The Royal Irish Regiment is an Irish Infantry Regiment within the British Army. They're highly trained and experienced soldiers capable of humanitarian, peacekeeping and front-line fighting. They have two Battalions, 1st Battalion (Regular) and 2nd Battalion (Reserve).
The 1st (Regular) Battalion is based in England at Clive Barracks, Shropshire, while the 2nd (Reserve) Battalion headquarters is in Lisburn, Co Antrim.
During their time in Afghanistan and Iraq, they have proved themselves as a fearsome fighting Regiment. One of their many battles includes The Battle of Musa Qala, where a small force of Royal Irish, 3 Para and Afghan National Police had to fight off hundreds of Taliban fighters for over a month straight with little support from allied forces. In total, they eliminated over 200 Taliban fighters.

Jonny Hillis the Royal Irish never served in Northern Ireland, it was the Ulster defense regiment who served in Northern Ireland during the troubles & was the largest infantry regiment Since the Neapolitan wars. The Royal Irish rangers had there training bases in BALLYMENA etc, and were amalgamated with the UDR in the 1990s to form the Royal Irish Regiment by which time the troubles were over.

As an outsider - but one who is well aware of the Irish/Northern Irish history - looking in, it's interesting to note the absolute hatred and animosity shown in some of the comments, notably those from the obviously Republican side of the fence.Like most political and sectarian arguments there are at least two sides with opposing views. When you start to dig into what those views are, there is little difference from goes on between rival gangs, with each side blaming the other for what took place at a time that no-ne in a dozen or more generations was there to witness anything. Looking at the more recent history, it's quite astonishing what we find. From the Irish perspective their hatred for the "English" (and I use that nomenclature advisedly) began when Oliver Cromwell invaded Ireland in 1649 and his troops killed some 2,000-plus Irishmen (let's not be specific), then brought in the British Planters - land-grabbers if you like. As landlords, they gained a reputation for unfairness and cruelty to the locals. Nearly 400 years is a long time to harbour a grievance in any man's language. Nevertheless, Britain included Ireland in its Empire-building, and gradually brought some level of work and prosperity, but it was mainly only in Ireland that resentment continued. What was it all about? The throne of England! King Henry did not get permission from the Pope to divorce his wife, and as a result, he moved away from the Catholic Church and became the Head of the Protestant Monarchy - or The Reformation, as it became known. From the British and Planter's perspective, they saw the indigenous folk as uneducated, uncivilised peasants, and felt they had the right to the land granted them by the Government. These plantations brought work and prosperity (and some small fortunes as well). They also saw William of Orange as their saviour in keeping the British Monarchy Protestant. In time, the entire island of Ireland prospered, but the enmity between Catholic and Protestant never ceased, nor did the hatred of the British. Jumping forward 300 years: The North of Ireland was split from the south by agreement between Britain and Ireland, with the North preferring to remain British and mainly Protestant, and the South remaining Republican (certainly in name) and mainly Catholic.So by this time, the country was divided by both political and religious factions. It was (and is) a little like the supporters of two rival football teams, each hating the other enough to get into a serious fracas. If that sounds ridiculous, it's because it is! So what have we seen in the last 100 years? Staunch Irish Republicans carrying out terrorist attacks against the police - both the Irish and Northern Irish police; although when that didn't work out for them, they used Civil Rights marches as an excuse to pour their hatred on anything and everything British. They did that through bombing campains in pubs, restaurants, garages, offices - anywhere that would guarantee death and destruction of men, women and children. Of course, their mendacity didn't stop there, for the police were then branded as British thugs and murderers in a malicious, long-running campaign, and when the army was called in, they too became another target, being similarly branded; yet it was neither the police nor the army that were murdering innocent civilians, knee-capping, executing people, burning shops and buses, tarring-and-feathering or knee-capping - that was all done by masked thugs fighting for something to do with what happened 400 years before. Of course, the Protestant uprisings that took place to counter the terrorism, also took to the bomb and the bullet with 400 years of history to support them. Today, it does seem that terrorism won the day - the Border removed, free passage throughout, former terrorists and killers (on both sides) in political union (or dis-union) as MP's, the Irish Language being almost compulsory in schools, and Irish Government having a say in what happens in the north. Has it brought reconciliation? I don't think it has, or ever will - not when you have such hatred such as we see in the afore-mentioned comments. From the British PoV, I don't think they care overmuch what happens in the island, or who eventually takes control. A United or non-United Ireland will still voice their 400 years of history, and the hatred will long continue.

@charlieindigo
@charlieindigo 4 жыл бұрын
@@tommillar2821 You may be right, Tom, but my feeling is that the Brits overall - and especially successive British Governments - woould prefer to relinquish NI as it's been a thorn in their side for so long. If that were to be the case - and I rather suspect that a United Ireland will not be long in coming - Britain would probably be happier to associate itself with Ireland as with any other country, and no restraints or secretarianism to worry about. In the meantime, the dyed-in-the-wool gangsters and terrorists will continue their 400-year "hate" regardless. Irish and Ulster soldiers (North and South) have always been regarded by the British Army as "Beyond the Pale," but nevertheless recognised them and respected them as among the best troops in their command. Wherever they served in the Empire and Commonwealth, they earned and gained respect, and rightly so - from Waterloo to Afghanistan, and never once lost face. However, nothing our troops do impresses the government of the day; it's only the people who love or hate them, depending on which side of the divide they belong. It's only in the last few years that the Irish Government got over their ostracism of Irishmen fighting for The Crown, and in my book that's 100 years of shame on their part. It's time both nations recognised that there are no winners in this continual war of hate. The Royal Irish are a step forward in bringing the two together, and long may it continue.

@@tridentuk6885 Thank you for your response - much appreciated. I have alwayd had a ense of pride in our Irish regiments, whether it was the "Skins" or the Connaughts - indeed all of them. My stepfather was in 2nd Inniskillings, and later in the CRMP, serving his country with pride - and he was from Donegal, just outside the Border. 22 years unblemished service followed by a BEM and nine Campaign medals. He then put in another 22 years as a prison officer. For myself, I served 10 years in the RUC, without "fear or favour," serving my comminity to the bsst of my ability. I had good friends that were Catholic and Protestant, and I treated them them all without prejudice, but some turned out to be not as good as I believed, purely becasue I was a copper! I left the country following serious injuries, and eventually served another 15 years in a Mainland Police force. However, I weep for my old country, and am still in touch with a small group of lifetime friends there. I've taken several groups of Mainland police on motorcycle trips to show them the country, and they all learnt things they'd never known previously. Quite a few have since gone back to tour around for themselves, such was their liking for the friendliness they found. The RIR "evil killers?" No, not in my book! At the barest minimum, they don't wear masks to hide their identity when called to fight, and that's as we should expect from an honest soldier. I do regret the passing of all of our old regiments, but the RIR gives me some hope in its cross-community ethos.

Buddy, it sounds like you did you and your father proud. As I hope I did. No one likes a bigot.We just got shouted at a lot by the people we swore to protect. :( You have a great day, Sir :) I personally wish to wear my Ops medals in public, from NI, Iraq, Afghanistan or certain African countries. But I can't. Which is a damn shame. Such is the way to just stay under the radar. Happy to get invited into the Legion under my dad's name after parades, and just shut up. The fellas know the drill. And agreed, we wore balaclavas after it was cool :D We lived there, you know the drill. Going home, I had my windows smashed in, and I'm sure you suffered the same shit down the line. "I do regret the passing of all of our old regiments, but the RIR gives me some hope in its cross-community ethos." Keep 'er lit, the lads and lasses are doing a brilliant job. Only one left. Make it count. The ref to "evil killers are what some people think. I am in no way accusing them of evil killing. From your experience, 50 shades of truth. All I can say is I would kick the shit out of any soldier who ever went near breaking the law. As much as people hate us, we have rules. Always trust an Irish Ranger. I mean, I took the piss and asked why my B Coy lad didn't slap me on the bum after watching this. As everyone's slapping all the bums.
