Good to see my old shipmate MS Doyle. I ran a couple regular force BMQs in 2021 as a Platoon Commander. We had a lot of issues with inadequate equipment, lack of uniforms, lack of boots, piss poor leadership. But my instructors were some of the most dedicated people in the CAF that I've ever worked with, and we held it together and graduated over 100 new members, some really good people. I didn't expect it but running BMQ was actually some of the most rewarding work I've done in my 15 year career. We still had some dress and grooming standards then. I honestly don't know what I would do now.

Reservists should receive the same rigorous basic training as the Regular Force, either at CFLRS or any base that conducts D-BMQ, to ensure a uniform standard of discipline, skills, and preparedness. During my trade training, I encountered reservists in the course who had noticeable difficulty with drill-one of the core elements of military discipline. Drill goes beyond simple marching; it instills focus, precision, and respect for structure, which are essential qualities in any military environment. When we discussed our basic training experiences, the differences became clear. For many of the reservists, basic training seemed less intense, even described by some as “a walk in the park.” This perception likely reflects a difference in training standards or levels of intensity between the two groups. As a result, reservists may not always develop the same level of discipline or readiness as their Regular Force counterparts. This gap in training standards can affect unit cohesion, performance, and mutual respect, making it all the more important for both reservists and Regular Force members to receive the same foundational training.
@charlesdark28612 ай бұрын
How hard your BMQ is for reservists depends a lot on what armory or base you trained on, as well as your staff. It is a genuine issue, my basic was taught mostly by infanteers so we didn't get more than maybe 20 minutes of free time in a night right before lights out and got beasted often unless we had a test the following day, at which point we'd usually be granted 3-4 hours to study, clean our rifles and shacks and prep for inspection the next morning, but if you get non-infanteer staff you'll usually have a mildly more relaxed experience. Reservists also get the option of a weekend BMQ which is done with the idea of troops being able to work their full-time jobs during the week and then do BMQ on the weekend, and unfortunately it results in a lot of skill fade between weekends and generally results in easier courses. It's unfortunate and oftentimes results in lower cohesion and large amounts of skill fade.
@itsjames6916 күн бұрын
While I agree, BMQ and drill are such a small slice of your job in the greater picture. I could see why they don't want to waste resources on the full scale St Jean experience. My two cents would be leave the mediocre drill alone but give reservists better reg force support on trade courses, as this is what really matters.

Canada can't afford to pay for PT clothing... that's brutal
@charlesdark28612 ай бұрын
PT clothes are issued out at the unit level because PT strip is usually unique to the unit (with a handful of exceptions). These are reservists so they already have units they belong to before they even ship off to BMQ, some units give their troops unit PT strip before they go on course, but a lot of units require you to pass your DP1 before you earn the privilege of wearing the regiment's PT strip. Myself and most of the other gunners I know had to wear civie PT strip during our basic and DP1 not because our units couldn't afford PT strip, but because we weren't gunners yet, so we weren't allowed to wear anything with "RCA" or the arty badge. It'd be like if we wore the arty cap badge before we ever pulled the laniard, it's like as a cardinal sin for us.

@YourAverageCanadian29 that's a question best answered with some introspection my guy. The military can afford you many opportunities in many different environments, but it ultimately depends on what you are most comfortable, or interested, in. Do you enjoy being outdoors, and the idea of camping in the rain or snow doesn't bother you? Maybe one of the combat arms trades is for you. Do you like working with tech and radios? Signaler. Do you like staying dry and counting thousands of bullets? Ammo Tech. Like vehicles and engines? Vehicle tech! Do you like the Ocean? Navy. Although, I can't speak much for them as my time was spent in the Infantry. I have heard great things about serving in the Air Force from friends but again have no experience to offer. I can say, however, that all the jokes about "chair force" become more of an envy based joke after 3 weeks in the field 😅 Best of luck in your endeavors. @@daisyveronique3439 Women were still pretty constrained when it came to hairstyles prior to the new HAIRFORGEN, it was just a handful of variations of buns and braids, I don't recall if they were even allowed ponytails or anything of the sort. Their piercings were also pretty limited, both for professionalism and for safety (large earrings have a much higher chance of getting caught on something). The reason for the short hair is both for professionalism and for cleanliness, hence why buzzcuts were a staple of the military for so long (and still are in a lot of foreign militaries). Even when you're not in theater, even short exercises are usually one week, longer ones easily reach into the 2 or 3 week mark, and you're seldom ever given a chance to shower in that timeframe. Short haircuts help prevent the spread of lice, fleas and, to a lesser extent, ticks. Women being allowed to have long hair was compromise made to make the military more accessible to them, it wasn't originally meant to create any sense of individuality, I was simply saying how one of the first things that was drilled into us on my basic was that we weren't individuals, and yet HAIRFORGEN conflicts with that idea.

This for the Navy. We 1000% need more. Full time or part time. We need our ships at full capacity. We have way too much coast that isn't being patrolled at the moment.

Canada doesn’t have a Marine Corp. You mistook the French translation for Navy as Marines. Don’t worry I also fell victim to that and a personnel corrected me. So now you should also correct anyone who makes the same mistake
