Part 1: 2000 BMW E46 318i Automatic Transmission Service

The BMW E46 318i has just over 150000 klm. I thought it was a good time to do the transmission oil change. This is part 1 of 2 and covers the pan cleaning and installation of the filter/gasket/pan and oil re-fill process. Overall it takes about 3 hours, but it took 4 due to filming.
Note: My videos are not a tutorial/how to. I am not a qualified mechanic so please refer to your workshop manual with your work. Do not use the content on my channel as a replacement for a workshop manual or mechanic.

Hey mate thank you so much for this video. I have the same car ( E46 318i 2001). Your video was so helpful. I changed my fluid I reckon about 4 hours all up . My car took about 5.5 liters of fluid. I accidentally brought the filter for a commodore so i had to file down the bits of plastic sticking out on the top of the filter. My car has 225000klm, the oil/fluid was black and stinking with lots of crud stuck to the magnet . The car now shifts like a dream. Its great to have content on an M43 318i. Lovely to see content from a Australian based channel. Thanks Doug

The box looks in good condition - on the pallet was not particles friction clutches.

Hie guys can you please assist me with my car is 2000 model BMW E46 318i Automatic . l think l went pass through a big stone in the road and it hit my gearbox pan folding it upwards but not breaking it and l managed to get home and parked the car .Then the next day l started the car and as l try to put the car in drive it is stopping at the Reverse(R) slot even if you try to force it to reach the neutral (N) and the Drive(D) slot it is bouncing back to the Reverse slot infact its not getting in Neutral nor Drive(D) .I suspected the sound l heard underneath the car yesterday and when l checked underneath l could see the gearbox pan was damaged it has folded a bit upwards but its not linking any transmission oil .My question is can this damage of folding the pan upwards cause the car not to engage in N and D and how can l fix the pan to be straight need you help guys.

You need to fill until it starts coming out of the fill hole (car must be level), at the right temperature (30-50 degrees C). This may be around 5 litres. I did this twice (drain and re-fill) and it took 10 litres all up.

we have the exact same car, would it b horrible if i just used an off-brand filter or going with oem would b better? does it make a difference?

This is just me, not a recommendation, but i went with an after market 'oem quality' made in Germany part. I bought my kit from a bmw parts shop where i also bought the fluid. Saved me many hundreds of dollars this way and had no issues since. Its always a gamble when buying after market, but certainly dont buy chinese ebay stuff.

I wouldnt know. Check your vin number and reference it back to realoem.com. It should state what the details on that website.

This is way beyond my skill set.. if it where mine I would either get a pro to rebuild or get a replacement (swap out with the busted one) as this would be the best way. Auto box's are not easy to deal with compared to a manual box.

Any number of things... are these filings found on the sump magnets, and/or in the oil itself? Generally, any metal found would indicate a serious problem and most likely eventual failure. When my fathers peugeot auto box failed, it had lots of metal in it and this was caused by the internal pump failing, leading to no oil pressure and internal disaster.

Is that a deep or shallow pan 5L40E?

I think the bigger engines had the option for deeper pan but not sure if the 318i had.
