I plan on using the maze rats system to introduce new people to d&d. My friends and I have found it easy to pick up d&d (mainly its mechanics) with our background in computer rpgs and card games like magic the gathering. We have tried to play d&d 5e with other friends and acquaintances, but some of them are still overwhelmed, even with 5e being more simple and streamlined compared to a game like pathfinder. As a dm, I think the simplicity of maze rats will be invaluable to introduce someone like a grandmother/grandfather or mother/father. Character creation is easy and it takes under 5 minutes. The system is d6 based, so any yahtzee or similar board game will have all the dice you need and the players would be used to that d6 die. I'm very excited to try this out.

The weakest point is the magic system imho. It's not ideal to be able to use just a few spells per day with randomised effects for whoever wants to play a spellcaster. If people are set into wanting to play this game, I feel like it would be best to integrate a magic system from another game like Dungeon World or any D&D edition.

I love the magic system but yeah a player came to me with this very same thing. You can swap the random spells generation with the 100 classic spells from Knave from the same author and voila, problem solved.

@@shannonmcordo another variation me and my group play with is having player roll the "spell recipe" as maze rats requires, but then not roll the effect/form/element and instead let the player choose them. Isnt as op as crafting a spell from all those tables, but is better than original. Also we run with spells being "scrolls" so you can hold more spells in your backpack (they are the size of the Elder Scroll from TES:skyrim). The difference is that scrolls burn once used and dont reset after 24h.
