I really enjoy these early episodes and cast. Tony, trying to bring it all together for us laymen. Phil, the digger and seeker with the enthusiasm of the eternal child at Christmas. Mick, who passed on in 2013, a more serious foil to Phil. Robin, whom I think brought the episodes to life as he filled and fleshed out the dusty tomes and pieces of bone and pottery into living people in history with such great storytelling ability. The ever optimistic Stewart who seemed to have the most thankless of tasks of hoping those dark and light blotches on paper would reveal real history, and justify his dig location suggestions. And of course, my personal favorite Carenza. She came across as accomplished, smart, inquisitive, friendly and didn't back off from getting her hands dirty in the trenches. Add to that, very cute and attractive. What was not to love about her. Just a great ensemble.

Yes, Josh! The original Time Team crew had a synergy and magic that made the show terrific. Whether by luck or design, they took a topic that many might find "ho-hum" and created a mentally stimulating and thoroughly entertaining program.

what was great about time team was you're not just stuck in some classroom listening to someone drone on about archaeology lol. You're actually seeing it being done, which is how I always thought education should be, texts books are all well and good but the real learning is in the doing, practical stuff, it's like you're there with these interesting personalities being taught this stuff.

I have watched dozens of these on KZbin and I can't get enough. They"re more enjoyable to hang out with in my living room than most of the intense stuff, which I do love, but need breaks from. i.e. King Richard the Lionheart vs.Tiger King. Well gosh ... this second episode just screamed out for the services of Stuart Ainsworth Landscape Archeologist. The final wrap-up would have been a bit more informative as to the reason for and full location of the original defense berm, the Punic ditch, if he could see it from a helicopter and do a walkabout ... Eventually they did get him, and he often unlocked the mystery of an entire area just by looking carefully with his educated and instinctive eye! :) - fan of S.A.

Did my eyes deceive me? At about minute mark 34 when Tony et al are discussing the ditch trench, Tony says "you mean down there where that guy is digging" ... If I'm not mistaken, that's the first showing of Mick the Dig. (I've only watched this series five times over the years and this is my first notice of this tidbit) following on, another year down the road, Mick shows up in the garden early on, on top of a ladder taking photos. Every time I watch these I see something new. :D

The quote at about 12:57 about starvation killing more, was spot on to what the Japanese found out after the US invaded Guadalcanal, in 1942. The Japanese soldiers were trapped with little or no food, and those that survived were so emaciated that they were of little use once rescued. Also they abandon any that were so weak they couldn't walk...

The archeologist is right about road shapes. Forest paths too, often have small bends around phantom tree trunks of long-rotted-away trees, but if one digs, there are still linear discolorations.

Kinda sad that they absolutely ignored that it's Sarmatian cavalry that was stationed there. Yep, horse-riding nomadic(but fierce) people of the Russian steppes. And this stone fort, that could've held no more than 500 of 5500 sent by Marcus Aurelious, is the only archaeological evidence for them ever being on the British soil. Also, everyone should absoultely check cool and simultaneously creepy cavalry helmet that was found there. Called "Ribchester helmet" not surprisingly. It was found near a river bed by a local boy, son of a clogmaker. Kinda parallels this bit with "amphora boy" in the episode.

I like the Punic ditch. But when it was introduced, it was a slippery slope going into a vertical wall. At the end it looked like a vertical drop going into a slippery slope. I am left wondering which it was and whether it had anything to do with Carthage.

I can see why Mick Aston left the programme complaining that it had been dumbed down. These earlier programmes are more TEAM and less TONY. They have more of the specialists talking directly to camera and less of the glitzy ra ra of Tony and his facilitation of facts and history. A more gentle and scholarly approach.

Mick didn’t leave because of Tony. Tony wasn’t part of the ‘dumbing down’, and the biggest issue was production being moved to Wales and half of the team being fired without the network even talking to him about it.

It’s interesting to me how they refer to the native tribe, the Briganti?, as the “bad guys” who stood in the way of Roman conquest and illustrates that idea that history is written by the hand that holds the pen. We have the same attitude towards the native tribes who resisted the “Manifest Destiny” we hold as noble and right here in America as we “created civilization” in an area held by who we consider savages.

What I don't get: somehow a teacher writes in to a program that airs as Series 1, Episode 2 ... it's only been around for one show, and with the time it takes to shoot, the show should have been out for at least a season before someone's outside letter would be considered and scheduled.

Time Team is essentially produced like a movie. Only the actors are actual archaeologists (except Tony) but everything is scripted of course. Look how seamless a casual conversation flows from one camera angle to another. First cameraman should have been visible in the next, overview shot but since we see no cameraman, they did multiple takes of course etc. etc. What I'm saying is, it's presented like 'bla bla bla I found this in my garden' when in reality, Mick Aston would preview specific sites in advance, get the required specialists hired, etc. But it wouldn't look so 'casual' and 'spontaneous' if they showed how the series was actually produced. Bottom line: the series was intended to make the public interested, enthusiastic even, about archaeology and history and they succeeded.

I like these older episodes as there seems to be a bit more originality to them. I like the idea of people writing in and asking for Time Team to investigate, yes there is a polish and smoothness to the later episodes, but in the late years I see too much Hollywood shtick and flash. Though as the years go by Tony seems to mellow out and be much more likeable....not a hotdog as in the early shows.
