Excellent video sir. Your videos on this rifle help me to decide to buy one a few years ago. Unfortunately I traded it in for a different firearm and I've regretted that decision ever since. I am so glad that Ruger decided to bring them back into production because health constraints warrant me using a lightweight rifle. I have a Ruger American 22wmr which I absolutely love but I need something with more power behind it so I think I will be getting one of these again in the near future plus either a GP100 or Blackhawk 357 to match. I agree about the magazine issue and I hope they will revise how it is made. I personally didn't have any other issue to bring up than that so I'm looking to bring this rifle back into the homestead. Thanks again for your review.

I agree. It's a $400.00 rifle that Ruger tacked another $500 on for their $989 MSRP. Now if it was in 9x23 and used hi-cap magazines similar to the Destroyer carbines it'd STILL be worth only $450.00 max. I got 1 of my grand-daughters a used Henry in .357 & think I'll just get for myself. Screw the 77/357. Ruger used to be the manufacturer for the working/common man and I have 5 that were really inexpensive new. Not anymore, they've forgotten their roots/lost their way. Even the 'street price' for this rifle is too much.

U do get some good velocity gains out of an 18.5" or 20" bbl. Bought a Marlin 1894 357 new in 2002. Initial shooting session at the range, i was getting just over 2100 fps consistently with factory 125's (Rem or maybe Federal). My friend and chrono owner opined that would be a nice coyote round. About 5 yrs later i created the concept of the "Hillbilly Patrol Rifle" by adding a Weaver V3 1-3x scope. (it previously had a Williams peep sight, which worked well). Scope is great- huge exit pupil, so your eye lines up easily, nice wide field of view. On 1.5x, u can see the front sight through the scope. The other option was a Burris 1.5-5x, which went onto a Savage 99 308. I liked the option of a true 1x being available for close range or quick reaction shooting. Keeping in mind that your effective range is probably 150 yds due to trajectory and bullet shape, the V3 is enough magnification. With a red dot sight, it would be a fearsome home defense carbine. That or the V3 would work well on pigs too. And being left handed, i have a strong affinity for lever guns.

I heard that you are loading a hard cast l80 grain bullet in your rifle. I would suggest you use a bullet of lesser sectional density that will mate better with the rifling of your barrel. Because of the added length of the 180 gr. bullet your rifling may not be stabilizing it. Try a l40 gr. bullet. My M77 loves its 140 gr. bullet and shoots them quite well. I would also suggest a lower power scope. If you like your 3x9 fine but I think you might bring your groups in tighter with just the 3 power. I have hunted and used .357 in both pistol and rifle for many years. I have taken three elk with my rifle because within that 100 yards I can always call my shot, ie. head shot.

It's my suspicion the lack of tight groups is due to somewhat less precise quality control with pistol cases vs. typical rifle cases. Lots of things factor into accuracy with pistol cases: Case mouth concentricity Case mouth tension Bullet quality (cast lead, vs jacketed, vs monolithic) Powder load weight consistency OAL loaded cartridge length OAL case length consistency Rifle chamber could play a role in how accurate it gets as well. Playing with cartridge OAL and bullet jump to rifle lands might tighten things up as well. I bet many more of these issues are usually sorted out with rifle cartridges and less so with typical rimmed revolver cartridges. I bet someone who handloads and selected consistent brass, bullets, and worked on chamber specifics could tighten those groups up to at least 1.5" or less at 100 yd.

The .357’s ballistics compares to a .30-30 North American hunting cartridge. (Let’s stop thinking pistol vs rifle ok? With Remington 125-grain JHPs the .357 revolver got 1442 fps but a carbine got 2038 fps (!) The .30-30 ammo 150-grain JSP: 2284 fps. Is it a surprise that an 18″ carbine delivers substantially higher velocities than a 4″ revolver firing the same cartridge. If you are hunting or hiking anywhere in the Appalachian chain, the Ohio R. Valley, the woodlands (MN, MI, WI or IL, IN, OH, IA, MO, AR,TN) you don’t need 2700 fps (flatter). You don’t need 500 yards. You need to ZERO in on your average range (add Kentucky windage) .
@DimaProk8 жыл бұрын
Why surprised? it's most basic understanding - longer barrels produce faster velocity because more powder is allowed to burn.
@Gitfidlpickr8 жыл бұрын
+Dima Prok I'm not surprised (are you?) My point is that a cartridge can be fired from pistol, rifle, bolt action, semi and performance will vary. 1800 to 2000 fps beats anything carried by Lewis & Clark or even Custer and yet they got their job done.
@DimaProk8 жыл бұрын
+Gitfidlpickr Ok, I misread your sentence. I think you meant to put question mark at the end of "same cartridge". P.S. I am certain Lewis and Clark had much heavier "bullets", it's not just velocity that matters. An arrow going 300 fps is deadlier than a bullet going 2000 fps.

I have to use a slow burning powder to be able to use the same ammo in both pistol and rifle. When I first started loading for the rifle I had to keep the ammo separate because the rifle ammo was to hot for my pistols. With a slower burning powder like 2400 or blue dot I get the max from the rifle and can still use it in the handguns. There is a lot of fire that comes out of the handgun though. Even with factory ammo you will see a pretty good increase of velocity from the longer barrel of the rifle.

They come with 16", 20" or 24" barrels (some round, some octagon shaped - 24" wouldn't be considered a carbine). Some can have scopes, but most are intended to be used with open sights. Then, there's the fun factor. Lever guns are just plain awesome and are a ton of fun to shoot. More so than a bolt gun anyway. Just my 2 cents......

I see Ruger kept the push button mag release for that gun, unlike the piece of crap little " lever " mag release they put on the 10/22 instead of keeping the button release !!!

What kind of problems did you have? I bought one of the "re -- release" rifles and mine is flawless. I enjoy a bolt rifle and re - loading straight walled cases is so much easier and faster than bottle neck cartridges. I am so happy with mine!

That was totally a 308. 30-30 can't use pointed bullets because of tubular magazines
@russellkeeling97123 жыл бұрын
Sure they can. Not every 30-30 is a lever gun. The thing that holds a 30-30 back is the thin wall of its case.
@seanduncan333 жыл бұрын
I was saying pointed bullets don’t work in tubular magazines because they puncture the primer of the round in front of them under recoil. Hornady fxt is the exception to that. The lever actions that shoot pointed bullets use a traditional magazine instead of tubular because of this

can someone tell me about some guns like this that are cheaper I live in Indiana and want to use it for deer im looking to spend about $600
@TheGearTester10 жыл бұрын
You can purchase a 77/357 for around 650-700. I don't think that any other company is producing a .357 magnum bolt action rifle currently. You could also look into a Marlin .357 magnum lever action rifle too.

True Mark, where the 357 in an 18" barrel it has next to no recoil and the report is like a 22 LR / 22 Mag. Which is what I was looking for. Neither of my daughters are fans of recoil or loud reports. One day I have hopes that they will upgrade to their grandfather's 30-30 for hunting. Till then the 357 magnum carbine will do 😉 Cheers

you say "i have done a lot of shooting with this gun 500 rounds" 500 rounds is nothing IMO..my 223 is 3 years old and its seen 20,000 rounds through its barrel and i call that "a lot of shooting".you also state same ballistics as a 3030 ???...dream on buddy...!!! i did have one of these but sold it cause the bloody thing would not cycle after the 2nd round ..wake up ruger.
@DimaProk8 жыл бұрын
+tap water You shot 20k rounds through the same barrel??? The barrel is rated for 5k rounds and military grade barrels around 7.5k I believe. Are you just blasting dirt to see how fast you can pull the trigger? 20,000 rounds even at conservative 40 cents a piece, that's 8,000 dollars in ammo! I agree that 500 rounds is not a lot but it's a bolt gun and that's makes a huge difference, especially when you're shooting targets and waiting for your barrel to cool.
@PINYAPTLOCALSEARCHSCAN8 жыл бұрын
+Dima Prok do the math...150 to 200 rounds most weekends at my range for the last 3 years is ????.. (HINT...150x52x3=?)..whats the most expensive part of shooting ??? any idea? ill tell you,its the case...and i get 15 to 25 loads per brass case and i don't know where you get 40 cents a piece from ??? ever heard of "re loading" ?? my loads are doing 1500 fps and my max is 2000fps using cast wheel weights with gas checks in place plus alox beewax mixture of bullet lube,which gives me very little barrel leading but easy to clean out using CHORE BOY copper wrapped around a cleaning rod tip... at these speeds if a 223 stainless barrel cant take many many thousands of rounds i give up gunning.
@DimaProk8 жыл бұрын
+tap water I don't know what happened to my reply from a smart phone. I do reload but since you didn't mention it I just calculated factory rounds cost. Brass for me is actually lowest cost - free. I collected thousands of .223 shells, most have not even been loaded once and If I ever need more I made friends with 1 brass collectors I buy brass $1/lb, I just tell her to separate .223 for me. Last time I went out I collected 20 lb! of .223, .308 and some pistol brass. I prefer to go to go shooting wild. It's a long drive 1:45 hours but outdoor range in my area cost about $20, it's not worth it with all the rules and restrictions. Because it's the whole day event for me I can't go as much as I want, got family too. But the place I go to it's surrounded by sand walls like a quarry, it's huge and safe, I call it "gun pit" in fact it's a lot better / safer than the outdoor range we have in the city. I don't know how you find time to cast and reload unless you got progressive press. I reload for accuracy so each round powder is measured to a hundred of grain. I dump the bulk weight from RCBS thrower and then use my electric home made trickler OMEGA style I made myself that cost me few dollars in parts from Home Depot :-) works really well.

+tap water Certain powders like 4198 require case to be filled to 95% for optimal performance. If you have too much empty space it doesn't burn well. If you're shooting only 1500-2000 fps, you might as well shoot 22 hornet. Brass is more rare though. How's accuracy with cast lead? I think if you add gas check it just doesn't make sense to cast from saving $$ point. I buy bullets 7-8 cents a piece and I can shoot them at full velocity and no need to cast, gas check, lube, etc. Where do you get wheel lead and how much does it cost? I was thinking of casting .357 maybe.
@PINYAPTLOCALSEARCHSCAN8 жыл бұрын
+Dima Prok ill answer all your questions..i use UNIQUE powder and a bacron filler so empty space in case is not an issue. why i use a 223 when i can buy a hornet rifle for the speeds i use ?? because cases are cheaper and plenty available and if i go hunting i have the option of using my 223 at full power using HP bullets.(around 3600fps) my cast bullets are very accurate.100 yards into a 1.1/2" circle which is good enough for me. i make my own gas checks so cost is "0". my mate is a tire fitter so my cost for wheel weights is "0"..and i can get half a 20 liter metal bucket at a time of the stuff or it would end up at the tip.wheel weights for me are perfect hardness when bullet making.it has the right amounts of antimony,tin and lead for good hard cast bullets.plus when casting i drop them straight from the bullet mold into chilled water bucket for extra hardness. my press is an rcbs 4 stage,very fast and loads accurate ammo.

I just cant see it. A bolt gun in 357 Mag and coming in at 750 bucks in 2019. Na....Ill stick with my Marlin 1894. Its really stuff like this, that makes me wonder what the fuck ruger is doing sometimes. Now I would have loved to see a Mini 14 chambered in 357 mag. I would have been all over that.
