Had a similar problem with paint reaction on my wheels, turned out to be residual silicone based tyre slik spray that I had been using previously...- had to strip it all back and start again so another lesson learnt! Great series!

I went to the same paint place this week...Monday think it was. Was £13 for the paint to be mixed in Peugeot ETS, but they recommended their lacquer so got that as well, came to just under £30. I've got part of a door to paint on a family member's 206 - wanted to get it done this week as I've been off, so of course we've had constant rain...

When I did mine,I didn't need filler but I bought 2x filler primer 3x colour 2 X laquar(large cans) A few sheets of assorted wet and dry 4 tack cloths. 2 packs of playing cards and a roll of 3 " masking tape Total cost was £79 from the automotive paint supplier and £5 for the playing cards ,wet and dry and masking tape. Took me a full weekend to do 4 X 16" fiesta titanium alloys (which are a pita 15 spoke design.

I did my 18” wheels on the Freelander 1. The main advantage is that if you use the spare, you never need to take your car off the road. Did all 5 and got a good result. Went for anthracite and managed to mask and paint the centre caps.

It takes a surprising amount of time to DIY refurbish a set of wheels... and it's not cheap as you say. I got bored of it and tend to get them powder coated for £20-30 a rim nowadays, but it is pretty satisfying to give an old set of wheels a new lease of life! I think they've really transformed the tomcat!

Panel wipe degrease before painting, don't apply too dry or it won't stick properly. I don't go finer then 800 grit so as to give the paint something to grip to.

Don’t worry your tea is the right way around usually on rotation on Tires they say rotation with the arrow above moulded into the letters. But if it’s just showing inside outside then you good as long as the outside of the tire is facing out that’s all that matters so you can put in front to rear left to right doesn’t matter

I had my wheels refurbished inside and out powder coated dark bronze £185 for all 4 including tyres on & off..so impressed with the finish gave him more than he asked for..

Ah I had this when I got MG ZS 108 wheels on my mx5. Got them balanced and they run so smooth over a year later

Check your cosmos there's actually two types as I discovered both in 16 inch and same diameter. If you have the standard rover size centre cap (54mm or 55mm depending on who measures it) you have the later Rover 45 2001 onwards style cosmo, if you have a none standard cap you have the BRM wheel worth a lot more to the BRM purists at a centre cap size of 63mm as they both have different centre bores!

These came from Nitrosilva, and from a well known 400 so we know they aren't BRM sadly, although apparently that means they are stronger

The big problem with low profile tyres, rim damage from kissing a kerb or hitting a pothole, even a dropped kerb can often be high enough to damage, but parking within 5m of a dropped kerb is not polite for the person whose access it is, even worse parking across it. ( neighbours or their visitors take note ).

I have been refurbishing the steel wheels on my little Nissan van each time I needed a new tyre; when you factor in the cost of 2-3 aerosols per wheel and your time, however good the preparation is the final finish is not going to be as good or as durable as a professional job, either with paint or powder-coating ; I now get all wheels done professionally. Powder-coating should last indefinitely unless you get some damage, paint easier to rectify..... I have done them both ways and am undecided, but the DIY approach is more trouble than it's worth, as I think you have concluded yourself !

Yeah when i did mine it literally took a day and a half of prep work, mine where in much worse condition mind you. Came out well and have lasted so far but if you have the money professional will be better.

Me and my mate spoke about this. DIY vs getting someone to do it for you, any task. Once you factor in the messing around factor, for that extra cash you're basically buying your time back.

What have we learnt? No good ever comes from a rattle can! Another cracking video forget the finish the entertainment was 100% . The Tomcats looking great I feel nostalgic as I only ever got as far as a 94 214Si in Nighfire Red/primer lower!

Hi Matt,the wheels look nice to be honest,it looks like a chrome silver instead of a Matt silver,I would clean the tyre paste off and dress them.prep is the key,I've refurbed some KA wheels and I was chuffed with the results.

You have done a great job to be fair, not the easiest wheels to work on either. They are such a nice design too and glad you stuck with the silver as it really shows off the design - very reminiscent of Minilites actually! That Q-bond is intriguing- I am really interested to see how they work on the plastic trim on the Volvo - maybe do a comparison video on plastic repairs on old trim as it’s such an issue with trim on cars - especially at work. Great video as always Matt 👍🏼 We used to mix and use Holt paint at Halfords which was top quality and yes had great nozzles but now they have got rid of the mixing in store (enjoyed that 😭) and now use a brand I have never heard of. It’s called progress apparently 🤔

Yes I remember buying mixed paint there and it being good but the current stuff just doesnt just doesnt flow nicely and the colour match isn't the best. I think Q Bond is American, it goes off very fast and seems tough, it'll be interesting to see how it does on trim - that must be a constant nightmare for you with brittle old plastic

Did identical job on my wheels last year. Did basically as you did. Good quality paint pays off. I also warmed paint up in hot water as you did. They do take a good while to harden. I did the inside of the wheel first to practice. Lovely job. Love the doggies. 🐕 🐕

Nice job. I did my 5 on my vert but one at a time and had light to see what i was doing with each one and I did wait as well rookie error matt, mine lasted 3 years with the paint refurb kit of EBay before I went for powder coating, yes it's a cheap good way and you feel like you have done something but a few quid more and dropping the car off and a shop doing it is priceless and prestige wheels bristol did mine :-)

You got a nice looking result there my friend! There is another thing to consider about getting a pro refurb on those wheels, is they use proper two part paint systems. You may want to set your expectations quite low regarding the durability of a rattle can job, a year or two of looking nice depending on use / weather exposure. As you're doing so much painting lately might be worth getting a cheap compressor and a decent spray gun? I went the cheap compressor / cheap gun route and it didn't go well...

I had the exact same experience with proper paint shop cans and Halfords crap. Was painting one of my mk2 Polo's doors in Maritime blue (original paint) and it was essentially purple. Worth going to professional paint mixers.

Be interested to see how you get on with the Uniroyals. I have them on my MX-5 at present and find them to be awesome grip in the wet but can be a bit unpredictable due to the soft sidewalls in the dry. On a RWD car they 'let go' a bit quicker than my old Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2 tyres. Pressures are key on the Uniroyals. 2-3 psi can be the difference between good handling and wallowy side walls. Should be a world apart from the 10 year old tyres though!

As you say prep is everything. Washing the wheels with hot soapy water to get rid of the silicone as a first step is vital. If not you sand the silicone into the paint. Result fish eyes and bad adhesion. £200 for the pro finish v £160 and killing yourself for a day to get a worse finish. No brainer really. As you were fitting new tyres your tyre place would have probably removed the tyres for free before you did your painting. Did you get a full balance done or will you leave it for a 100 miles for the tyres to settle in? Did Mike breath in a lot of paint fumes?
