The poster is a blow up of how they are actually printed in magazines, using CMYK pixels.

CMYK *dots*... magazines don't have pixels! It's called a halftone pattern, the technique was used when printers could only print using 4 colours to create the illusion of more colours.

Starting and cutting out moments after letting go of the ignition start position is a classic symptom of a dodgy oil pressure switch. On SD1 models, you get power to the fuel pump through the ignition switch when cranking the engine over. When it fires up and the key goes to the run position, the power to the fuel pump goes via the oil pressure switch. It's a safety feature to cut voltage to the in tank pump and stop the engine if you lose oil pressure. Easy test is lift the carpet and rubber bung behind the back seat, run 12 volts to the plug on the tank sender unit and the engine will run.

But he's not using the electric fuel pump -- that's why he's jury rigged a fuel supply using petrol in the red plastic container and a hand squeeze pump to feed and pressurise the fuel filter.
@brianwhittington5086
@brianwhittington5086 Жыл бұрын
@coopdivi I'm talking about when it's got a factory system in place. Those HIF SU's with the fuel chamber and float in the base don't work well with a hand primer, unless you are constantly squeezing the primer bulb to keep a constant even pressure. The chamber isn't a big capacity, and a car running on choke will empty it very quickly. You really need to replicate the system by having a small electric pump to constantly push fuel in on a jury rig like that on SD1's. The carburettor SD1 has a sealed fuel supply and overspil return system. On carb equipped cars, there's a small submerged pump in the tank that keeps a constant low pressure, no other pump in the system. It doesn't cut in and out like some fuel pumps. The system is designed so the sealed vane type pump runs constantly under start /run conditions at low pressure. They work similar to a torque converter on an auto gearbox, constantly maintaining fuel pressure on demand, and it will spill back through a vent hole if resistance overcomes the pre-set pressure. They are notorious for getting sluggish, or sticking on cars that are laid up, or constantly run with very little fuel in the tank. The pump relies on fuel to both lubricate and cool it, I've found a shot of 2 stroke oil in a low fuel level tank helps keep the pump free, not 2 much or it will smoke badly. I wish I had a pound for every one I've taken out and revived by running such as WD40 through it by swapping the pump direction polarity, so it pumps each way until it runs smooth and almost silent. Never yet had to fit a new pump to any of many I've owned or repaired. The EFI models have a different high pressure fuel system.

@@brianwhittington5086 Very informative Brian, but I think what's puzzling James is that he got it running previously using the same method, and now it won't run. Personally, I think it's a combination of a dodgy battery and/or connections, a sticky/badly adjusted choke cable, and out of tune carburettors. But who knows? Maybe the moss has crept further than we think!
@brianwhittington5086

@coopdivi If you're absolutely certain fuel isn't the issue, the next thing I would check on any series 1 V8 is the ignition balast. It is the flat alloy block, with a wiring connector on each side, bolted on the l/h inner wing. They fail and can give spurious fuel starvation or misfire like symptoms. You can bypass the affected circuit(s) by bridging the connectors with a short length of wire. You need to look at a wiring diagram for that specific year and model to see the circuit layout and detect which pins to bridge. I did a few back in the 80s, usually just one, or sometimes two jumper wires may be needed, and they will run fine until you can find a replacement. When Series 1 V8s were plentiful in breakers yards, that was one of the first things to get sold. The balast alters the voltage to the coil on startup. They will usually fire held on the key, but will petter out as the inner balast circuit takes over, the circuit gets hot and breaks down. What causes them to fail could be high resistance in any engine loom related connection or earth in the engine bay. I used to keep a spare in the car and knew the part number for the item when I ran series one's. From memory, it's a Lucas made item, so say no more !

So satisfying to see the car being cleaned! You should have taken a before and after shot. The car actually looks really soild and nice now its been cleaned. Its just a shame that all the rot is underneath the car. I really hope you can save it. I'm glad you've put a videos out about this car even if the major work doesn't happen for a while. I'll definitely be happy to wait because I know you will do an amazing job. I read the entire thread about your Police car about 5 years ago. Incredible build, safe to say that not many people would have taken that on, and even fewer would have been able to finish it to the high standard you did!👍

Hi James, can't help mention it, but your pressure washer hunting like that means you have a leak on the high pressure side - assuming it is not something obvious, like a split in the hose or connection, if it is under warranty, get it in for repair or replacement. I do work for Karcher (in Aus) and have done warranty repairs on these, and other higher-spec models. Best thing at least is that if out of warranty, they do have replacement parts available, unlike most other brands where you're expected to just go buy another one :-)

Hope the ripoff merchant with the wipers etc is stuck with them, I virtually gave away a whole car when a lad wanted it for parts only to find out he sold it for big profit and the new owner has it on the road. Ireland is a small place and eventually word gets out about who to avoid.

Could the failure to start/keep running be caused by the fuel cutoff switch? You know, the device which trips when you hit a tree and prevents you (and the tree) burning to death.
