I just found a CD of these guy's album Svefns og Vöku Skil on our kitchen table. Never heard of the band. Asked around and nobody in my family knows how the CD got into our house, apparently it's been here for years. So I decided to check out the music and I'm very pleasantly surprised, this is beautiful. So... thanks, universe, for randomly giving us an Árstíðir album.

Lyrics (as heard by a non native 'speaker') Við stóra strönd horfir yfir (By the long coast, looking over) og hugsar of langt, of mikið (and she thinks too long, too much) og tíminn líður þá breytist svo margt (and time ticks, then changes so much) sem aldrei nein hafði fyirir séð (like no one has ever seen) næstu nótt förum heim (the next night going home) tökum ekki eftir þeim (we don´t notice them) þungu skýjum sem herja á (the heavy clouds which gather above(TN in the sense of gathering an army, literally means 'make war')) sjórinn gengur á land (the sea marches to land (tide rises)) skrifa í svartan sand (I write in the dark sand) ljóðin þin og leyndarmálin min (your poems and my secrets) þvi fleiri stundir sem líða (so many hours elapsed) hun finnur nu til, of mikið (she´s feeling pain now, too much) og réttir hönd sína segir svo margt (and her outstretched hand says so much) grætir en fær aldrei svar (she cries but never receives an answer) næstu nótt fer ég heim (the next night going home) varla tek eftir þeim (barely noticing them) þungu skýjum sem herja á (the heavy clouds which gather above) sjórinn gengur á land (the sea marches to land) skrifa í svartan sand(I write in the dark sand) ljóðin þin og leyndarmálin min (your poems and my secrets) aaaaaahhhhh How´d I do? note förum heim and fer ég heim both mean 'going home' but the first is plural ie. going home together and the second is singular, he´s going home alone.

Ever heard of Old Blind Dogs? Look them up, they're one of my favorites. I do agree with you for the most part though- there needs to be more bands like this.
@Radar-tastic9 жыл бұрын
Its not really the language you need to listen to its it the rhythm of it just like Japanese songs its the rhythm
@SpittingGun9 жыл бұрын
***** I would agree with you on some part- yes, the rhythm is a HUGE part of making the song great. But another part of me loves listening to the different sounds of each language, and how their culture impacts the language they speak as well. I listen to a lot of Scottish Gaelic songs not only based on the rhythm, but the history/culture and language sounds that come with it.

I have incredibly weird but good feelings about this song. It has a real Celtic feel to it and being from Ireland this song reminds me of a good bunch of other songs from there. Emotional, melodic and just beautiful. I dont often comment on songs, but this one brought up such emotion that I had to. It stirs up memories of watching my Dad play guitar and sing when I was a child. Thank you Árstíðir

@@linajurgensen4698 Is that so? Please tell me more :)
@HinaKhan-ou3xc4 жыл бұрын
Thing is, while Grenholmish (Icelandic) culture is Germanic, it's influenced by Irish Celtic culture, since Gaels also settled on the island with the Norsemen.
@ragnarlobrok10112 жыл бұрын
@@HinaKhan-ou3xc True true...I can only speak for myself but I resonate strongly with the Celts and celtic music. Some say Icelanders are more or less 50/50 nordic and celtic if that can be divided cleanly. I feel that is close to the truth.
@KT-ly2tr Жыл бұрын
@@linajurgensen4698 There is a great overlap between ancient celtic and germanic cultures. From their love for nature, their gods, and their art. Not to mention both are sub groups of I.E in linguistics. Meaning they share a common ancestor (which as of today is known as) the Yamnaya. These cultures arose independently of one another but have carried with them similarities that go way back to the early bronze age.

It's a letter used in the Icelandic language, as well as some other languages (Old English etc.) Pronounced like the 'th' in the word 'than'. You can probably find it somewhere in the word character catalogue, or try some keyboard settings.
@lepietbull10 жыл бұрын
Aside from copy and pasting the letter,you can actually write it: Hold 'alt' and type the numbers on your num-pad: alt+0208 (Ð) or alt+0240 (ð).
