I'd rather listen to 3 notes of Roy Hargrove's than 3,567,902 notes of Wynton Marsalis'. Roy has a spirit, a soul, and a VOICE that is all his.

You DO KNOW that Wynton discovered the jewel that was and will always be, Roy Hargrove ...for THAT ALONE he’s cool with me! Just sayin’...
@Jaycee375 жыл бұрын
Wynton discovered Roy. To be fair to Wynton he has represented the music and us very well. Jazz musicians and the music was not respected or treated well in the late 70's and 80's even when there was a resurgence. Wynton helped to change that. You don't hear many stereotypes of drug addict jazz Men anymore do you?

Yesss brothers Wynton heard a bird that could fly as far into the spiritual heavens of African American Classical music as he desired to.Roy Hargrove "topflight" RIP

Why do some listeners feel they have to diss Wynton Marsalis to uplift Roy Hargrove? I've heard it many times. They have different playing styles, but they are both great and represent the music 100 percent. Wynton's greatness is that he heard Roy and recognized his talent. So why some listeners want to diss Wynton is beyond me.

I don't think so! He has a few songs that u won't find on any of his recordings, but he performs them live. By his account, he became kinda disenchanted with recording. It makes no money & he'd rather give u the live experiemce. I'm sorry I never got to see him live.

I'm learning to love jazz, but with few exceptions, I just can't get into sax. Especally solos..most of them have a nails-on-chalkboard effect on me. Loved this tune but once the sax came in I had to mute it, lol. I guess I "don't get it".
@joshtrimble55174 жыл бұрын
I get you man, on this recording in particular! I was a little jarred by the sax solo, especially after such a spacious and illustrious head.. but before I concluded my judgment, I have to remember that it's ultimately up to me whether or not I believe in what he's saying over the topic (metaphorically and literally speaking). It's all subjective, but he's entitled to make his statement in whatever fashion he felt in that moment.
