For the cam covers, the RTV goes in the corners on the head, between the cylinder head and gasket; not in the groove between the cam cover and cam cover gasket. Intake gaskets go on dry, no sealant/RTV needed.

I like your method of opening bags; neatly with a razor blade. I've observed that in all of your videos. I have my own thing where I always use scissors, no exceptions. I never tear things open. Your videos are like therapy, watching straight up junk get beautifully restored. Next equipment purchase should be a vapor honing cabinet.

Just found this channel, it's showing me what I'm in for soon on my own car. I'm currently powder coating my GDB WRX manifold and rocker covers to the red crinkle finish. Gonna be refreshing the gaskets and doing the timing belt.

I do this stuff everyday and it so therapeutic to watch and learn more. Awesome trick with the valve covers gasket sealant on the tight spots. I have great luck with Hondabond, Ford gasket, Ritestuff and Cnc other gasket sealers in small quantities in just the right spot. Awesome resto, mate. Cheers👌🤘

Great rebuild, and detailing, looks very complicated with all the pipework etc. Looks great in the engine bay. Guessing because it is a flat four adds a lot of external pipework?. My engine rebuild is limited to an old mini, due to the crankshaft to gearbox idler gear bearings disintegrating. Many thanks for sharing and best regards from the Black Country.

The coolant crossover pipe is quite normal as any other japan designed engine in that era... Alot of other extra piping is the one connecting waterpump to the turbo coolant reservoir and plenty of crankcase breather point...about 6 in total if not mistaken (2 on each rocker cover, and 1 for each side of engine block) Not to mention the massive intake manifold and fuel hardline underneath it... Anothing daunting task is installing that super long timingbelt (double the length than a normal inline engine) and plenty of belt idler bearing and the need to line up 5 pulley marking point (4 camshaft+1crankshaft)

Thanks a lot for the clear view on tensioning the belts for the crank pulley. I’m going to be installing a new lightweight crank pulley and this helps a lot on how to re-tension everything back down again. Great video!

Hello, I like how your engine and car turned out. I was wondering since it has been 3 years how has the exhaust thermo wrap held up? I was told not to use this thermo warping cause it absorbs water and will assist in rust accumulation or quicker deterioration of the exhaust manifold. Have you found this as an issue?

So far its been perfect, still a nice tight wrap, clean, and as far as I can tell there has been no degradation but tbh the car isn't really out that much and it only comes out on dry days so I wouldn't say I really give the wrap a fair all weather testing.

when I assemble the engine I always use copper grease, it is temperature resistant and prevent bolts seizures

Yeah i didnt bother bleeding the steering as i had a million other checks to do in the limited time i could run the engine without coolant before the internal temps got too high. Lets hope so just hearing that scooby rumble makes me so excited to drive it again! Good question they are all different so that you cant possibly mix them up when they are off, they are all marked as well to make doubly sure such as L IN ( left inlet ) L EX ( left exhaust ) etc etc.

I'm doing the exact same with a 94 gc8 jdm Impreza just now. I got as far as MOT pass then engine has died a week later. Rev counter danced all over the shop then engine cut off. It cranks but doesn't start. I live in Scotland and need advice on best people to look at engine please? Any tips or help greatly received. I replaced cam and crank sensor with no change.

The engine was fully rebuilt and forged before i started my KZbin channel so unfortunately the rebuild wasn't documented but i can assure you its fully rebuilt i wouldn't go to this much effort for an engine thats not rebuilt :)

Wow that sounded great. Is that the stock exhaust, I don't recall if you mentioned it. Also, did you paint the intake manifold yourself? I'm curious how that'll hold up; looks insanely nice though!

Thank you, The exhaust is a custom made stainless steel one from the cat back, it releases the iconic Subaru rumble without being too loud :) Yeah i restored the manifold a long time ago with red wrinkle to the exact same finish as an STI manifold. The wrinkle finish if done correctly is extremely tough ;)

Really Random Channel then might as well do the transmission and pitch stop while your at it. The four in total really transforms the way a performance Subaru feels and drives for very little to no increase in NVH and not a huge outlay in cost with the benefit of being oem parts.

They are an interference engine, if the belt goes the valves are getting bent.

Hi, The belt covers go on with 5Nm or 3.6 ft-lbs of torque. Nicely spotted the small split is only on the outermost layer of the hose and hasn't compromised its ability to hold vacuum.

Hi, Yeah it got a nice new clutch in it. Im hoping to get as close to 400 as possible. 400hp is about the limit for the open deck before you end up running into issues with the liners.
