Dragon Age Origins managed to tell a simple story in a great way (through moments like the rhyming oak tree or the brood mother quest). It had good characters and dialogue. That was the heart and soul of this game series

what series? there is only one game. i seriously think DAO was accidentally brilliant. after seeing the complete trash these people came up with after. not kidding. id we could have free cam in pause with veilguard and take control of companions, it might be a semi tolerable game. every game after DAO was just another action rpg basically.

Damn, haven't played Origins in years, but just in a couple of clips it shows how much superior it's writing is compared to Veilguard. And not only writing, animations, gameplay, design - if Dragon Age Origins released this year with current year graphics I very much believe it would've matched or even surpassed BG3.

Soundtrack to DAO also deserves some credit. I remember getting goosebumps from fighting Darkspawn on the deep roads and Alistair yelling "For the Grey Wardens!" and slamming his shield on some dudes face while that Epic music was on the background.

In all seriousness, the audio files for that game are off the charts. The opening theme *rocks the actual !@#$* out of a high-end sound system. (Seriously, if you hook it up to a proper home entertainment system - as opposed to basic gamer setup - you will hear entire notes that you've never heard. *It's amazing.* )

I agree. I mean it's funny because Origins looked really bad graphically when it came out in late 2009. Oblivion that was released 2006 looked better in many ways (Not the characters though lol). Still, the artsyle is very unique and carries the graphics. I can instantly tell from a picture or video that it's Dragon Age Origins, it's so distinct and awesome I just love it. Some of the outdoor areas do look really bad though, even for 2009 standards. Many interior areas do look really nice so I would say it's pretty inconsistent in terms of graphics. I never really cared though about it's graphics though, the game is so good anyway and I always get very immersed despite it's rather poor graphics, but great artsyle as you said

Another thing worth noting, is that the artists didn't know what the game engine was going to be able to handle, because they were "drawing" while the engine was being made. This means that many images are way higher res than they needed to be at the time, which works out pretty well for us today lol (As opposed to this game, which was made in the cheapest way imaginable for an engine that can't handle combat properly)

My problem with Veilguard is the terrible writing yes, but I can only inject at certain moments and times with my dialogue, but not every every thing that is spoken to me like in origins. They set the narrative with 4/5 lines and then I can only interject a small part of the story in my way...which is still not my way. Since my char already spoke back and forth.

i'm not going to play veilguard but there are few abandoned things after origins 1. grey wardens as main faction (hard to imagine more unique and interesting than that one) 2. mabari companion (dragon age 2 had one as summoning skill but more dog looking and almost without any story or interaction to it) 3. the awakening (architect and awakened dark spawn were a fascinating mystery and a completely wasted chance for future faction and maybe even race choice)

My wife said this: the veilguard is like eating cotton candy, while origins is like eating a steak. In the moment the cotton candy is satisfying, but it doesnt have the ability to actually fill your belly, and satisfy all your wants and needs, where as the steak is filling, flavorful, and keeps you lingering on the meal for hours talking about how delicious it was. She liked playing veilguard once. But didnt find its plotholes and lack of rpg options worthwhile. Missed the old days. Both of us are crbg fans and I couldn't agree more with her assessment, she didnt find the writing satisfying and is way more casual than myself about games.

No, there is better stuff out there, but it was a really nice RPG back then and I played it plenty. I'd rate KOTOR2, Ultima Underworld 1&2 and, Baldurs Gate 1,2,3, above it, to name a few - and several others like Original Sin 1&2 KOTOR 1, Morrrowind, Skyrim and Arcanum, could slot in above or below Origins, according to taste. I adjust my expectations relative to the year when each was launched, otherwise old games would never compete with more modern ones, graphically, but the oldest of the games like Ultima Underworld were quite revolutionary for their time and great fun to play. Some of what I loved best (in Origins) was the way you could set up a very specific table that prioritised what you and your companions would do in many situations in combat when you weren't controlling them (and you could jump into any companion to run them manually whenever you wanted). I also loved the varied background beginnings depending on which race you ran. How much better (and how much more effective) your companions were then, compared to the almost useless, uncontrollable nobodies you run around with in Veilguard. Morrigan (in Origins) was an absolute badass by mid-levels as a spellcaster - and it was very tough to leave Varric behind, as well. The strongest, most fun Dragon Age character after Origins was (imo) Cassandra - now there was another powerful female character, she was a fearsome fighter, was beautifully voiced, with really good dialogue to go with it.

Perhaps Dragon Age - Origins deserves some praise. It's solid as far as character development and combat are concerned. There is some dialogue reactivity outside of the beginning as well and some of the areas have good pacing and a decent variety of content. But it also has frequently aesthetically dull environments that often contain an unending row of tiresome samey combat encounters and a dearth of anything else. The plot mostly happens in cutscenes and without the player as we "gather" the four McGuffins. It's a good cRPG in the better areas, but often becomes a frustrating chore in the weaker ones.
@ainikki7006
@ainikki7006 Ай бұрын
On PC you can change this, outright skipping areas of little interest or great frustration (like the Fade), and there are fan projects/mods that make other areas, like the Arl of Denerim's Estate , a *lot* more interesting. Origins on its own is a good game. Origins with mods is incredible. You don't just get to choose your character choices with Origins, you get to choose the whole experience. I love the mod that lets you take your dog everywhere, for instance, and would never play without it.

The more videos I watch in regard to Veilguard the more bland it looks/feels. Maybe one day I'll try it when it's on sale but also videos like this one, remind me that it's not all about the shiny shiny. So I think I'm going to play Banquet of Fools - art style is great and early reviews on Steam are positive.

GoG actually fixed the crashes (at least for me)

Great video, I think I'll get back to Origins as well. One small note, the DAVG character progression is awful. Plenty of insignificant bonuses like +10% when covered in shit is just bad design.

You cannot compare the two because they are two fundamentally different games. After DA: Origins, the series went downhill. The issue is that games try to appeal to a wider audience, thus games are becoming watered down. A fact we have to accept from many AAA studios. I almost exclusively play indies these days or AA games. I don’t even get my hopes up anymore.

The difference is Origins Bioware cared about the game and nothing but the game. Veilguard Bioware cared about the message. The game was way down the list.

Yup but I'm not doing shallow content about it. Investing days to make these videos with insight that I hope can be helpful and understood.

@@rpgdivision The side-by-side really shows off just how different (in mostly terrible ways) Veilguard is.

Origins is a legendary. Two and Inquisition were...fine, i guess. But both are mastepieces compared to whatever veilguard is. Veilguard isnt even a true rpg, it just pretends to be one.

Origins needs a remaster very badly. The PC version is pretty bad with the crashes and broken UI above 1080p. Some quality of life changes would be nice too.
