i love the way roger reads, he doesn't act like he's running a reading race on speed.

Well, because he described a person of color as a ``colored person?'' And said she was unkempt? What about the description of the fat woman? Did that offend you, too? (I am only a little more than halfway through at 6 hours, 21 minutes.) What about the sexist remarks that a room was dainty, as befitted a ``lady?'' I suppose you find Mark Twain's works objectionable. They're only in the voice of the times; everyone understands this; it's not furthering prejudice in the world. I don't think I've ever adopted a prejudice based upon a novel? (Although, maybe in the case of historic Russia, the picture of the peasants/lords relationships from reading Gogol, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, I have images of those people that remain undisputed, since I can't time travel.) Edited to add: oh, just encountered the ``southern darkies'' being the best cooks reference. Well, I still think that's just how they talked back then (this was written in 1922.) Would you rather they pretended history didn't happen?

The slowly read of this is so so soooo agonizing that it makes my nerves twitch. Once i increased the speed to x1.25 all is well. As for the story its traditional for the times. Not awful.not wondrous. Just pleasant e'nuff for this cold oct day in rainy Chicago. Yep. M. Il.

@@lilybassiri8866 There's a halfway-house between execrable and very fast, you know! The main problem with this read is that's it's far too _evenly_ paced. There's no variety in pacing at all, which is vital to illustrate change in mood and dynamic shifts, as well as maintain the listener's interest. _Tonally,_ he has a good voice; dramatically, it needs work!

@@221b-Maker-Street tonally - it has no colour, needs to sharpen the cords if you were asking me but as you aren't asking, I can get used to it! Everyone is blessed with a different voice. This subject is actually quite interesting - why do we have different voices; why a mother can recognise her newborn baby's cry from hundreds of crying babies? Maybe there's a research paper on this subject? I'll look it up later. Hmmmm Thank you. 🤔🗣

A classic mystery/detective story in the Sherlock Holmes tradition, the hidden room suggested by the title of this book does not remain a mystery for very long as the book progresses. Written in the first person, the husband of his (Carlton Davies) former lover is found dead one night at the stroke of midnight, and Davies finds his ex-lover standing over the dead body immediately after the shot was fired, with a gun in her hand. It was no secret that she never truly loved her husband, who had blackmailed her into marrying him. The jury ships Ruth to prison, and the stage is set for Davies to locate the right detective for the case, and for a series of events with twists and turns and surprises that will keep the reader guessing who was responsible for this murder. (Summary by Roger Melin)

Since the moment the shot was heard and the body found, I'd been waiting anxiously for the former fiance to look for the incriminating letter. The fact that he didn't and wasn't man enough to prevent his fiancee from marrying a scoundrel made this story incredibly pathetic so at the 38th minute I stopped listening.

Omg! You all must be deaf toned. Roger is a very horrible performer. He presents no suspense, no direction and basically no emotions at all. Best performer is Scott Bricks, too bad he doesn't perform all audiobooks. I can't believe they actually pay Roger to ruin the readings.
@MimMim-hs2rs5 жыл бұрын
Not tone deaf at all, to each his own, I respect your opinion but why do you have the right to impose your opinion on others? Some people like McDonald's others prefer Burger King, some people like Chinese food and others prefer Italian, doesn't make it wrong nor right, it's simply a matter of preference and that's okay, unless of course one is an opinionated control freak and I say that respectfully, just an opinion.
