diameter so they probably weigh the same if not less. So yeah the only real advantages of round edge wheels are the grind clearance and compensating for a wider truck.

I just started skating again about 10 months ago after a 10 year hiatus, so I’m right there with you! I skated classic shaped wheels for a few months and switched to conical fulls after that. Definitely lost some consistency in some flip tricks but gained some consistency in longer grinds. I’d say the difference is negligible in the short term but definitely noticeable over time as you look back at your bag of tricks as a whole. May switch back to the rounder shape for my next wheel. I also think growing up skating the skinnier rounded wheel plays a significant part in this discussion.

Well @BenDegros, I have been going through some wheels madness too recently. From riding square wheels for quite a while now but in different sizes though I have noticed that mostly the riding surface affects the flipping of the setup quite a bit. What you mentioned that a round wheel would be easier to tip is related to the skinnier riding surface in my opinion and not the round edge. Because of a narrower riding surface the edge of the riding surface is further to the edge of the board which has an effect fot tipping your board an a tre flip or other flip tricks. Also the thing about crooks does not make sense to me that a round edge makes it easier to crooked grind. It is rather the riding surface again which allows you also o pinch better. Those are only some thouhts that went through my head recently. Cause I did not have problems flipping my board or crooked grinding on OG-classics. But I have tried the 55mm and there I have noticed quite a change for my flip tricks due to the weight and width of the wheels. Why don't you try to make a video on big wheels and flip tricks. You can try on 55mm classics and see how that effects your flip tricks and pinch though :)

I'm very curious to watch this video and see how wheel profile effects skateboarding. As an aggressive inline skater I find round profile wheels much more meaneuvrable and even helpful in getting less wheelbite on certain grinds. When I think of square profile wheels they just seem old fashioned in blading to me at least, they're supposedly more stable, but in my opinion they've got nothing against round profile wheels! I also find with round profile I can get them to wear evenly with good rotation, admittedly square profile don't seem to wear in the same fashion they just eventually crack and chunk out. Round for the win for inline at least. 🙌

Another great vid. I have noticed when doing 50-50s on curbs or coping, I pop out way more with a rounded wheel. There is definitely a difference in being able to lock in with more square wheels. I've also noticed that powerslides seem to be easier to get into and control with square wheels. Same time, I slip out less on transition with the more square.. Feels like there's more traction. I'm open to new stuff, but I guess I'm in the square camp. The easier it is for me to turn the deck over with the rounds, the more I land primo or magically end up primo with the edge of the deck in my shins. Keep making videos. These are great.

I like this one, a lot of the physics takes in this one seem pretty good. But like you admit later, it might just be your perception. Like the square edge meaning more friction for grinds. That would be true theoretically - if you were making perfectly flat contact between the wheel and the grind surface - on both a y axis and a z axis - but that's nearly impossible. You're making contact with a very limited area on the wheel, because you're not going to be at a perfectly 0/90 degree angle - and unless that angle is perfect, it's going to be pretty much the same with either shape. I think most of the other stuff holds up tho, especially easier flipping. Probably easier to do railstands/primo stands with squarer wheels, possible one wheel manuals as well...I tend to associate them with freestyle tricks

I got jumper's knee too. I had an mri before covid and just an couple weeks ago and its gotten worse. A piece of cartilage tore partially from the front top (mcl), poping in and out behind my knee cap then tore off and went into the swelling behind the knee. The thing thats helping is resting with legs up above the heart, against a tree for example every 5 hours to allow draining. And weight training, lunges, backwards leg lifts, keeping the muscles around the knee strong to support it when jaring skateboarding against and into ledges and curbs and stuff. It only happenes to my front knee after lots of kickflips and slides and grinds. And compression socks and tensor knee brace with the side supports and knee cap cut out when needed helps.

@anhiirr

i designate them to ppl that rely or need to ride cored wheels.....or low trucks to "GET it done" i skate parks mostly and lack that CORE friend group that skates "street" now that im 30 and most of them either quit or have a family of their own to build. Unless i plan on returning to my old days of skating slow and tech/ledge skating i wont be skating low trucks or small profile wheels...though i ride sqared edged wheels in conical fulls...You really have to be seasoned with how they lock in and pop out of slides bc you can get tossed from a fs nose pretty easily if you arent toe heavy and ready to lock into your base plate. Swapping form indys to ventures was a learning lesson lol. You loved how indys lock into nose slides and nollie/fakie tailslides until you lack that metal baseplate contact with ventures and have a lot of sticky wheel heavy activity. Then again theyre perfect if you want to do a 270 out or shove-it variation. I just like the stability/response of conical fulls in transition and how enabling they are for riding fast and blasting. Granted it is a double edged sword at times with ventures for how slide heavy the setups are that i ride in these often slick/dusty parks. Its really nice to blast/carve through a flow section and at the bend of a back knee slash a lil power slide right into a bank to box. I couldnt do that type of combo with indys but blasting over lip is much more ideal with indys. From a preference standpoint. The lock in for girnds is nice in transition when trying to maintain speed wall to wall or doing a lil multi trick line/combo. You definitely grow to get used to this overall ride/offering that the conical fulls bring to the table...once i go back to a roudned edge i only really want a radial full bc of how much i grew to enjoy contact patch. I cant ride lock ins or side cuts anymore. Unless were talking a smaller 8" or 8.13" deck with lows like a purpose built ledge/street setup...its a real catch 22 to most of us non pro level skaters...either have a wider bag of tricks on flat/ledges with smaller wheels or slim wheels with hollows or lows....or more ideal setup in transition/high speeds with a wider board/shaped board and wider hangers/heaveir when doing airs...ive rode titanium thunders and its all nice and fun when doing street oriented skating or trying to do a bs flip on a cutty bank wall that you have to wallie/jump into before you flip the trick the board feels so light/responsive....then you blast off a vert/qp hip and the board feels like a toy....no response/feel mid air before you ultimately feel the weight/impact of the air when you land....its verry jarring in itself. Yet the deck feels like a mini when trying to flip into a ledge of are skating a fun box/ledge bank to ledge etc...the board feels so easy to get onto the spot/maneuver. IMO quivering is KEY. Does get costly at times but if youre really into skating nothing beats a quiver.
