Do you prefer rubber or silicone for tattoo practice?
In this video I wanted to take some time to touch base on the rubber vs silicone based tattoo practice skins.
For tattooist I professionally feel that the silicone based practice skins are the way to go simply because they clean up nice and the application upon applying the tattoo translates the information learned fairly well to human skin.
The rubber based skins I feel would be better for maybe micro blading, or permanent cosmetics. The clean up on the rubber felt skins is tedious and harder to work with but none the less, the rubber based skins can still be used to practice tattooing.
The silicone based skins clean up nice, accept the ink well, and the silicone based skins also accept shading very well. I like that the silicone based skins will also show when you go too deep into the skin which is something that has helped me learn where to put the ink upon tattooing real skin.
I will go ahead and link you to the practice skins below.

91% isopropyl alcohol works pretty well for cleaning the smudged ink off the surface of the practice skins. Just wipe a little vaseline onto it afterwards to keep it from drying the material.

Thanks for the vid On the fake rubber skin, I am using Vaseline. It cleans the ink after tattooing. It's hard to clean, but it does the job. And just today, I got my first silicone fake skin, but I can't get the ink in very well. I am going a bit deeper to get the ink right. Do you have any ideas for that? I appreciate your response.

Petroleum. Jelly or Vaseline for the rubber one works just fine. But the rubber to me is a lot harder to get greater detail into. You’re better off using silicone because if your trying to get used to human skin- the way to get a decent tat on the rubber would absolutely tear up human skin…bad… I have them and most of my finished pieces are literally warped and cut up bad from trying to get ink in at proper saturation. Honestly never buying rubber again. Too far off from human skin. If it’s what you can afford go for it but understand it’s not helping you save ink or needles. It just tears the needles up and wastes ink. Vaseline like I said WILL keep it clean. Apply a thin amount before starting and wipe as you go. It’s going to eat up alot of Vaseline but it will clean off Fs.

Completely agree, rubber skin doesn't pack ink well and also it doesn't look as good as silicone one.

would you recommend spending more money for you first gun than buying an amazon gun then a good gun? Like would you rather spend around 400$ for your first gun rather than spending the 100 for a decent gun on amazon? And what gun are you using what is your favorites?

Great question! From my personal experience yes! When we practice on practice skin and develop our skillsets they do translate fairly well on human skin. You will be much much better practicing on fake skin and going to human after one has invested a goood amount of time into practicing. You wont regret practicing on fake skins.

How do you keep the ink from smudging so well? I got the silicone skin and use so many paper towels. Should I let the ink dry on the skin before I wipe with A&D or should I place A&D on the practice skin before doing a line then wipe immediately? Does it depend on the depth? Thanks!
@csteingraber
@csteingraber 3 жыл бұрын
I just started practicing on the silicone skin and I realized that the easiest way to help prevent smudging is keep a very thin layer of petroleum jelly across everything. I put it from edge to edge and on whole stencil. And add more before each wipe. Swirl it around on the ink and it kind of dissolves the surface ink a little and picks it up then wipes way easier. Basically i make sure the thin layer of petroleum jelly is always there so any surface ink will end up on top of it kind of. It protects the stencil too but just dont rub it hard when spreading over stencil just kind of slide it so it’s thin or it will gunk on needle if too thick.

Dab instead of wipe whenever possible. And as the user above said, use an ointment or Vaseline to create a thin barrier between the ink and fake skin. Here’s my workflow: 1. apply my stencil and let it dry completely 2. apply very thin layer of ointment or Vaseline to the general area that I’m working at the time(including the bare “skin”) lay in some ink 3. dab with dry or damp paper towel while not smudging 4. apply another thin layer to that area if needed which if you’re being gentle and precise you won’t have to reapply another layer every time you dab Good thing about fake skins being easy to stain is that they force you to make good habits that keep your stencil neat and clean. When I started I was getting ink every damn where but now that I’ve built good habits I do clean work on even the worst skins. Hope this helped.

Hmmmm who am I to say no? The idea has definitely crossed my mind but I am always tattooing or developing software so I don’t branch off and do that. I think with the correct knowledge and research you would be able to achieve some tattoo-able skins.

If u use cornstarch and add to clear silicone until it becomes a soft playdough feel. Like 1:1 ratio. Then add concealer make up to dye it a skin color u like. Use a pin roller to make it to whatever thickness desiref
