I also attribute RPGMaker's collection of main horror games' popularity to VGPerson, who translated Ib, Mad Father, Misao, The Crooked Man, Mermaid Swamp, Hello? Hello...?, and some others. Them being made available (and by being made available, curated by) by this translator was probably something that made it more accessible to find good games in the genre.

On Ib being an example of traumatic themes being particularly clear staples of RPG Maker horror games but not being one of the more explicit examples of it, it starts with a kid getting separated from her parents in a public place and then kind of goes on to be about being forced to navigate (or at least get yourself out of) a stressful/difficult situation by yourself for the first time and, sure, technically having learned and grown from it, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be haunted by how jarring and scary an experience it was, with attention called to it by things like Ib’s innocence at the start being reflected in her inability to read certain words and the differences between her and Garry’s perspectives - and speaking of Garry, even in a situation without parents to protect her, Ib is still able to find a nice adult to help her, but considering he’s, like, a skittish college student also trapped in the museum, even if he’s perfectly well-meaning and stronger and wiser than her, he’s on surprisingly similar ground to her and still doesn’t represent the same authority and safety that a parent figure would; and meanwhile, she also finds herself running into the fact that while there are helpful Garrys out there, the nice-looking people you might run into when you’re by yourself and need help may not exactly be interested in helping you with your problems/getting back home (Mary).

I notice Omori in the thumbnail, and it makes me excited to see more people learning about it. If anyone reading this is interested in RPG horror games with dark themes and a rich story, Omori is a masterpiece. (EDIT) HOWEVER, I highly recommend everyone playing Omori go into it as blindly as possible. Its story is heavily centered around unexpected events and unknown information you learn throughout the game.

@angelschair9388
@angelschair9388 2 жыл бұрын
@@pancakes8816 I personally like it because of the story. The characters are the most down-to-Earth and human characters I've seen, and the foreshadowing in this game is masterful. I also love how the story feels so real (mostly), and it isn't afraid to get really real really fast. I do understand why some people DON'T like it though. I've heard the common complaint being the pacing, which I totally understand, as the format of the game does cause the pacing to feel slow, both in story and gameplay. However in regards to the story, I think that's the point. I don't want to go into details because of spoilers but I do get that some people want to be in the fun much more than Omori gives you, since the game has a lot of cutscenes and segments with little gameplay.
@pancakes8816
@pancakes8816 2 жыл бұрын
@@angelschair9388 i get that, and im cool with slow paced games. Some of my favorite games are considered VNs, I just find omori boring cause everything it does has been done before. It showcases anxiety, depression and other mental ailments, like daring today aren't we?
@angelschair9388
@angelschair9388 2 жыл бұрын
@@pancakes8816 Yeah it doesn't exactly tread new grounds in terms of main themes, although I believe the specifics (if you know some of the major spoilers) makes it stand out among similarly-themed games. It's also good to remember that while something may have been done many times before, for some players it would be their first experience with a game about mental illnesses, although that shouldn't be an excuse for people to keep making games like that over and over, as it could saturate the theming.

I am always happy when people talk about RPG Maker games and treating the genre with the respect it deserves. Maybe it's because they have been such a big part of my life, maybe I'm tired of the people I recommend them to treating them as not worth their time because of how they look / the engine they were made on / being old. one of my favorite more recent rpgmaker horror(?) games is yttd. it was started in 2017 and currently 2 and a half out of its three chapters are complete. it's not entirely a horror game as it definitely follows more aspects of debating and interacting with characters, but there are some very horrifying moments on top of an incredibly sad story overall. i'd highly recommend it as it is free to play at the moment!!

It'd also be cool if you also strayed off the games mentioned here and also covered stuff like ENDROLL or Miwashiba's games or the ones that came out after the genre's 5 minutes in spotlight eg. Hello Charlotte, Dreaming Mary, Pocket Mirror, Turtle Head: Unmasked, Midnight Train. Or maybe even take a plunge into the boundless world of Yume Nikki fangames. The genre may be niche nowadays but the community is very much alive and happy to deliver more short earnest horror experiences.

I graduated high school in 2015 so early let's play KZbin was very formative for me. I remember binge watching the witch's house, mad father, and ib videos like crazy and being obsessed with them. Almost makes me laugh how scared i was of Ao Oni.The rpg maker style of horror was so new and interesting and absolutely terrifying to me. To this day I still think The Witch's House is an absolutely amazing game with the way the deaths worked and the atmosphere was built, and that ending is spectacularly heart wrenching! I really want a longer vid that goes deeper into them and how they build their horror. Weirdly, my own introduction to this genre was actually a crossover fangame of Ao Oni called Hetaoni, which never ended up finishing bc the original creator lost all the files during an earthquake in Japan. It’s insane because it’s a community within a community within a community, yet somehow there was a huge cult following, to the point where there were full on translation projects, fanmade cosplay movies, animations, music videos,, the list goes on. It’s genuinely incredible the kind of stuff people got up to during this time period, and I wish I was just a bit older at the time so I could’ve participated more actively.

Strangely, my introduction to rpg horror was the Hetalia fangame community, where most games are made on rpg maker and many of which are horror games. I think one of the most popular Hetalia fans games was Heta Oni, Ao Oni but with the Hetalia characters. Since then, I've really enjoyed the rpg horror genre and other games that have taken inpsiration from games in the genre!

Bro the way you integrate chroma keyed environments and lighting and stuff like that is INSANELY inspiring. Love the surreal 3D model backgrounds (and you seriously Nailed the lighting). Keep it up, I'm lovin it.

Please oh please make this in a series! Games like Pocket Mirror are some of my favorite stories in games, let alone rpg maker horror.

I'm a recent subscriber of your channel. Discovered you by accident looking for FNAF lore after forgetting about the game for years. I love your analysis and the spot-on atmosphere you create with your music. Every video so far has been fascinating whether I'm familiar with the subject or not. Great work.

I think when discussing the origins of the genre it would’ve been good to at least mention Sweet Home and Clocktower. Both were hugely influential on rpg maker horror, even though neither were made in rpg maker. Hell, Sweet Home would go on to morph into the most recognisable horror game series of all time: Resident Evil.

Cool video. The recent spike in 3D pixelated and PS1-style horror games have really squashed the RPG maker horror game in mainstream, so it's good to see a video remembering how we got here.

I had a random thought about The Witch's House today which since I was watching your FNAF video made me click on this video and this is a nice dive into this scene. Personally the only ones I have really gotten into are The Witch's House, Mad Father and a lesser known one called Aria's Story although in the latter case it is way more uplifting especially with it's new endings, The Witch's House / Mad Father are definitely not as oh god these games especially their endings are so depressing and makes you feel terrible. Hearing you describe the hallmarks of these games and even seeing others you mentioned that I heard of like Yume Niki, IB and others was also a treat.

Haven't watched the video yet, but im hoping you mention The Crooked Man. I ADORE horror games, love playing them with friends for fun, but the crooked man is the only game that has ever successfully scared me. That game is fucking mental and I dont think anything will surpass how that made me felt. I cant put It into words, go play it

I'd definitely love a video about each individual iconic horror game. A section centered around the real world reasons for the creator making the game, how it spread, the creators reactions etc. would be really interesting.

If you ever come back to RPG maker, then I’d die for you to do a retrospective on OFF and Lisa and Lisa:The Painful. OFF while does not cover the parts that are being represented the best, it still does it in a great way. And the inspiration is just all over the place. And as for Lisa, It does an amazing job and is able to make an unlikable character likable in a great way while he also tries to find his daughter and change his ways as another tries to torment him and tries to make him go back. And the characters, oh my god the characters in those games.

my favourite game was ib. i replayed it so many times. there were also misao, mad father, witch's house, corpse party, ao oni (the last two i definitely didn't play, maybe because i was too scared to play them, no idea, i was 11-12 or something). rpg maker games hit different

RPG Maker horror games are some of my favorite games. I still remember the delightfully unsettling stories of Corpse Party and Misao, and how tense I was while playing The Crooked Man, Mad Father, and The Witch's House. I'm so glad to see you making a video about them and how effective they were at exploring darker themes. Thank you for another great video! I'd also love to see individual retrospective episodes about RPG Maker horror games.

I would *love* to see a retrospective series on these games!! RPGMaker horror games were a huge part of my childhood and really helped my media literacy and deeper appreciation for any multifaceted story. I was obsessed with The Witch's House and Ib especially and to this day I still adore them. Corpse Party, The Crooked Man, Wadanohara, Ao Oni, Mad Father, Misao, OFF, Yume Nikki, all of these games hold a very special place in my heart. It always makes me happy to hear others talk about them

I adore this video don't get me wrong. So many well made points and clearly a lot of work that went into it that really pays off. But near the middle I realized that the black paper background wasn't crinkling and it was actually just being rotated and I couldn't stop staring at it.
