The Best Souls-Like is a Disturbing RPG Maker Game (Overanalyzed)

Looking forward to reading about all your Black Souls opinions 😈 Edit: One recurring opinion I'm seeing is that this game is not a souls-like, mostly because of the turn-based combat. In my opinion, even turn-based combat can follow the design philosophy behind souls-like games. The combat in this game is incredibly punishing and one mistake in combat can result in you losing the battle. The game also having combat largely centered around boss fights fits within the souls-like genre. Additionally, learning from repeated deaths, checkpoints (bonfires) and limited health potions (estus flasks) are all staples of the genre and are present here. The games world is also an interconnected maze with many different biomes that all have an underlying dark and oppresive tone. The largest argument I can see against this game being a souls-like is that turn-based combat is not the norm and it compartmentalizes combat, removing the tension of being attacked out of nowhere. I personally don't think combat is the defining feature of a souls-like and that the other elements in the game, along with the combat still being challenging and punishing, are enough to categorize it as such. But, by all means disagree, these are some of my favorite comments to read.

I think the reason the dev chose to have the graphics be so poor is so the player knows what its like to be assaulted as well.

The graphics are either free assets (vast majority of the enemies) or the dev still learning how to draw for games (the girls). In the second game the art quality is drastically increased and there is more of it

They also look like the kind of children's scribbles you see when your kid's guidance counselor gives you a random call after art class. Much of it is definitely meant to make you feel unsettled, but is still aesthetic enough to appeal during the sex scenes. Honestly, the unique art style was what drew me in in the first place.

I think the sin counter adds weight because if you try to be good you can get a nice ending and blah blah blah. But to get the true ending, Spoilers You have to kill every single fairy tale character so you can return their book to the library. It was genuinely agonizing, I felt so guilty.

As someone who got all endings on BS1 and BS2, I can say with confidence that these two games are some of my favorite in general, playing these games was an amazing experience. And it is sad to see that most people won't ever experience it, for obvious reasons, as a lot of the content clearly would make a stable person question why they are playing such game. But yeah, if you're mentally deranged or simply don't care enough, DO PLAY THIS AMAZING MASTERPIECE.

The use of default RPG Maker assets serves for a bit of meta-narrative relating to the true ending of Black Souls 1 and what happens in Black Souls 2. Namely twisting the generic view on the world by using default assets used in hundreds, perhaps even thousands of other projects made in RPG Maker, and it implies "Mary Sue" isn't a creative entity; she relies on the classic tropes to manipulate Grimm, true to the origin of the Mary Sue character archetype from a Star Trek parody, A Trekkie's Tale. Toro Yori Ebi, the main creator of the Black Souls game series and the video comic series Touhou Igyoukyo, is currently working on three sequel games. A sequel to the actual first game of the Black Souls series, The Little Red Riding Hood game, then a game about the four princesses from Black Souls 1, and finally, as expected, Black Souls 3. But it is not known if he finally abandons the use of default assets in favor of self-created or commissioned ones.

Black Souls, Full Metal Daemon Muramasa, and Berserk are the 3 pieces of media that genuinely reflect on myself, and the Gore, R-rated stuff, and the disturbing shit in all of em makes it all the more visceral and real even though it's in an obviously made-up setting.

dear comment reader, if you aren't convinced by the main guy's opinion, let me tell you that as someone who is also repulsed by the omnipresence of sex all over the internet, BLACKSOULS is absolutely worth it. the first game mostly works as an entry point so that you can play BLACKSOULS II which is a game of gargantuan size for something that came out of RPG Maker, but definitely warrants not being skipped. the BS series and Demons Roots are games that made me realize that not all H-RPGs have to be bad, and Demons Roots in particular became by far one of my favorite games of all time, so I can absolutely vouch for Toasty here. not all media has to be morally green, and not all sexual content has to exist solely for horny purposes. that's what these games taught me, and why I feel comfortable recommending them in the first place.

4:26 You can go into the Room of Remembrance in the main hub to disable h-scenes at any time. One thing that should have been mentioned in regards to combat is the flexibility and options offered with different weapons and rings. There's a breadth of customization even with just a weapon slot and 4 rings. And that customization grows even more in the sequel. Besides that, it's a nice quick Black Souls video. It's an amazing game, and I'm glad for any attention these games can receive.

I'm big fan of this game. So much that I'm helping on a pseudo randomizer project of this game. Pseudo randomizer because it's the multi world randomizer project called Archipelago. BS1 pseudo randomizer is currently not on a playable state yet but I have a couple of tools that allow me to make a simulation while playing with others(as multi world imply). The game is open enough and customisable enough and broken enough to make an actually very funny randomizer experience. I know so much stuff about this game than I should. We are also did some simulation for BS2, but that experience is still pretty rough without actually proper implemetation as there are some trigger that are very annoying for a player to avoid and lose items. Anyway I also very love how your choices matter on this game. You regret making some poor choices that make some characters die without knowing what you were supposed to do. You try you best to save them. To be the good guy in a grimm story. It may still end up badly but at least you are trying to give more meaning and hope to characters of this game. I love how fast new game plus is because most of time lost in the game is about exploring, farming and fighting bosses so even if new game plus make the choices less impactful, the endings of the game give a lot more meaning to them. If there are no bad choices, there is no meaning to good one. (some more spoilery matter below) About sin(one of few mechanics that was poorly handled while BS2 make a much better job about it), people understimating it often can miss one of ending which require befriend with almost all heroines and having 0 sin(there is npc that remove sin so it's not a problem as one of girl require sin to be be recruited) and choosing touch yourself at the "final" choice. I saw this a very common mistake that people make. I know people that didn't know about this ending despite thinking they already saw all ending from both games.

Glad this game is getting the attention it deserves. If you liked Blacksouls, I recommend you look into Hero and Daughter and Your Turn to Die. Not R-18 games, but great games nonetheless.

You definitely should at least get all the endings before you move on to the sequel. The game has ng+ for a reason and it's not just for fluff. You can also toggle adult scenes on or off in the gallery. You can change your character sprite there too (its even required for a scene with the final boss of the traditional endings)

Gonna be honest. You truly get it and conveyed it perfectly why Black Souls has *those* options. It's a choice, it always is the choice to give in and be that person or rise up and get the better outcome. (lol those who know kihihihi) Eroge games have both good story, *plot* and not to mention characters and banger music more so than any other genre in my humble opinion. Adult games are adult for a reason and people who can't see all aspects of it are really handicapping themselves by being plain stupid, so if you will get into the sequel I'll definitely want to see the review as well since it expands in everything this one did and more. I remember finding out about this game, I want to say in 2022. And I was sold. As a man who enjoys both turn based combat mechanics, and Dark Souls... and adult content... This game, it's sequel, and The Heart of Darkness were all solid finds. And while I prefer the production quality of The Heart of Darkness, I will say the story and mechanics in Black Souls are much better.

Yep, can confirm, game is insanely good. 1st and 2nd, both are awesome. To be fair, there are many dope RPG Maker games, but some hidden by 18+ mark, like Monster Girl Quest (highly recommend both initial trilogy and paradox) or both Black Souls that will probably never appear on steam are true hidden gems, it's hard to stumble upon them and if you actually find it, it's hard to even start the game, since they rarely grip you from the beginning.

​@@Toastyfunnyguy in case you're interested, another 18+ RPG Maker game that I found quite nice is the last sovereign though it's quite a bit different than BS. TLS has a decent amount of country management and politicking, which I can fully understand if you don't like it because asking yourself "what will be the long term consequences of investing in the construction of an airship now instead of investing into the repair and maintenance of the roads" is something I don't imagine a lot of people like too much. But I think the game does a great job in having the players choices actually matter and have an effect on the world. Also if you decide to check it out, the beginning is purposefully bad (it kind of blindsided me and almost made me not play it)

I notice you linked the pirated version. I think the creator deserves the money, plus anyone who should be playing an R-18 game should be able to buy it. Might I suggest you replace that link with a note saying you can get the game on DLSite? (Or link it if you can but I understand you might not be able to link an H site on youtube) Other than that I like how you talked about more than just the shock and talked about the combat and how it's good despite the graphics. Really well rounded out for a 10 minute video! This definitely isnt the game for everyone but personally this is my favorite RPGMaker game. The second one is actually amazing. I love the weapon system, the bosses, the writing (Yes even those scenes) and the creators art is really amazing in the second game! It takes the sketchy style and massively improves upon it. I actually already considered linking to the paid version, but there’s a reason I didn’t. This game already has so many barriers to entry. I want more people to give this game a chance, and I’m sure the dev does too. If the person ends up liking the game enough, they’ll pay for it. More people talking about the game is a pretty good alternative to pay in the meantime. That is my personal philosophy around all this, but if the dev reaches out and would like me to change the link, I happily will. @ oh yea, there’s also 2 NPC’s that are able to raise/lower Sin for some Souls Also there’s a surprising amount of people who analyzed the games, like Leonidas Umbra(showed up in the vid), Baka-kun, VladePosting, Bored Ronin, another guy(can’t remember the name) that mainly cover HGames, Frapollo94, Tenma Maemi and a BUNCH of Russian ones too. But apart from those 3 (small)mistakes this is a perfect entry into the series!

Grat video man, the japanese ero rpg market has a lot of hidden gems even if it doesnt seem like it at first (cant help it i guess, 98% of games in that market are kinda trashy, but the other 2% makes it worth the hassle). You should check out a franchise called the SEQUEL series, by hakika, despite not being as lore heavy as Black Souls, it has a lot going on it that makes it stand out among other games: original OST, surprisingly deep world building, a lot of games to play (8 games in the series as of now, both mainline and spinoffs, including a separate horror game, and another 7-8 games that are a PREQUEL to this series), a developer with surprising work ethics (dev doesnt sleep it seems, he does the coding, writing, art, and music all by himself for 30~ish hours long games and it takes him only one year or so to complete them), overall wholesome and cozy vibes and more. An underrated gem, heavily recomended.

Personally, if there is a way to make the sin counter more 'free' as in you can decrease and increase it during certain paths, kinda like how you make good or evil choices in Baldur's Gate 3, the Dev's would've added it no? I think it's fine as it is, telling of a souls slowly getting corrupted once you decide that you want to be a bad guy. Once you cross a line, it's tough to go back.

That’s a really great way to view it, some decisions we can’t come back from. Perhaps there could be a way to better explain this mechanic to players at the start of the game so they take it seriously and don’t get stuck noticing it later in a playthrough. But, I’m with you, it’s a cool mechanic in how it helps communicate the themes of the game!

Idk about BS1, But in BS2 there is an item which you can use freely to switch between 0-100 SEN. You only need to unlock it once unless you do a complete save so SEN shouldn't be a problem. There's also plenty of other ways to mess with SEN freely if you have yet to reach that point in a playthrough. (Ie. turn scenes off and spam struggle snuggle a prisoner).

I wouldn't called it free, but in BS1 there is a guy that sells tainted souls, which raises your Sin level. He is in the swamp Also there is one guy who could remove all those sins for a price in the starter area

The graphics work well in this game. I do like games that use lots of custom graphics, like how the Gaia's Melody games are mostly custom graphics, or games that use them in ways that suit the story, like the first Hello Charlotte games. Both are great game series, if you're interested.

I was a huge Echo607 fan back in the day, I bought her game the second it came out. Never really resonated with me unfortunately, though her custom art is awesome! Still, in Black Souls I feel there is a lot of artistic direction with the art that goes beyond just the visuals and tells a really deep story in and of itself, despite the default assets.

Is this game's lore Bethesda style (so long as you find all the pieces the game tells you the whole story) or soulsborne style (half the pieces are missing and there's no obvious order to any of them and you have to put everything together on your own)? Sir, please, I just got recommended this game or series rather after watching a video on Monster Girl Quest, I have been given Soundtrack vids, cute dancing vids, compilations of what looks like the Dark Souls 2 cover art guy holding an Anime Alice in Wonderland girl. (The side bar is even recommending me a 30+ min Lore video...there is no escape) So, it's dark, completely fudged up, and debaucherous!? It's not cute whimsical adventures... I've already bought Red Hood's Woods, Black Souls 1 and 2 off DLSite. I can feel my sanity, my already shallow grasp of innocence fading... I'm just a scared little white boy (I'm 26), but alas... Someone... must find... ALICE! (Wish me luck, I'm going to try the series and see whether or not I end up in an Insane Asylum like the American McGee Alice in Alice: Madness Returns)

Turn based definitely still turns players off, there’s tons of comments arguing the game isn’t a proper souls like because of the combat. But, that’s true of most any design choice. It’s just people who enjoy turn based is a smaller amount than people who enjoy action combat, so it limits games. Doesn’t make them bad!

This game is a masterpiece. That's a great example of a "H" game that can be played for The story and bameplay because It is that good, you gotta respect a rpg game where you CAN beat anything at Lvl_1 and be fun, so the "H" part is basicly a bônus 😂 Crazy Twist on ending C and a continuation following ending D. Also, puch The fairy.
