ROUNDTABLE RELAY!!!
I've tossed out my pitch for a Smash Reboot, so now it's the audiences turn! In this livestream we are going to continue diving into viewer feedback, try to get to as many as possible, and see if anybody else has some cool ideas for what direction this series should take!

Thanks for reading my submission and giving feedback. I definitely agree on the point that I don't commit as much as I should with the roster in relation to the buff mechanic. I made this document 3 months ago, so my feelings here have changed a bit. The main reason I only gave charmander the evolution gimmick, was because I felt that if all the other pokemon had it, then it would feel less unique. Also let's be honest here, Pikachu is way too iconic of a design to not be on the character select screen. Bandanna dee probably could be swapped out for someone else from Kirby, but I've only played forgotten land, so I wasn't aware of what Magalore could do. My concept here was very much a compromise, bringing in new elements while trying to not sacrifice the series current identity, as in game design, you have to make compromises on your vision all the time (sorry if that came off as condescending). Its because of that that I still tried to focus on characters who were more recognisable. This is why characters like Bandanna Dee or Chun Li were picked over others. I personally like Smash as this sort of hall of fame, so that naturally impacted my decisions here. Not trying to deflect the criticism or anything, I just thought I'd explain why I made the choices that I did.

Alright, as promised, here's my response to my section: - The frequency definitely depends on what circles you hang out in, but the "reference-first" mentality is still alive and well. - The tag-team Custom Moves split was interesting to hear about from the other perspective. I feel like for Pokemon Trainer specifically, you opened my eyes to how having seperate CMs for each of the Mons would almost be like customizing a Pokemon team as you would in the main series, which is just a fun concept. Still not sure if it's the definitive solution I'd go with, but I'm sure there's more nuance that I'm subconsciously neglecting. - I'm glad I was able to sell someone on the idea of seperating Mii Fighters' weapons from their clothing. Like I said in the doc, it is FAR from a major problem, but one I think would be nice to rectify. - Thinking about it, yeah no Final Smashes still wouldn't be legal lmao - Honestly, yeah, you could make Power-Up States work in Ultimate, but the idea is to have the fighters' designs partially revolve around them, which itself could be a solid shakeup to the formula. - #AdventureModeSweep - I think I started to acknowldge how silly dismissing Smash Run entirely was by the point I got to the lobby section, heh. I still don't think it'd be super optimal (and I'll defend Smash Tour with my dying breath), but if people wanna make it happen, who am I to judge? - A 2D lobby would be interesting - I think I'd still prefer 3D, but either works. Also, I imagined little chibi versions of the fighters being the avatars used in the lobby and not Miis, but why not both? - You do have a point about Walled Forms taking more work than Battlefield/Omega forms. - To be fair, the roster size estimate was more based around what I believe Nintendo would do and not necessarily what I thought was best. I do believe Melee's roster is a bit smaller than I would like, but I'd be A-OK with 39 characters like Brawl had, if not slightly less. - That said, I do see your point about the whole reboot feeling kinda middlegroundy. Maybe it's my people-pleaser side, maybe it's me subconsciously looking through the lens of making the game sell well despite not actually existing, but I do feel like I was covering a lot of bases than hard pivoting in one particular direction. Would I have done it differently considering this? Not entirely sure. Regardless, yeah, this is a bit more of a "compromisey" reboot, which was always kinda the intention. - About not reworking the veterans; I do get your point about not really bringing enough in that department to justify cuts. That said, though, I will restate that designs would be focused around synergy with Power-Up States, so when I say I'm not reworking the veterans, I really mean I'm not doing change just for the sake of it. I want fighters to be reenvisoned around the Power-Up States and what they bring to the table, so maybe I shoulda harped about that more. In short, yeah, characters WOULD change, but the changes made would mainly be related to the new features and not just changing them just because they're older moves. (Y'know, now that it's been featured, maybe I SHOULD do a roster for NSSB just to illustrate what I mean...) - Overall, glad you liked the ideas! Like I said, there's a lot of nuance to this, and I evidently let some things slip through the cracks, but I still had fun putting everything together. Looking forward to the next RR!

At 51:00 expecting there battle royale to be smash run. In a universe where a Nintendo game or even a smash bros would have good online, this would be fun

My thing about custom moves is that it would suck from a competitive standpoint. I think about Mortal Kombat 11, competitive players were disappointed that you had to choose what cool stuff your character could do before a match, rather than having all the cool stuff available like previous games. I feel like it’d be the same way in smash, where you put all this dev time into something that diehards will be annoyed by and casuals will probably ignore. I really like custom moves as a dumb, fun, broken mess. Let the characters have projectiles that bury or stun. Give burst movement options to everyone. Go wild. Importantly, they’d have to be easier to unlock, and would make a great unlockable after beating that character’s arcade mode. The higher the difficulty it’s completed on the more moves received. Aside from Miis. If Miis are still in they should still be reasonable moves.

I tried toying around with a customizable character concept for my own reboot roster, but I came to that exact same conclusion. I’d much rather see customization in the way of costumes, assists, and maybe 2 or 3 selectable final smashes per character. Adding some depth and versatility to matchups while still keeping the base character designs fully fleshed out and inspired.
