Such perfect unison! These musicians are amazing- sounds like ONE pipe and ONE drum. Strength of any group is working together no matter what. And these guys show us how!

Why is it that this music inspires such emotions? I have been reading the book "Soldiers" about the Royal Hospital Chelsea in pensioners, which tells of the lives of British soldiers which served during the times of the Empire. It's great to see this. I hope and pray I can visit the Imperial War Museum someday before I die. Nothing like the feats of arms of the British and their history.

The bass drummer wears the distinct white bearskin with a red plume. The white bearskin was given to the Regiment by Tsar Nicholas the Second of Russia in 1894, on his becoming Colonel in Chief of The Royal Scots Greys.

The drum major or pipe major shouts by the right....he indicates to the pipe band it's the right side line who is leading the band. Usually the pipe major is in the line who is leading the band. If it's a massed pipe band march where the frontage maybe 5+ players, the pipe major may shout by the center which indicates the center line is the guilding line. It's important for bands to have a guilding line as it helps the band to stay in formation.

The white bearskins were a gift from Tsar Nicholas the Second in 1894 after he became Colonel in Chief. Not sure how that was done, but I suppose the Dragoons thought the bearskins looked rather good on their drummers.

They are bearskins. In fact, the bass drummer wears a very distinctive white bearskin with red hackle, instead of black with white, as a legacy inherited from the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) [Before being renamed and then amalgamated and renamed again]. This was given to them by Tsar Nicholas II when he became their Colonel-in-Chief.

Gentlemen, as for the Bear skins. As a member of the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment Company of Grenadiers 1776 winter camp- the bearskin predates the war with france by a good margin. They were in use just as the French indian wars were ending.

Angus had a wee too much too drink so he thought he would sleep off behind some bushes. And along came to school girls. And they wanted to know if it was really true that a Scottmans doesn't were anything under his kilt. So they looked. One of the girls was wearing a blue ribbon in her hair so she tied it around the answer. And when the Scottman woke up. He looked down and saw the blue ribbon in surprise. And he declared, I don't know where been but I see you won first prize! = )

Stephen, "the best in the world"? Give a listen to Shotts and Dykehead, Simon Fraser University or Field Marshall Montgomery pipe bands. The RSDG's are damned fine pipers, no question, but not the best in the world. The aforementioned bands have consistently won world championships time and again. Check them out. I think you'll be even more impressed.

And the name as well, before 1815 there was no Grenadier Guards but only the '1st Regiment of Foot Guards'. It gain its title and headdress as a reward for defeating the grenadier regiment of the French Old (actually the middle) Guards in the Battle of Waterloo.
