Part 2: 2000 BMW E46 318i Automatic Transmission Service

The BMW E46 318i has just over 150000 klm. I thought it was a good time to do the transmission oil change. This is part 2 of 2 and covers the pan cleaning and installation of the filter/gasket/pan and oil re-fill process. Overall it takes about 3 hours, but it took 4 due to filming.
Note: My videos are not a tutorial/how to. I am not a qualified mechanic so please refer to your workshop manual with your work. Do not use the content on my channel as a replacement for a workshop manual or mechanic.

How much litres you put in transmission?

Usually the fill hole is also the level, so when it starts to pour back out its full. Just make sure you go through the gears while filling and not allow the oil temp to get hot. Im sure theres instructions online.

Check trans mounts and universals, they can also give vibration/noise.

I cant remember right now, but refer to manual. I just nipped them up as they are low torque. Just do not overtighten!

There are no instructions to do so. But I suppose you could add a slight amount onto the gasket itself but I never had an issue with leaking.

How come your gasket has got 5 holes on the front and back but the pan has only got 4?

Dont know why that would be the case, except perhaps the same gasket is used on another pan of the same shape... Doesnt leak at all tho.

Hey buddy please if you can help... If i checked my transmission oil and it looks so dark so i can't do the service??? My car transmission fluid gasket is leaking and people here in egypt telling me if i changed the fluid i will lose my transmission so they suggest just to fill what i lost from leaking

There is lots of information out there about this situation. Some say if oil is already bad the trans may be already worn so no point changing. Others think changing is good as it will make the trans last. But i was told that trans flush is no good, just drain and refill as only part of the oil is drained, so new oil mixing with old is a soft option (like they told you). Really your decision in the end.

Up to you, if in doubt get an experts advice but not changing is the same as doing an engine oil change without a new filter.

Cant find it mate, sorry. I just rang the independent BMW supplier here, gave them the VIN and trans model and they got it in for me.

The first video shows this. However I got the oil that was specified as OEM replacement so that it would mix with the original oil. Be very careful what you decide to use...

Check on the side of the gearbox, just above the sump on either side. You will see a sticker with the model number. Should be ZF or GM, both take DIFFERENT fluids make sure you know what yours is.
