I think the safety feature, the ar mag and the affordability will make this my next gun
@TheGearTester5 ай бұрын
I think that would be a great decision. They offer it in .308 using a different style of magazine. I would go with the 30 cal option if you plan on using it for hunting anything larger than deer on a regular basis.

The features and variety of cartridges make the American an instant great choice. The 3-position safety and improved feel of the action made me go for the Gen 2. That being said, I do still prefer the position of the M77 safety. That could just be a matter of familiarity , though. Nice, thorough review....kinda reminds me of TNP. Subbed. :)

If you like that style scope, check out the new banshee 2x10x30 in either 1st or 2nd focal planes. Glass is surprisingly clear & holds zero very well and only cost a lil over $100 & comes with pretty good 30mm mount, caps & has illuminated center reticle with bdc hash marks. I was pleasantly surprised. Especially at that price point. It's light weight, clear & works well on my 350 legend build. Eye relief is generous, too...and I believe it comes in black or fde & even had 2 batteries with it. Sweet lil setup...

I have a new Ruger American II in 6.5 Grendel. With factory ammo I did between 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch at 100 yards. Seems to like the Horn SST. A great rifle for the ca$h. Only about 100 rounds so far so I’m expecting it to get even better.

I'm glad I spent my hard earned money on this as well. I have the Gen2 "ranch" version. Not sure if they officially went with the ranch nomenclature yet - 308 caliber with 16+ inch barrel. This rifle handles and shoots well above its price point, and it's Cerkote! That's excellent value because my rifles get into lots of humidity and rain and are exposed to dirt and muck.

A bolt action rifle in 5.56 makes a lot of sense. Being able to shoot both 5.56 and .223 spec ammo is really nice. Also, bolt action rifles are much more comfortable to shoot suppressed. Feeding from ar15 magazines is really nice. Just carry extra magazines, no need to single feed rounds into the chamber. 5.56mm/223 ammo is pretty plentiful, and has a variety of different loadings for different applications. There are so many advantages to this chambering, in this rifle. I will get one of the gen II rugers, but I haven't decided on a caliber yet. I'll probably get this model also. It is just a great, utilitarian, paring.

I am a huge fan of the 3 position safety. I don't walk around with a round in the chamber. I want to keep the action closed to keep debris out of the chamber and action. I have not dropped tested any ruger americans, and I don't know specifically if they are drop safe, I just prefer to keep the chamber of my bolt action rifles empty until I need to shoot.

You can put a three position safety on a Mauser action, but it is not standard, it is an aftermarket modification. The three position safety was made famous by the Winchester Model 70, that is a modified Mauser action. After Remington 700s were involved in a few fatal accidents, the three position safety has become more common. The rear position acting as your standard safety that locks the action. A safety that allows loading and unloading, and standard forward fire. After the lawsuits Remington went through the industry is quickly moving to any system that lets you load and unload on safe.

I have one and was very disappointed at first, I tried five different factory loads and three handloads, accuracy was horrible two to 4 inch groups. I was at local shop and saw some Norma Golden Target Match 69 BTHP ammo and I bought a box. I went to range and first three shots were a ragged hole under 1/2 inch, wow.....I then ordered 200 rounds of that ammo.
@shinyribs217816 күн бұрын
That's interesting. Do you think it was the ammo or the caliber? Mine is 7.62x39 and it shoots consistent clover leafs at 100 yds no matter what the ammo is.
@lrlapua803516 күн бұрын
@@shinyribs2178 I have a Gen 1 7.62x39 and it shoots everything really good, not sure why Gen 2 is so picky, I also have a Gen 2 22ARC and it only shoots factory 62 grain under an inch the heavier Hornady ammo shoots at most 2 inch. I am going to handload for it so we will see how it does.

Do they come with iron sights ?
@TheGearTester5 ай бұрын
Great question! Currently Ruger does not produce any rifles in the Ruger American Line that have iron sights. The Ruger Gunsite Scout is their only bolt action that comes equipped with iron sights from the factory. I hope they will begin producing a version of this rifle with iron sights and an extended optics base similar to the one that is on the new production Marlin lever action rifles.
@MacGWA5 ай бұрын
It’s a crying shame! I wished they would put some kind of irons on this gun!
@Mr.Ut215 ай бұрын
No, but they can easily and cheaply be added. 99% of shooters dont even want them, except for the 1% that REALLY wamt them. But adding irons to a bolt gun is not a very difficult thing to do.
@TheGearTester5 ай бұрын
@@Mr.Ut21 Please define what adding iron sights to a gun “cheaply” would cost… I assume you mean that it would be affordable. Iron sights on a working rifle should be heavy encouragement. Most people have no idea what they need or want. 99% of people only want what they see on instagram/social media. Not trying to be overly aggressive. Just wanted to engage in a spirited discussion!
