I love how over this series of nuzlock review reviewing, you can see distinct differences in play styles between Jan and Dan; where Jan goes for a very objective and mathematical approach with these philosophies and formulas backing every decision he makes, Dan sometimes just goes “fuck it, we ball” if he ever sees the opportunity for an absolutely anxiety inducing moment that’s gonna make viewers want to strangle him with their bare hands for leaving the most deadly situation up to luck - and he always gets out alive, because he always does. It’s such a great harmony content wise, because we get to see Dan’s theatrical escapes from death and intense plays, and then get Jan’s hindsight of every single way it could have gone wrong if it were anyone but Dan playing the way he does. Any time Dan starts a nuzlock, I get hyped for the review review that comes after

I respect Jan for providing tips to his audience on how to get better at their own Nuzlockes, but I'm starting to agree with RT on this a bit. Especially if you're a content creator, you cant be expected to go for the mathematically perfect run where you make every correct decision. The original Nuzlocke comic was made to tell an entertaining story, not play the game perfectly. Since Nuzlockes are on the easier end of challenges most of the time, knowing "how the sausage is made" so to speak kind of ruins some of the magic of them. Going in with good, but not perfect understanding like RT has makes the runs tense and exciting.

I think the difference is fundamentally in their content styles, because for RT's audience the most entertainment comes from those really tense situations, but for the people watching Jan's videos (me lol) the entertainment comes from being a huge nerd and hearing the mathematically perfect alternatives. so of course there's gonna be a bit of dissonance when RT reacts to jan's content, it's intended for two different types of people

Agreed! That's why I'm glad Jan makes it less about educating the person actually doing the run and rather directs his lessons towards the audience who might make the same plays.

Well this is why it varies from what you're trying to do. You see Jan plays challenges that are actually much harder and he basically has to play like that to survive. So that's what his viewers are subscribed for. So in a very real sense, Jan's like that for content just as much as RT is casual for content; the excitement in Jan's videos comes from the magnitude of the difficulty. Of course when he does this react content it kind of looks like he's trying to push that onto others, but that said, we all know he only makes the react videos because they get lots of clicks. Really they're the same, just chasing the YT algorithm like anyone else. It's our choice as viewers what we're more entertained by.

@@VixYW Easy to grind and even easier to accidentally overlevel, making the game less challenging. On top of that, XY introduced the awful Affection mechanic that makes your team just broken (even worse from Gen 8 onwards, since they combined it with Friendship). And sure, you can completely avoid that whole mess, but only if you know about it in the first place.

Jan definitely does seem to believe that "a win's a win" as long as it doesn't break one of the rules you set at the start of the run. If you're playing with items, he'll say it's a smart move to stall for 80 turns using Max Potions and X Attacks because it's not against the rules, but maybe consider banning item use on your next run.

I think the "but we love Jolteon" moment is why I don't really vibe with these kinds of "critical analysis" approaches that treat it like a cold, calculated competitive scene. The entire point of Nuzlockes to me is not just the challenge, but the attachment and story you organically create through clutch or funny moments.

@@oopsausername4111 You're right, I don't like death fodder logic. It goes against the spirit of a Nuzlocke. Unfortunately it's really hard to find people unwilling to do that. Marriland is the only Nuzlocker who doesn't, and it really pays off with some underused mons getting the spotlight. It's happened in mine too. I've had a hero Stantler, Vivillon, and Volbeat, to name a few.

For people curious why Haxorus used earthquake over dragon claw. AI has its own "battle simulator" for each of its moves. Sometimes it can roll crit against these moves. In the instance against Iris it rolled non crit dragon claw and crit earthquake so it saw earthquake killing Samurott. This is also why it is common that an AI will choose moves like night slash as the "battle simulator" will more likely roll crit rolls seeing that move as higher damage output then a higher base power move.

...Have you ever watched a nuzlocke review. He never really roasts them that much (except for Alpharad and they ended up friends) It's a bit of a smug persona but also just genuine advice that's mainly for people watching which seems way more the intention than trying to get clout from roasting big youtubers.
