I like Stuart Fillingham's videos too. As a French man, his accent, his opinionated views on certain products, his "rule Britannia" stance, amuse me very much. I also like very much the way he introduced me to certain British brands totally unknown here in France: Gold top gloves, Stadium mirrors, Hagon shock absorbers, etc.

I recently took one out for a quick test ride. Really enjoyed it. Still a bit slow but felt very planted and easy to ride. I totally agree with you about the side stand. It was actually hard to push it up off it as it was leaning so far over. But for what it costs I don't think you can go wrong. Really good bike

Royal Enfields chief designer accepted the side stand design flaw in one of his interviews. His explanation - "The ground clearance of the bike was changed numerous times during development and by the time the side stand went into production, the final increase in GC was the reason for too much lean." He went on to further state that this will be rectified in the next facelift.
@RocketMan_Moto

Good to hear, but how they could sign off on the current design is beyond me. And why wait for a facelift? Surely manufacturing a longer side stand can’t be that difficult?🤷‍♂️ Thanks anyway for your input👍😊

@@RocketMan_Moto It was also my initial thought but it might be a bit complicated since there is only 2cm distance between the side stand and the center stand when both are up. 2cm is in my opinion not enough and if they should increase the length there is no place for an extender plate. A very costly engineering mistake but what's worse is that it seems not everyone in the company admits there is a problem and depending who you ask you will get different answers. Numerous reviews says the bike is top heavy which in my opinion is not true at all...

I agree regarding relaxed driving, in fact I bought it for this very reason, and it Is equally true that It vibrates a lot at motorway speeds, which objectively makes it less comfortable on long motorway journeys. However It must also be said that its ability to consume very little, can be a relevant fact when you're going on holiday, as well as being surprisingly fun around the curves. I agree regarding the side stand, but once you get used to It (and your leg), it's not a big problem to manage. The headlight certainly needs to be improved, at night It makes a "presence" and nothing else, when you face a hairpin bend at night is like trusting fate and hoping that there are no obstacles... or ravines... A perfect horizontal line... which as soon as you enter the curve Is eclipsed, leaving you to good luck

I think it's a fair assessment of the new Himalayan. I've been told that the factory are now fitting a longer sidestand so the lean is not so great. I have ridden both the Triumph 400x and the new Himalayan but not the 450MT as there are no dealers local to me that either sell CFMOTO or have a demo bike. I have the old 411 which I bought for a purpose and it was a very good price, the new one is technically better in every respect but is a lot more money thus putting it in competition with other makes. My 411 is almost my "don't care" bike, and i've taken it places I wouldn't take a big expensive bike for fear of dropping it and the associated repair costs. The Triumph is the best looking in my eyes, and if I was sticking to urban roads, then this would be the bike I'd probably buy. This might change if I could get a ride on the 450MT and there was a good dealer backup. The RE and Triumph are easy to get.

The tool for the job, depends on the job. It makes a lot of sense for some people to explore the Himalayas on a Himalayan; fewer Km per day but 10+ days per adventure. RE's extensive dealer (and service) network in some parts of the world, also means that it is easier to get spares and support in whatever remote Himalayan village you may need it in. This is a calmer, slightly more highway-stable alternative to the CRF 300 Rally, for your overlanding needs.

Great review as always RM. I’m pretty sure that’s the Himalayan I test rode a couple of weeks ago. (Olhão yes?). If so I think they might have bent the truth slightly when they said you were the first person to ride it because it had 2 kilometres on the clock when I took it out. 😂 I had been over there a couple of times because I was waiting for them to register another demo bike after they sold the last one. I had watched both your earlier reviews on the Triumph 400x and the CFmoto 450MT and after hearing your thoughts I had already ridden both of those and I personally think your reviews of all three of these bikes is spot on. I really enjoyed riding the 400x, it’s also a really good looking bike and I was very very tempted. The Himalayan is quite good…. but that side stand lean is terrible and your review of it pretty much sums up the thoughts and feelings I came away with after riding it..… that’s why I am taking delivery of my CFMoto 450MT in September. I just wanted to thank you for these reviews, you have been instrumental in helping me put aside my preconceived notions around CFMoto.
@RocketMan_Moto

Thanks for that, Rick. I think you made the right choice. The CF Moto is probably the best of the 3, certainly the most versatile. The Triumph didn’t quite live up to its fantastic looks (the Speed is better, imo) and this Himalayan felt as though it had been built in Soviet Russia. Thanks for your input and enjoy your MT👍😊

Great summation of the Himalayan. As you were comparing it to the other machines, I couldn’t help but think that the Kawasaki Versys X300 is often overlooked. It’s around 20kg lighter than most other bikes, has a great twin cylinder engine, large fuel tank, low seat heater, is comfortable (despite all the blabbering about the seat) and it’s capable of travelling vast road miles and the type of off road that you would likely do on one of these bikes. Perhaps Mrs RM could check it out for suitability. Good honest review, RM

Hi RM, I really appreciate your integrity and impartiality in the popular bike reviews you make. All of your contemporaries based in the UK have sold out to bike makers or aftersales parts companies for monetary reasons. You know the people I am taking about. Too many free lunches, holidays and handouts. I almost always agree with your conclusions. My feeling is RE are about 90 percent there with the current range of bikes , but still need to go the extra mile especially now the Triumph and Chinese bike makers like CF Moto and Kove have woken up to the threat of Indian motorcycle makers taking on the world market. This can only be a good thing for UK and European bikers as this will lead to better bikes and lower prices, as we have been overcharged for too many years now.

From what I heard in one of the staff in the launch event for the Himalayan, the side stand lean issue is due to the fact that they changed the suspension geometry after it was designed, so it ended up being too short and it wasn't corrected in time, so yes it is a known issue by RE.

So I've been told. I wouldn't have thought a side stand was that difficult to redesign, though. I don't understand how they could have signed it of as it is, it kind of ruins the experience, especially for smaller/female riders

Nicely presented. Firm seat, eh? That would be an automatic disqualifucation for me; my butt is quite sensitive to this stuff. The most comfy seat I've ever experienced was the optional comfy seat on my F750GS. That bike also had a short side stand and thus lesned a lot and took some muscle to straighten up, but I found it handy when parking on road shoulders that where sloping down; with a longer kick stand I wouldn't be able to park there. Cheers.

Because I’m only 5’8” with a 29” inseam, I would mount it cowboy style. The seat was fine for my commute. This was, IMO, a very well-rounded and objective review. Sadly, any Royal Enfield would never be an option for me, as the dealership I would have to get it from is the same I got my Benelli from - which was an abysmal experience (the Benelli's speedo and fuel indicator did not work when I picked up my bike, the shop owner did not take me seriously, and other such nice things. He also did not seem to like the at that time new Benelli models much, but the older models with larger displacements. Sigh...not my fault that I was not interested in those due to my back issues). Anyways, if this bike is meant mainly for Mrs. RocketMan, all you can do IMO is make suggestions to her. In the end, she has to decide. Maybe you can give advice how to narrow the options (which could also make a video). In the end, after passing her license, she has to test ride and take a decision. Even if after 3 months she might decide it was not the right bike for her.

I ride a Honda Click scooter that has Pirellis and YSS suspension, dual disc brakes and ABS every day . There are excellent low cost high quality very fun bikes out there these days to be had. Its a bit of a revolution to me who has been riding since the 70's. Love the options and hope the Japanese get into competition mode against CF Moto. Really cant complain these days. I've got a 411 and have throughly enjoyed it. I looked at the 451 yesterday which just arrived in the US...too heavy off of the kickstand for a short old man. The CF Moto is not available. Haven't even thought about the Triumph, but might look into after this and Nathanthepostman's reviews. Still looking for a 411 replacement. As many 411 owners have said, I'd like the 411 with a little better highway capability. I too live about 4-5 hours of high speed motorway from the good riding.

Having ridden the Himi and the 450MT it is a slam dunk for the MT. It feels in a different class in almost all areas. I really liked the idea of the Himi, rugged, simple, capable etc but the truth is the MT has made the Himi obsolete….almost. The dealer network and service intervals certainly add back and rebalance the books a bit. The side stand is easy to sort…the BMW 1150GS had the same problem and this was cured by attaching an ice hockey puck to the bottom of the stand. Has the added advantage of a larger foot so less likely to sink in grass. Still going for the MT though.

I've test ridden this new Himalayan and agree with almost everything said in this video. The side stand was OK for me and anyway, a side stand extender/enlarger/foot would add 2-3mm to its height and thus reduce the lean angle when parked. I did not really like this bike because of its engine. I have found it just adequate, not fun, not perky at all. For example, the KTM 390 Adventure has an engine which makes it much more enjoyable to ride.

Spot on with the bands. Noone does it better than Enfield at the moment with BMW, Suzuki and KTM being equally miserable. Clear, simple to understand and remember. This bike? Well, it’s not for me. I loved the looks of the old Scram in the red/white paint. 19” front does it perfectly for me and my needs as I off road as much as I visit the gym (not at all unless I get paid). The 17” front on the Guerilla was a bit of a disappointment must be said. As it stands I can’t see why I’d take this over a slightly used Vstrom 650 for the same money. Where I live the Suzuki comes with a seven year warranty, I get more power and Suzuki reliability. I have 3 single cylinder bikes and 1 multi cylinder one. A single is a great commuter and trail and back roads adventurer where speeds don’t go much beyond 80km/hr. But a lightweight or middleweight twin will always be a better “1 bike” ride if you you are limited to a single steed. The vibrations just get too annoying at high speeds over a prolonged period. Or at least this is my conclusion as I am well into middle age. Not to say you can’t ride big miles all day long on a single; you would just enjoy them so much more on a twin.
