only reason I'm purchasing a new wheel instead of the cover is because I want the r8 engine start buttons and easy drive select

I was being honest, as I always aim to be. There is a difference, but it's expected. As well, I didn't mind the cover at all. Would I still recommend the cover? Yes. As it does provide a certain group of people what they're looking for. And if applied when the wheel is off, even better. But, with that being said, the finish of the re-trim is factory, and you can't beat that.
