Welcome to the next episode of the Subaru Impreza build on my wonderfully random channel :)
You can find the links below to most of the products used in this engine restoration.
In my previous video you seen seen me restore the engine bay from a rusty crusty mess into a better than new place for the engine to live. So lets crack on and get the engine rebuilt and running.
First Job on the list was to fit the new rocker cover gaskets, as stated in the video i use a little RTV silicone in the extreme angles around the cams as his is a know area for these gaskets to leak due to the angle not compressing the same as the rest of the flat surfaces of the gasket. once the gaskets are in i fit new rubber washers to the bolts then torque them all up in the correct sequence so as to get even pressure on all the gasket surfaces.
I then moved on to the timing belt cases, its pretty much the same story here new gaskets, washers bolts then torque to spec. I zinc plated and yellow passivated the brackets you see on the left of the casing to add a little bling to the otherwise dull looking plastic.
I then rotate the engine 180 degrees so that i can easily access the underside of the engine to fit the manifolds and engine mounts. The manifolds were mounted with brand new fixings and gaskets to ensure there are no exhaust leaks, The exhaust system is also heat wrapped in titanium heat wrap to try and keep the engine bay temps down and protect the oil filter and sump from excess heat.
Once finished on the underside i rotated the engine back to the top and made a start on fitting the coolant lines,vacuum lines and fitting the air conditioning compressor,alternator and power steering pump.When these items were fitted and torqued down i fitted new intake manifold gaskets with a nice bead of sealing compound to ensure an air tight seal then torqued the intake down to spec.
After that it was just a case of fitting some small gaskets, clips and fitting the fan belts as you can see in the video fitting and tensioning these belts isn't a hard job.
Then came the fun part hooking the engine upto the crane and lowering the engine into the bay for the first time in so many years. I was terrified of scratching any of my lovely new paint but im glad to say the engine went in without any fuss or drama and no damage was done. After this it was a simple case of bolting the gearbox to the engine,bolting the engine mounts,hooking up the electrics,vacuum lines,sensors, adding some fluids and we were ready to turn the key :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A little History
The project in question is the engine bay in my 94 Subaru Impreza WRX. As i can be heard saying in the intro of this video i love impreza's and i wanted a rust free one as all the UK ones suffer from lots of rust issues so in 2004 i imported this car from Japan and it was totally rust free when it arrived all those years ago. It has a couple of blisters here and there now but thats to be expected when living in Scotland.
Anyway im getting off track, I was having lots of fun driving the car at full boost everywhere until 2014 when the thought popped into my head " lets go for more power" so i took the engine out and begun the process of having it all upgraded, better gaskets, race bearings, forged pistons, con rods etc etc then life got in the way and the engine was put to the side and the car was stored in a shed for the past 5 years.
The initial condition of the car looks horrifying but its only a thick layer of dust and crud on it and there is a good layer of carnuaba wax separating all the crud from the paint so a quick pressure wash and she'll be looking good again but for now the focus is on the engine bay and engine.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throughout the video as im getting rather tired of people re-uploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.

For the cam covers, the RTV goes in the corners on the head, between the cylinder head and gasket; not in the groove between the cam cover and cam cover gasket. Intake gaskets go on dry, no sealant/RTV needed.

Hey, thanks for the advice and with a name like MrSubaru I'm certainly not going to argue with you as you clearly know your stuff ;) But my engine is dry so im happy with my use of sealant... even if it was excessive haha.Thanks for leaving a comment.

Sorry for the grammar, my English is very bad, that's why I use google for translation. For other videos I have already written: I am very pleased and very first with what Sorgfallt you work. The workshop is always very clean. The tool is very clean and very well maintained. In videos of others I am always disappointed. There it is messy. Basics are ignored. I learned locksmith. You notice that for example. To tighten screws crosswise. They use torque wrenches. It is always a pleasure to watch you.

Great rebuild, and detailing, looks very complicated with all the pipework etc. Looks great in the engine bay. Guessing because it is a flat four adds a lot of external pipework?. My engine rebuild is limited to an old mini, due to the crankshaft to gearbox idler gear bearings disintegrating. Many thanks for sharing and best regards from the Black Country.
@AmirPomen
@AmirPomen 4 жыл бұрын
The coolant crossover pipe is quite normal as any other japan designed engine in that era... Alot of other extra piping is the one connecting waterpump to the turbo coolant reservoir and plenty of crankcase breather point...about 6 in total if not mistaken (2 on each rocker cover, and 1 for each side of engine block) Not to mention the massive intake manifold and fuel hardline underneath it... Anothing daunting task is installing that super long timingbelt (double the length than a normal inline engine) and plenty of belt idler bearing and the need to line up 5 pulley marking point (4 camshaft+1crankshaft)

Nice to see you again :). Glad you enjoyed this episode. Yeah i didnt bother bleeding the steering as i had a million other checks to do in the limited time i could run the engine without coolant before the internal temps got too high. Lets hope so just hearing that scooby rumble makes me so excited to drive it again! Good question they are all different so that you cant possibly mix them up when they are off, they are all marked as well to make doubly sure such as L IN ( left inlet ) L EX ( left exhaust ) etc etc.
