Hmmm decent review. I own this identical model, bought it new in April 2013, price was about R350K back then. It was actually offered with a (4 speed) automatic gearbox soon after the 2.5 was launched. The part about the engine is spot on. The 2.5 performs far better than expected, partly due to shorter overall gearing but mostly due to having really solid outputs (for the time). In economy it absolutely shines. Lifetime average consumption on mine is at 13.8km/l or 7.2 litres per 100km. For the type of vehicle it is that is much better than even my most optimistic expectations. Being a Toyota, reliability is sort of a given. After 250 000km (about 70% of those on bad gravel roads), the only thing that has stopped working is the hooter. Of course it requires the usual maintenance, servicing every 10K km and some expected consumables (a set of rear shocks, 2 sets of front brake pads, 2 sets of wiper blades, it’s on its 3rd battery and some bulbs has required replacing) but even those were decently priced. The OEM tyres will last about 70 000km per set if you take care of them (correct pressures, alignment and balancing). For a body on frame SUV it drives fairly well. Ride comfort is good once you get used to the jiggling. Handling is 99% vice free too. It can surprise you over very badly rutted gravel, the rear has a tendency to step out of line abruptly and with very little notice. The standard stability control system is however quite effective at correcting this, and if you’re even moderately competent behind the wheel this little quirk should not pose too much of a challenge. Off road ability on this model is not great. Plenty of clearance and a rear diff lock helps but it just doesn’t have the traction at the rear wheels nor the low speed torque to tackle the rough stuff. Payload is fairly marginal for a 7 seater. Once every seat is occupied you are pretty much at the limit of what it’s allowed to carry, so factor in a trailer if you have the need to move many people and their luggage. Incidentally it tows quite well, even with 2 tons behind it performance remains sufficient, although your fuel consumption may easily double 😅 For the price it offers a tremendous amount of vehicle, and as such is hard to criticise. Just about every negative I can think of would have been easily overcome if the vehicle cost more money. A lot of the “negatives” can be addressed with aftermarket upgrades as well (cruise control, Bluetooth, better sound, etc). Of course by modern standards it’s extremely spartan and quite crude. It’s a bakkie based SUV after all. But for anyone practically minded with sensible expectations, this is a solid buy that will serve you well for many decades.

Greetings from Bergvliet, Cape Town. What's the difference between the 2.5d4d and 3.0d4d in terms of engine sound? For me, as a blind person, engine sound is highly important because that helps me identify various cars. The 3.0d4d, in my opinion, has too much turbo noise, it doesn't have that distinct truck-like sound like a 90's Isuzu KB 2.5/2.8, and for a few seconds after start up there is quite a bit of fan noise in the engine which increases when reving and accelerating for the first time which I find quite annoying.
