I bought a 5dIII last year with only 15,000 shutter clicks for about $500 usd. Paired with my 24-105 f4, this combo is quite a workhorse, and the total cost was under $1,000 USD. I HIGHLY recommend this set up for anybody at any level. I am a "focus-recompose" person, so I don't care about all the auto focus advances on the newer systems. I'm doing a week long shoot at a camp soon, and this will be my main camera and lens for the week. Thanks for posting!

I love my Canon 5D MK III. Yes it's old, it's noisy, it's a freaking dinasaur that but you know what, something about the color in this 5D mk III make it special. I used this camera for portraits and I can tell you, this camera still a beast even in 2021.

I just had a friend give me a Canon EOS 5D MIII. He went to the mirrorless cameras and said I had helped him so much with various projects, that he wanted me to have it. Now, I'm sitting here with a manual and YT videos trying to figure out how to use it. I've been using the Sony NEX5N, and 4X4 view, so a bit of a learning curve for me. After watching your video, at least I know I'm not wasting my time trying to learn this new camera. Enjoyed the video very much!

After nearly 40 years as a photographer I can honestly say in 2012 barley one month after the 5d Mkiii was available I knew I had just got a classic workhorse. I have worked with loads of different set-ups, from 4/3rds to 8"x10" cameras, the 5Dmkiii is simply the best camera I have owned. I switched over to Canon from Olympus digital with the 5Dmkii but I wasn't fully happy until the Mkiii [the Mkii and its shutter sound was never confidence building :) ]. Now I only shoot fine art landscape and I have moved "up" to the 5dsr for the file size and detail, I will never part with my "baby". Everyone can jump on the mirrorless band wagon, I will just keep plugging along with my 5D's. Thanks for a taking the time expressing a point of view on the merits of the classic DSLR's. It is refreshing to see a video that isn't all hype of new tech.

I bought a second-hand one 6 months ago with only about 30,000 shots at an unbeatable price. Impeccable. I invested some more money in three new lenses, a wide-angle Zoom, and two fixed focal lengths. I got fed up with my 40D after so much use and it starts to feel tired. It has been in my possession for 14 years. The 5D mkiii is outstanding. Photography is a great passion of mine, and I am very enthusiastic. I am so satisfied.

I bought a Nikon D3500 when we went into lockdown last year; I got the photography bug and bought a second-hand 5D Mk III a couple of months ago. It is an awesome camera. I just love using it. I paid a bit more than I wanted, simply because it had only 5000 shutter actuations. I have never spent so much time outside in nature. I'm a 59 year old novice but I'm enjoying every moment I spend photographing with my 5D. I can see why they are considered such a great camera.

Based partly on your review, yesterday, I bought my first full frame camera which is a Canon 5D Mark iii with a shutter count of only 8153. It came with a Canon 16-35 f/2.8 ii lens. The original owner bought both the camera and lens direct from Canon in 2015. It's such a thrill to shoot with this full frame camera and L type lens. Up to this point I've owned 4 different cropped Canon cameras. I'm still going to keep my Canon 7D Mark ii which I love. Thank you for your in depth review. It really helped me make up my mind.

I purchased the Canon 5D Mark iii, back in 2014 shortly after it came out. It has helped me create stunning photography. As 2022 came around I was trying figure out if I needed to upgrade, but after watching your video and several others, I have ultimately decided to continue using my dinosaur. Knowing that still in 2022, professionals like myself are still choosing to use their dino over newer cameras, helped me make my decision. I have not shot with the XT4 but would certainly consider it capable of professional results. I have shot with the Xpro3 and XT2 extensively and both are very capable cameras. Like you say the portability and discreet nature of this system is highly valuable. Also the Fuji lenses are very good. We're a couple of years on from this video now, but everything stated still stands. I use a 5Ds (5D mkIII with 50Mp). Seeing a clear viewfinder without electronics mucking about makes the clearly faster to use. I use it for Wildlife also, not only Studio. My son has an R7 and it is clearly very good, but I don't use 20fps, I don't seem to need eye tracking, (though I can se it's appeal and uses). It's big, so fits comfortably in my hand, all is comfortable. Sure an R5 would be great but more different, not worth the cost yet. I've also been shooting many years with I guess a smilar background to you. Thank again.

@@RoyRiley Life is tough sometimes! I think of it like swimming in the ocean and sometimes there are these warm "bubbles" of water and sometimes there are cold ones, and often there is no discernable reason why. I have Crohn's disease and am going through a bit of a flare at the moment so I totally understand going through bad times!! With cameras: I bought the sx50HS for a trip a few years ago (German girl broke my heart don't ask! haha) as something that was portable. My current gf (Nora! - a good one (finally!)) has a 600D. I am wanting to get my first camera that I could start my business with essentially, doing weddings/gigs/music videos for friends. So that's what I'm looking at. Nora has 3 lenses and I'm quite used to Canon now so that's why I thought that I could get upgrade. I would some interviews and portrait photography too and maybe some sports photography so that's why I was thinking about the 5d III. But in the rabbit hole I have seen that some of the lenses might not actually be compatible. There are so many things to take into consideration and it's a bit of overwhelming. But when I was a kid, before I discovered drugs, sex and rock'n'roll (I mean psytrance) I wanted to be a filmmaker - and since sobering up it has been really cathartic to start picking up some of those old ambitions. My 20s felt like a war with myself and I'm just getting back on track. So this is the path I'm on, and really, your videos have been so fantastically helpful today. So I'm really glad that my comments could help you too somehow! I love that you have these semi viral videos and then you have vids that teach and give advice, reminds me of Spielberg when he would talk about doing one film to entertain and one to educate. They're really helpful, you get amazing results, love the photography and hungry to learn more, but the stories are great too. Starting a youtube channel this last year has been challenging, I know how it feels at times, but hang in there, amazing stuff, really, really appreciated! I on't know if you're planning on doing more tutorial videos, or even just like, breaking down the basics or building up to teaching and offering a paid course, I think it would be great. You don't take yourself too seriously and you're not shouting at the camera like some do, hope you keep it up! Cheers again. Adonis

@@RoyRiley OK thanks mate.. tho I have really fallen in love with the 5d hahahhaha been watching these hacks people do to get the raw footage out of it and omg it's absolutely stunning.. I'll take your advice tho mate and have another look at the 70. Yes our channel is just about Leeds United, first year doing it, definitely trying to keep it fun, learned a LOT glad that I can not take it too seriously now and streaming instead of editing has been a massive time saver. I live in Vienna so I can't really film around the ground or do interviews which is something I want to do. I have worked in videography before for a mate in Tasmania filming weddings, really looking forward to getting back into it! Thanks for your messages and yeah hope my health will get back on track soon. all the best man! A livestream Q and A would be really cool "Snappy Saturday" or something haha I don't know. But yeah.. if you set up a Patreon or do a photography course I'll be in for it. Livestreaming is a bit nerve wracking at first, but honestly, it so much better than editing videos, and it's nice to interact with your community, I use restream but you could also go for streamyard, really easy to set up, relatively cheap, and yeah, it would really be cool to see you do that and upload more often. Cheers mate!

I love my Canon 5DIII as my work horse camera. I get asked to do 'event captures' involving several hundred people over many hours. Quite often I shoot 400-500 photos. The idea is to capture the essence of the day and what happened. Without question and without reservation I use the 5DIII. It is solid as a rock. The events are inside, outside, and with varying lighting conditions. With the 5DIII I know I am going to get the job done. I can take those photos back to the office and then process them quickly and upload them to the client site. People love the results and that is what I want.

Great video, I own currently own a 5d Classic and looking at the 5d Mkiii or 1ds Mkiii to add, not replace. These videos helped a lot and your pictures look amazing. I've had an a6000 and Nikon d3300, and currently have a Sony a6400 with tons of lenses (the camera I wanted to like), an EP1, a Lumix LX100 and sometimes use the wife's Sony a7iii with some nice glass... but she is always disappointed when she sees the pictures coming out of my 5d Classic with (now) inexpensive L glass. We are not professionals but to have the quality, durability and professional image quality at the price of an entry level mirrorless is a no brainer.. plus as you pointed out, if there are issues getting great images, the Achilles heel isn't in the camera, and amateur photographers get to learn the craft and get great pictures! Win, win my friend. Keep up the great work!

Again I'm no professional, but have had a few cameras at this point and really understand now what a photographer means when they say a camera makes them or inspires them to shoot. The dust issue has come up for me too and lasted about a month before I shook it off... had I paid $899 new I might be as bent as original buyers but at 200 quid I'm a happy man with great photos.

The 5d3 is without doubt a very capable and reliable camera but - Something worth thinking about is “what would a new camera do that my old one is not capable of?” Maybe adding a new lens or two to your old system could be the way to go.. Full frame is great but the lenses can be a bit pricey and the T3i you already have is capable of very high quality results in the right hands and with the right lenses. I do t mean to turn you off buying a new camera just giving the perspective that sometimes what we have is already good enough! Save your money and spend it on wine, women and song! I have a Canon 5DIII and, like you, it still has a spot in my good graces. It was my first FF DSLR and I don't use it for video, although I recall at the time when I got mine that it was frequently used by corporate videographers. I also have the R5 and it is interesting to note that the manuals suggest the relative complexity of the two: the 5DIII manual is 403 pages, while the R5 is 910! You ask what one would recommend for someone getting into photography seriously. I am on the Canon USA community support group and it is interesting to see how many people ask the question "what camera should I get?" - with minimum information. For me there is a series of questions that one must address to recommend a unit: 1. What is the budget? It is tempting to get persuaded to keep upping the ante here. It is important to remember that the cost must include the lenses one needs too. 2. What are the intentions? Is this just social photography (where the occasion is more important than the image. A student, hobbyist, enthusiast, semi-pro or pro (mind you the last 2-3 of these will not likely be asking the question to begin with! For those at the more serious end the camera as part of a system is important, as the more one invests in a brand and model series, the more expensive it is to switch. Right now, there are some serious bargains to be had from legacy DSLRs and EF lenses as people sell their gear and move to the MILC market. These cameras still take great photo's and offer some serious value. 3. What are the intended subjects? This is mostly about the lens FL range, but sensor size can also have an impact if one is shooting at the very wide end (where FF offers an advantage), or long tele (where a crop sensor offers benefits). 4. What will be produced? This is rarely asked but what it's all about. There is a massive difference in the required investment for high-end, high-res Art (with a capital A) prints, as opposed to putting on social media (that degrades the image anyway) or for digital device display. No point in buying a sledge hammer to crack a nut... 5. What about the ergonomics? Specs are one thing, holding the camera, using the buttons, wheels and menu system is another. Sony make amazing quality cameras, but (for me) their menu system is a nightmare... 6. What are you prepared to carry? The best camera is the one you have with you, so bulk and weight are critical. Still, if I was pressed to the wall, on the following assumptions: 1. Limited budget (I live in NZ so I have no idea of value in US$ or Sterling). 2. Enthusiast 3. General photography, people and scenery (at least initially) 4. Small photos (11x17), plus web publishing and digital display on a 55" screen (1920x1080) 5. Like Canon controls and menus but hope for some customization 6. Reasonably fit, no intention of multi-day hikes or such. Answer: For FF, Canon EOS 5DIII with EF 24-105 f/4, or APS-C Canon EOS 7DII with EF-S 18-135 IS USM Both are professional-quality, sealed bodies, although the EF-S lens is not, but it takes great images and has an equivalent FoV of 29-216mm. If they want a telephoto lens then the EF 70-300 MkII IS USM lens (on 7DII FoV equivalent to 112-480mm).

This is such a great and detailed response. I am smiling reading this over my morning coffee so thank you very much! I agree with everything you say. I get asked all the time about which new camera someone should get and I generally initially ask them what they wish for their fantasy new camera to do that the old one is not capable of? Sometimes it is a rather difficult question to answer. Your list is a very intelligent way to break this down and help people to make smart choices. I may do a video about camera choice in the future and I wonder if you would mind if I quote you in some way? I've just found this channel - it's really good. I agree with all that you say about the 5dIII. It's a superb camera, and like you say, it's the last of the 'basic' view bodies with no touch screen, flip screen etc. And I like that. It's my favourite body that I use for more static subjects (I use the 1DX for moving subjects like football and some wedding stuff), and it's the go to body along with a 24-105 for 90% of what I shoot. The 5Diii and the 24-105 is a reliable and wise pairing. There's also one thing that I've noticed which I really like about the 5Diii - it seems to resist the accumulation of dust on the sensor. Every other camera I have had and presently own seem to act as magnets for dust, which is a real pain. But the 5Diii has never ever needed a sensor clean in the years I've owned it. It's been to wet hot jungles of Borneo for 3 months, countless weddings, countless portrait shoots and is thoroughly reliable. I won't be going mirrorless while it still works for me!

I picked up a 5D MkIII used for $500 because of a high shutter count, and I have to say that I fell in love with the camera right away. I've owned the 5D, 5DII, and also a 7D, but the 5D MkIII is my favorite and if the shutter ever dies I will pay to replace it. I don't see a need to upgrade from it for my work.

Since this was my first real, DSLR back in 2017 I would recommend this camera to anyone just getting into portography. And though I can afford a canon R5, I’m actually scouting eBay for the 5D Mark three as my Hobby camera because photography is about how the shooter sees and captures the world, more than all the unnecessary bells and whistles most modern cameras have.

Hi Roy! I’m a portrait and wedding photographer and I currently use a 5D Mark iii and I absolutely love it! Right now I’m in the market to buy a second body for weddings and to use as a backup, do you think I should get another mark III and a new lens (I only have 2 lenses) or should I upgrade to the R6?
@RoyRiley
@RoyRiley 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! But I honestly do not have an answer for you. These things have to be personal choice! I would advise you to beg, borrow, steal or rent an R6 and give it a go for yourself. Shooting with an EVF is not for everyone so it’s worth trying out before committing. There is a certain beauty to having identical cameras because you can have them set up the same and flow between them is seamless. With regard to the extra lens.. go for it if it feels right! I have never regretted investing money in good glass. You can always trade if it’s not to your taste. Hope some of this helps in some way. Best wishes and good luck whichever way you go. Roy

@@RoyRiley thank you so much Roy! I shot with a Sony a7iii with the EVF & I absolutely hated it. I didn’t like how I felt like I was looking at a tv screen through my viewfinder, will the r6 feel the same way? Thank you so much! I’m thinking for my lens upgrade I’m going to go with a tamron 35mm 1.4 lens over the canon since it has fanatic reviews and is half the price point.

@@AureliaShrider no worries. EVFs... I totally understand what you mean. They give you a certain connection but remove CONNECTION! I have not used the Sony in question but I can say the R6 in my limited experience is rather good... but it’s still an EVF! Try one! Cannot comment on the Tamron 35 as I have not used it however Over the years I have generally regretted buying third party lenses with the exception of one Tamron. (90mm macro) and one sigma (50mm art). Try that 35mm and report back... Hope this helps. R

Excellent video Roy, I have a couple of Mk 111's and I totally agree that they are probably the sweet spot. I have shot with the 5d Mk 1V and it has better resolution but as you say you have to be more careful with your technique ( which of course is a good thing ) and then of course second hand they will cost much more. I am still very happy with the quality from the Mk 111 and even though I have now bought an R6 I am still loving the files and user experience of this classic camera.

@@RoyRiley Don't make me choose ! The R6 is so quick it has really added to the amount of usable frames with live action and this was noted by a client who didn't know I was using a different camera. Maybe the 5D files need less work out of camera but better dynamic range on the R6 and all my EF lenses focus quickly on the R6. I do love seeing the real world through a viewfinder like yourself so pluses and minuses for both cameras so maybe I can leave it at too early to say for now.

Hi. I have been taking photos since the early 1960s. My first camera was a Kodak Box Brownie (long since departed along with various other Kodak easy use cameras.) In the 1970s I graduated to a Canonet QL17 and then in the 80s and beyond to A1s and T90s. It took me a long time to go "digital" but, when I did, I started with an EOS 450D followed by a 7D (which I still use as a second body) and now my beloved and trusted 5D mk III. Now that I am 69 and retired, much as I would like to investigate new mirrorless technology - with the advantages for auto focusing etc. - I honestly cannot afford to make the transition. Over £4,000 for an R5 and equally eye watering prices for some of the lenses. Just because my 5D is old technology does not mean that it is not a great camera and it still takes fantastic photos. I hope to pick up some real bargains in lenses in future on the second hand market. Thank you for a very fair and honest review.

I currently have a 50mm 1.4 lens but struggling to figure out what would be another great lens to add to my kit that would cover most bases. I focus on portrait/editorial and street photography- do you have any lens recommendations that won’t completely break the bank?
@RoyRiley
@RoyRiley 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Louise! the obvious choice would be the 24-105mm L lens. the focal range is amazing for most things and the lens is sharp enough across the range. I end up using mine loads. Another lighter option would be the 24-70 F4, I have not used that lens but hear good things about it. The 85mm f1.8 is a great lens for portraits but can be a little limited beyond that. in terms of wide angle, lots of people use the 17-40mm L lens because it is great value. I personally have the 16-35mm F4 and find it really amazing for my purposes. Really it is important to think first about what it is you are trying to create and then research which lens will best get you there. Then start saving up! Hope this helps in some way. Good luck with it all whichever way you go. Roy

Putting an LCD loupe on these old school DSLRs (with live view) really gives you a beautiful, big EVF. I've had the excellent Kinotehnik LCDVF on my 7D for maybe 8 yrs now (bought the LCDVF just about when it was release). It's lovely to shoot with, helps so much with both for focusing when shooting video and when adapting vintage lenses for photography. A little unwieldy and clumsy sometimes but worth it

I bought my 5Dmkiii in 2014 and used it for video, using the magic lantern to be able to tweak settings and get the hdmi output without overlay. Compared to the cost of other video systems it was cheap and the great Canon glass made fantastic results, especially shooting people. It is a little lacking vs some of he new R series cams but it still takes an amazing image!

I agree that a basic-ish old dslr is a good first serious camera. If you can find one, I'd advise the 5D classic, which doesn't take videos and has a small handful of settings. The Mk III is now my next suggestion. This camera can operate beautifully at a basic level that any learner would appreciate now that the price is descending. The addition of advanced focus means it can serve in the kit of budding sports and action photographers. And it's a seemingly indestructible full-frame beast with a giant pool of great second-hand lenses.

I’ve been shooting with a T4i and a variety of lenses but need to go to a full frame camera for client work. I want the M4 but can only afford the M3 at this point and this is very reassuring. Two questions: a) how can I determine the shutter count and b) what are your thoughts on the first three lenses for portrait, commercial (products to architecture) and landscape photography? Thanks so much for sharing your expertise - really appreciate it!

Have a google and you will find something! I have heard of people using programmes that look at the metadata and the information is in there somewhere. Great video! It’s easy to get tempted to chase the shiny new tech, but the 5dmkiii is an almost perfect balance for the most. The resolution is enough that it’s going to be the glass that will be the limiting factor. It has pretty much all the things you need and less of the things you don’t. Heck, I cut my photographic teeth on. Zenit E and then moved up to a Pentax ME Super, so this thing is vast in terms of control by comparison! I say don’t bother with the latest, benefit from others who are and pick up one along with some Series ii Canon L glass and enjoy!
