When ever I see o-rings being changed I think about when I was a tech for a scuba shop and would service high pressure regulators. I was taught to service regulators by a Mares designer/technician and he was adamant about using the correct tool to remove o-rings. He used dentist pics, he got them from his dentist who regularly discarded his old ones. He said that if you used screwdrivers, nail files etc to remove the o-ring there was a possibility that the metal surface that the o-ring sat on could be scratched and a leak could be formed. But with a dental pic, the slight curve got under the o-ring without scratching the metal. He also said that the o-ring should be lubricated, for Scuba/air, it should be a silcone grease and for liquids the lubrication should be the liquid itself.

When you pour from a container, pour so the exit is on the top or at least down the side, that will let the air in as you pour and stop it surging, you will get a smoother flow.

In case you two forget just look how Emily has grown to how long you've been here on boats. What a treat to see her on the helm and fishing good family togetherness and then the boyfriends start, ha ha. Those engines now sound really sweet Simon so well done you but how you find all this time is a total wonderment.

Modern diesel engines commonly run oil temps of between 95 - 105° when running at speed. It's always good practice to write date and hours on the filters when you change them.

We are looking at a boat which has twin inboard diesel engines. Smaller than this but its good to see that self service is possible. Buying the boat is only the initial cost, and we are currently doing a spreadsheet of annual, bi annual and five year servicing costs on the Volvo Penta engines which our target boat has. It's all new to us although we have sailed for many years and done some routine diesel engine maintenance, these massive twin engines are more complicated. You managed all that work with minimal mess, which is great. I hate seeing dirty engine bays.

You need Simon a electric circulation fuel pump. To circulate the fuel that removes the water in the tanks and filters out that black microbes microbes in the fuel. You need to put in fuel algaecide right away for your tanks are now filled with those microbes. So sooner the better to start circulation in a loop though a filter. No fun be caught on the ocean with clogged engines. We enjoy your videos

Basically a 2 micron bypass filter system to continuously clean the diesel fuel. The same idea is valuable for engine oil. Bypass filters shift the micro debris before it can get into the engine bearings. Clean oil also lasts longer. Lab tests will show when the oil needs to be changed.

Het guys that a cool video on the engine service regim, Simon does just do it with his eyes closed doesn’t he. Now I’m not a spanner man or should I say I dont engage with it unless it Absoloutley must be done which I’ve done in the past. So this video helped bolster me as I want to do a diesel course. I have a stern drive boat but i am looking to get a single engine shaft drive boat. The future of boating for me and Deborah are that i do all the engine annuals myself or we have to give it all up. Thanks for sharing. Can i just say it was lovely to see Jemma on the camera. I would just say if anyone bullies her rad this. I was a bullied at school, dont know why i am no one special. But the guys who used to bully me and get other less brain worthy boys to bully me are all wasters today, i see them outside the pub most days smoking looking like real losers. Now with parents like you Gemma will be looking at the bullies in the same light as she and her brother will do very well as they have great role models. Mark xx

I notice you used elbow fittings on the galley water pipes. JG Guest is pretty stiff so fittings needed. Polypipe is more flexible (like the early Hep2o). You can often plumb a sink with no elbow fittings. Better flow, less to go wrong and less cost.

don"t know if you have the same problem in cold water as tropical, there is a algae that forms between the water and the fuel, just my two cents!
@shaunwade1103Ай бұрын
Diesel Bug is the name given here, but with a scientific name of Hormoconis resinae. It is indeed an issue here, and it will thrive in most climates as it is quite a hardy algae. Likely more so in climates where it is cold outside as you warm the inside of the vessel, that differential in temperature results in condensates which increases the likelihood.

Sorry. Me again. Engine oil should run around 120 centigrade because it evaporates any moisture that gets into the oil. Cold starts and short runs will allow combustion gas water into the oil. 135 C is the absolute maximum to avoid oil degradation. Fully synthetic is ok to 150 C (300 F). Older engines of course should not be given synthetic oil. It’s too thin and blows by piston rings and turbo seals.
