Self-sacrifice for the sake of another and compassion are a couple of the most admirable HUMAN characteristics. It just seems we can't have a futuristic sci fi movie, series or apparently even a short without some version of AI that is a better human than most humans are! It’s a hackneyed theme. I don’t have a problem with programmed devices that can calculate, store and retrieve information faster than we can or a robot that is stronger than a human. Ascribing personhood or life to these devices, however, is ludicrous.
@davepage27583 ай бұрын

Here's my problem: "Roy is a sci-fi drama short film about a robot mechanic holed away in a rundown barn, living in a world of rustic antiques melded with futuristic sensibilities. He is a man forgotten by society and spends his days tinkering at projects. That is until someone opens the door into his shop. Roy is a story about compassion in the face of those affected by violence and despair. It explores the themes of how we relate to strangers and friends around us who have become bitter and jaded by the world. Roy poses this question: how do we face those transformed by violence and angry at the world?" 1. Roy is living in a world of rustic antiques melded with futuristic sensibilities? 2. Forgotten by society? 3. compassion in the face of those affected by violence and despair? 4. how we relate to strangers and friends around us who have become bitter and jaded by the world? 5. how do we face those transformed by violence and angry at the world? When I finished reading the description above I said "Bullshit". Not that the short is bad. Well shot and acted. Music fine. But how are we supposed to get anything in that description, from the film? More like: Desperate to live, a stranger seeks help from the only one capable of saving her life... D'Ohhh!!!
@flyyynt3 жыл бұрын
Agree. It's actually kind of sad to see most commenting falling over themselves in praise of this short. As you say, it's well shot, directed and acted - they obviously knew what they were doing - but the "story" is an uninspired trope that's been done to death. There's nothing unique here (and arguably the plot is contrived). I'm just amazed people act like they've never seen this premise before. I'm not saying the theme of self-sacrifice isn't important or deserving, but it's easy to get an emotional reaction with it. Good stories are difficult to create. They take insight, talent, writing skill. It's a shame so many filmmakers seem to think story isn't important, because story is the most important thing about making a film. Short length isn't an excuse. Hemmingway wrote one of the most memorable emotional stories in only six words.
@farmergiles10653 жыл бұрын
Ok, "Desperate to live, a stranger seeks help from the only one capable of saving her life." AND Compassionate and self-giving, he responds to save, even at the cost of his life. It's about having heart, about not facing others with criticism and judgment. It's about today, and the fact that the latter is the common habit. It's about self examination, and our impulses.
@farmergiles10653 жыл бұрын
@@flyyynt "an uninspired trope that's been done to death" Uninspired? Done to death? Some new things don't merit saying in the first place. Some old things merit reminders. And some very old things merit continuous repetition so we won't forget. I'm amazed people react negatively when they've seen this premise often. How often do you get something new that's worth so much?
@flyyynt3 жыл бұрын
