I've said it before, but it bears repeating: Versetta Stone should make corners, with asymmetric lengths, in a random pattern. Those would eliminate the raw edge issue ... which I find detracts significantly from the overall aesthetic.

I'm always surprised Versetta doesn't have a corner pre cast available. Seems like a big oversight in their catalog... Would love to see and hear more about the gutter install and the big garage doors coming up. I grew up with Iowa hydrants as well (actually in Iowa) but I like hydrants on the building for the utility. I put them around the corner on both sides from the front about 3 feet up (none of this bending over nonsense and kinked hoses because they're too close to the ground.)
@app-o-matix7 ай бұрын
No precast corner(s) is astounding to me as well. If Versetta has been working with them for 8 years, you would think this would have been solved long ago.
@JimDonald-hu1kw5 ай бұрын
The rep I spoke with claims they don’t have them because there would only be a few variations and if you used them for tall corner then the repeating pieces would start to look too fake? Makes sense

Kyle, Love watching you and Greg work. You guys are a well oiled machine and really seem to love what you do. I'm a big fan of Versetta or Evolve Stone and plan on using it on my new house I'm designing now. I know Versetta Stone has the built in water/air channel behind it, but it seems like way too small a gap. Was curious about your reasons for not using a true rainscreen, like slicker max, behind the stone. I've been told that having a min 1/4" behind the cladding, is important to get the proper air flow to dry out any water that gets behind. Some building scientists encourage 3/4" for best results.

Question? What about a drainage barrier behind the stone. We are planning on something like the versetta but we have the zip osb.
@srchubz2 ай бұрын
there's a built in drainage channel behind it. manufacturer recommends WRB... so zip has you covered
@elidennison99023 ай бұрын
what is the reccomended thickness of OSB or plywood required for the screws/nails to properly hold? i would imagine that a nail going into half inch OSB wouldnt have very much holding power. most of those nails are not in the studs of the wall.... i would think it would require at least 1 inch thick OSB but preferably plywood to retain that holding force
@srchubz2 ай бұрын
7/16" or 1/2" is okay using # 10 x 1 5/8" screws. But the manufacturer says at least 2 fasteners have to hit framing so plan for that

In Norway, we adhere to a building practice where we leave an inch to one and a half inches of open space between the cladding and sheathing. This serves multiple purposes, such as allowing for water drainage in case of infiltration and aiding in keeping the wall cool when directly exposed to sunlight.
@deadlata97677 ай бұрын
That gets done in US also, at least in my region. In some areas it is code. Usually referred to as a rainscreen or ventilated rain screen here.
@GJohnson-zp3vo2 ай бұрын
In Canada the rain screen and cavity wall principals are very important to follow. If not expect a damp wall with a drastically reduced lifespan. We build crap these days. I guess it's more important to imagine something over acknowledge what it actually is or as in this case what it isn't.

Looking great as always! For your corners, I wonder if you could cope or relieve the back of the overlapping piece. I’m thinking of those diamond blades that chuck into a grinder for cutting tile, but there could be a better tool. Like you said at 45:05 it will probably take more time and be messier, but it may yield a better product that is worth it. If you already have the tools, it’s at least worth hacking away at scrap pieces to go through the motions and test.

Kyle, why dont you apply a tape strip all the way around the building at each nailing level before installing the stone?(or even better - a single strip of vapor dry like you did on the roof) To the best of my knowledge, the LP smart side, is not self healing but the tape is - Water can and will get behind that versetta stone, and run down the wall, but will also get on a nail and the nail will act as a wick. If you put a strip of tape all the way around the building at each level you are nailing the stone, wont that help prevent water wicking into the wall on each nail?

With the gutters, I really hope that you’ll pipe the water away from the building with schedule 40 PVC! Don’t use any corrugated pipe because it blocks easily, gets crushed easily and is really hard to lay flat with enough fall. Make sure you have a decent number of down spouts too. I’m interested in where you’re gonna run the water.

As far as guttering I would be curious to know how they size it. Sometimes I think they should have installed 4" on my home instead of 3" because the water can overflow on heavy rains. And over times that is no bueno on the fascia board.
