I have a transparent version of that old 2x2 with the same mechanism (i think it was called the "rubik's ice cube" or something) it has a hidden screw underneath a sticker, so it's actually possible to assemble without bending the plastic

I have a 2x2 similar to this one complete with the same label, worn a bit to the point where red and orange have become the same color, only difference being it doesn't pop, it's just stiff as all hell and will lock up a million times and will require all your hand strength at once just to do 45° worth of a turn. Thank god I got a modern stickerless.

I so feel you with cube explosions. I had it happen once with a 4x4 that had tiles on it instead of stickers and moved faster than any 4x4 I have had before and after that. I was in the middle of a solve, I think I was on the last layer and it suddenly just fell apart into pieces and I couldn't figure out how to reassemble the 4x4 and neither could my dad, so it ended up being thrown into the trash in a ziplock bag. And my non-Rubik's 4x4 that I still have, it regularly has 1 back piece pop off, again on the last layer, usually as a result of a slight misalignment. It's frustrating when I have to reassemble in the middle of solving the cube.
