Gear oil is great for the job, it's widely used in countries were every man, woman, child & dog ride bikes daily. I use GT85 before every long ride or other ride if short & because it's a lube with PTFE/Silicone that adheres to the chain really well, yet doesn't really attract road grime. I also use it periodically to clean the chain & it's always as new looking. I've used it extensively in this way on all my bikes. It's also cheap & widely available, certainly in the UK. This said, I might give gear oil a try, just to see which I prefer 👍

Totally agree, gear oil all the way for me from now on, now when it comes to cleaning the chain I use paraffin, mainly as I've always got some lying around in the garage, but I do use GT85 on all my bikes and have done for years, I simply spray all the metal parts and wipe it over with a cloth, no corrosion excellent 👍...... Colin 😊

Hi Colin. I agree entirely with gear oil. I have a can of very expensive chain wax and don't think its as good as gear oil. I will go back to gear oil when the can is used up. About 10 years ago I did around 10,000 miles on a Chinese 250cc Cruiser. It was a grey import and intended for brazil. In the book it recommended gear oiling the side plates of the chain. It did have an 'O' ring chain and it was still in great shape after 4 years. Like you I am old school and learnt to use Paraffin or Diesel to clean chains back when I left school. There's a lot of Ballcocks spoken about oil. I have just put Castrol EP-90 in my BMW gearbox and looking at the specs its still ideal. I have had that can of oil for nearly 40 years. What is t with Lidl. They used to sell brilliant oils and sprays but her in the UK they are rare. I have just used up a tin of Lidl sawdust based hand cleaner. Its better than swarfega and affordable, or was when they sold it! Take Care mate

Hi Paul, your absolutely right in everything you say, and for me there's nothing wrong with being old school, a lot of the old stuff has been tried and proven good over the years, like you I have 2 expensive tins of chain wax that I've never used and won't, that Lidl hand cleaner you mentioned is brilliant stuff, it shifts any thing off your hands, hasn't been here for ages, but it's back, and i got 3 tins 😂, thanks for watching, take care ........ Colin ☺️

Sorry, Incidentally I forgot to mention there is no International agreement on chain lubes or categories of use! I recently did some very sandy green lanes on my Himalayan and the wax positively encouraged sand to stick to the chain and sprockets.

Spot on Colin, one thing today for sure is they have perfected marketing to extract/obtain more money out of us with fancy promotions/adverts etc when at the end of the day many more traditional products will do the job just as good if not better for a fraction of the price. Each to their own, although a fool and their money are easily parted springs to mind.

hi Rhys, I totally agree, so many go for the brand names and most of the time that's what you pay for a name, as you say a fool and their money are easily parted, take care ......colin 😀

Hello Walter, thanks for watching, you can't go wrong with the shaft drive bikes, as I said in the video, I had them for years, no chain maintenance and adjusting, lets face it, the used oil is still good enough to maintain the chain, take care...... Colin 😊

Gear oil is my choice. I clean with kerosene, which I think you’d call paraffin. Both do a fantastic job for much less than the aerosol products.
@droneon29
@droneon29 Ай бұрын
Hi, and thanks for watching, yes paraffin, brilliant for cleaning chains, and gear oil to lube them, and the job is a great result, and as you say for much less than aerosol will ever be, ........ Colin 😊

OK, so I was thinking whilst enjoying another gorgeous sunny October day here in the Gers, doors and windows open, dog stretched out on the terrace, I've got this 10L tub of chainsaw oil for my Stihl doing nothing right now... why can't I use that to lube my himmy's chain?
@droneon29
@droneon29 Ай бұрын
morning, and why not, as I said I'm going back to the old ways, it always served me good then so why not now, I've got a 5lt tub of chainsaw oil and I'd quite happily use it on any of the bike chains, oh and it's still throwing it down here ........colin 😀

Yep mate I use Scott oil 🤣 your alright 🤣🤣🤣🤣 yours looks just like a chain should look,imo, I do get a bit of flick as I always run a drop of Scott oil on the inside of the chain after a ride and let the heat do the work, but oil doesn’t do any harm on the back of yer number plate and a few spats on your wheel, 🤣 but then again I’m a little anal about it, 🤣 the one thing I hate about chains is adjustment getting it running smooth and quiet always entails a lot fiddling for me, so whatever I can do to maintain my chain so I don’t have to constantly adjust it is time well spent,😂😂😂😂 her oil is what I used to use be for finding Scott oil I use it straight from the the refill bottles the nozzle is perfect for apply it to the chain or one of Sarah’s hair dye bottles work great and are small enough to put in your tank bag. ….. Pete 🇫🇷
@droneon29
@droneon29 Ай бұрын
Morning Pete, I thought you still used it, believe it or not, one job I hate doing on any bike is chain adjustment, so I'm with you, the better the maintenance, the less adjustments are needed, and good old oil in any form has got to be the way forward, I like the thinking behind the hair dye bottles 😜, I should have a never ending supply with the wife 🤣 🤣, ......... Colin ☺️

Regards insurance on your three bikes, do you have each insured separately or on a kind of multi bike policy? Are the prices reasonable there in France?
@droneon29
@droneon29 Ай бұрын
Hi, a touchy subject, insurance rip off, it should be called, I remember back in the good old 70s & 80s in the UK, my insurance was with a company called Norwich union rider policy, where the rider was insured and not the bike, you simply picked your maximum cc and all was good, but the came the power and speed race between the Japanese manufacturers, where a 125, could go faster than a 400, and so it all fell apart, I have to insure each bike separately, even though I can only ride one at a time, the insurance here covers full international breakdown and insurance in any country, do my Guerrilla costs me 380€ for the top cover ......Colin 😊
@keepitreal1547
@keepitreal1547 Ай бұрын
@@droneon29 Yes a rip off, I wondered if any different for you there. €380 is pretty good though for the brand new bike. Get this, my older 150bhp Fireblade is £312 fully comp & zero excess. My 24bhp Himalayan 411 is £920 fully comp & £600 excess or £360 third party. Same insurer, you couldn't make it up. The insurer says it's because I've owner the Fireblade for 17yrs, it makes a difference they say.
@droneon29
@droneon29 Ай бұрын
@keepitreal1547 , a rip off for sure, my 411 himi is the same price as the Guerrilla, but as i say, i get full recovery breakdown and the insurance covers all my gear, helmet, clothes, boots, medical expenses, cameras and satnav, so i cant really complain ...... Colin ☺️
@keepitreal1547
@keepitreal1547 Ай бұрын
