There's a lot going for it: 1. A revolver is more reliable for .22LR 2. Controllable for a v. small pistol 3. Zero chance of limp-wrist malfunction. 4. Controllable shooting one-handed (a possibility in a self-defense situation). 5. Super cheap ammo for practice. 6. Simplicity of a revolver.

I got one for my sister. She has a nerve condition almost like arthritus, but it really hampers her ability to shoot. Forget a semi-auto. Even the 380 EZ that Smith came out with she cannot rack the slide. This was her only choice. I got her the Ruger LCR in 22 magnum. She got her CCP and it lives with her. So consider this if you are physically challenged in any way. Trust me, it's better to confront an intruder with any gun rather than a sharpened spatula.

@@precisionrodentcontrol_PRC That was the only issue. The LCR has a huge, hard trigger pull. When she first tried it I was worried she couldn't do it. After some different gripping techniques she was able to crack off a box of 50. But that was it. But in a real life scenario, her adrenaline will give her the extra strength to rapid fire probably faster than a real autoloader! lol

J. Leage I managed to cut a tendon in my trigger finger years ago& can't pull many DA triggers but I've had no trouble with the .22mag or .38spl LCR triggers at all. They've had no trigger work done. I'm surprised anyone would find them difficult at all. I consider them the best, at least certainly for me.

My wife's .22 LCR is with her at all times, she practices with it a lot...it's a much better self defense weapon than any high capacity semi auto with really cool designer bullets gathering dust in a drawer at home.

Capacity ? Last weekend a midnight chicago street party emptied out in 30 seconds when someone fired a round. A round. No one stood there and wondered the caliber or drew his gun ready for a gun fight.

Exactly. I tell people concerned of larger calibers (mainly newer shooters either due to recoil or cost) and asking about a 22lr… the 22lr lacks the stopping power but a well placed shot cans get the job done. That and when bullets start flying and it’s no longer a soft target… the attacker isn’t thinking about what caliber is coming their way.

I've carried for many years. Mostly large frame autos when I was younger. But as I've aged, my normal carry most days anymore is 2 S&W 642- 38 revolvers. I figure grabbing a fresh revolver is much faster than reloading. And as a final back up, I usually carry a NAA 22 LR mini revolver. I was raised on a small farm in the 70"s. We butchered hogs and beef to put in the several freezers we had. I used 22LR and 22 shorts, fired from rifles mainly to put the animals down. But at times I used various 22 handguns to do the task. I can assure everyone reading this comment, the 22LR and 22shorts had no problem dropping them instantly. The little 22 round is much more deadly than many think.

When I was 18 I was shot in my upper arm by a .22lr. If I had been an aggressor rather than a victim I would have gone away very quickly. The bullet shattered my humerus in 2 places at a distance of about 8 yards. My surgeon explained to me about the damaged it could have caused at other contact points....collapsed lung etc. I am now 71 and my arm still aches like hell in the cold. Bring on the sharp sticks.

Actually found out about the S&W 43C on another venue about a week ago and I was so impressed, I bought one. Federal Punch 22LR shot accuracy in the 43C was impressive and ballistic gel results were also impressive. My wife is recoil sensitive and the light weight was another plus. As Jeff Cooper once said "A pistol beats NO pistol" and it also beats just "harsh words" if that's all you have. CCI also has 22LR hollow point Varmit load which might make a good carry load. Been watching you Hickok for years.

I got my 43c from my local outfitter, it was a pretty penny. It shaved and spit lead badly and the trigger stuck to the rear a couple of times. I figured I'd just learn to live with it, thinking it would break-in eventually. I mentioned this to a friend of mine and he suggested I send it back to S&W and have it examined. So I sent it back, it was returned having had the forcing cone cut, a repaired extractor, they repaired the yoke and also repaired the hand. It took about 6 weeks to get it back. This little revolver is unbelievably light, but the overall exspence for me was high. If I were to do it again, I'd go with the Ruger.

Great video. Another consideration is how loud .22 LR is vs .38 spl. Obviously it's better to be alive and have bad hearing than dead with no hearing, but self defense scenarios often mean you won't have any ear pro. Tinnitus is no joke and for people who already have it and/or sensitive ears, 22 LR might be a good option to consider there, on top of the weight, low recoil, etc. A .22 LR is better than no gun!

My EDC is a .38 LCR, very happy with it. I noticed the first comment you had is the size of the LCR grip. I've found also that the Hogue grip keeps it a little less pocket sized, but I did find an aftermarket Hogue that fits a larger hand, but still doesn't take up much more room than the stock Hogue.

Great comparison. Tried out both at the range, liked them both. Ended up getting the 43C equivalent - in 22 Magnum(Model 351 C 22 WMR - 7 Rounds). I bit more kick than the 43C.....but perfect for self-defense...."better than a stick!". Indeed - or the 2-ounce pepper spray trinket I can legally carry in the Republic of Kali.

I really appreciate your reviewing these and previously the .Ruger LCR 22 WMR and providing an unbiased assessment, recognizing these guns ARE the right choice for many people. I have crippled hands and wrists and my LCR .22 WMR has been perfect for me all around. And it is only for close range defense, so I agree a laughing attacker with a .22 LR or WMR hollow point in their chest at close range is not going to continue to laugh.

I had that type of Ruger in 38+. It came with a holster that I could put in my back pocket. I traded it in for the 3 inch barrel 38. Still has a great grip and Ruger makes a carry bag for it. Ruger small revolvers are so light I have carried them where I was not suppossed to having forgotten I had it. Thanks for the good video. I also have to say that the first dead man I saw was killed by his wife with a 22lr directly in the heart. One shot=DRT! Guess where you hit them with a bullet really does matter.

Taurus just came out with an all new 942 revolver available in 22 LR & 22 WMR, 8 round cylinder in alloy or all Steele, blued or stainless, 2” or 3” barrels with MSRP in the 350 range that looks very promising, yes I know Taurus is not on the same level of Smith or Ruger, but i own quite a few Ruger revolvers & have over the years that I personally have had very good success with them, they have been making revolvers for many decades & I believe they even were affiliated with Smith & Wesson at one time like back in the 70’s & 80’s, like a corporate connection & I think they were sharing information or some designs etc. Thanks Mr. Hickok for all the great content you provide sir, hey maybe a video comparison of various 22 revolvers.

I'm picking the LCR over the Smith. I'm running the LCR in 357 mag. the oversized grip is what will give you the advantage when shooting. I prefer a soft holster. My choice is the "sticky". I just shove it down behind my belt buckle. The LCR and "sticky" holster is the best combination I've seen in a long time. I really like your videos.

Many years ago, a friend of mine was shot at close range with a .22LR in the abdomen. He lived to say that it knocked him down as if he had been hit by a truck. The impact knocked him down instantly and there was nothing he could do but lay there in pain, waiting for help. This guy was about 5'10" and 180 lbs and fit. So I am here to tell you that a little squeaky .22 can and will take down a fully grown man and immobilize him. Anyway, when Wayne was released from the hospital, he had a plastic bag attached to his side and we could all tell when he had to go to the bathroom... phew!

Got my first revolver after watching season 5 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. After trying a few lightweight S&W, Ruger, and Taurus revolvers, I went with the LCR and a absolutely love it. Almost went with a heavier S&W 640 or the LCR that could shoot 357 magnum, but it was too expensive and I'd rather spend that money on a larger revolver that could shoot those rounds more comfortably. The LCR is lightweight with a smooth trigger. On days where I don't want to carry my Beretta APX Centurion, the LCR is a great alternative. I sometimes forget I have it with me. These 22LR revolver variants are so fun to shoot. There isn't much (if any) recoil even with a small J frame size revolver. My daughter loves shooting those at the range and for some reason she likes pushing out the empty casing and reloading the revolver manually over putting in a new clip on a semi auto. After watching this video, I've decided to get the S&W 43C so I don't have to keep renting a 22LR revolver every time I go out to the range. Should be a fun one to own and to shoot with 22LR being much cheaper than 38 special +P. Thanks Hickok!

I bought my wife the LCR-X in .38 Special and it's an excellent gun. The trigger pull is surprisingly smooth and light. I've always said short-barreled revolvers are the real man's guns because of the difficulty in hitting targets with them at the customary 25 yard handgun gun ranges, but they're plenty accurate for the lethal encounters for which they were designed, typically no more than *five* yards.

To be honest, for years i never even looked at snubby's. Figured being 6foot8 they'd be too small for me. Then came along mr H.45.. And i had to re-think. Been shooting them on and off for about 5 years now. I'm not that good a shot with 'm, but they sure have grown on me! Handy little hardware!

8 shots, with the most common ammo ever, a revolver for reliability, pocket size. I dont even like guns and I think I can safely say this gun is a win. It's something I would want in my pocket in unrest. And like I said, I'm not even into guns.

@@overlordRX I have fun shooting a shotgun or a .22 but for the most part they make me uncomfortable and I prefer to have as little to do with them as I can. Not a big deal. I have basic knowledge, safety, and understand the thing as it exists.

@@HammersOverStrikers hey man, I know stuff about things I dont have much to do with! You only need like 20 or 30 solid facts to know the bulk of how to handle, be safe, and deal with the mechanics of guns. Safety switch, magazine latch thingey, where the ammo goes, how to cycle it, barrel/receiver/shoulder area, which end is slightly more dangerous...

Grip selection for the LCR is limited but there are some good ones. Pachmayr Guardian is one also Eagle grips Secret Service grip. Hogue makes a small boot grip. The LCR will pocket just fine.

My .38spl LCR came with a white front sight, I prefer it's trigger pull (& the one on a.22mag LCR) to the one on my S&W 642 .38spl Airweight.

I’ve been looking for a used 43c for years and still have yet to see one at four local gun shops. I had the LCR but traded it in because I found it too big for pocket carry and the trigger was bad for me. I continually short stroked it. Before you start saying that I simply need to learn how to work a revolver, I have a number of them and I have never had this problem before. Anyway, can’t find the 43c anywhere used, but I have seen the LCR numerous times. I think that’s an indication of quality differences between the two.

Yeah, that tells all. I have and love the 43c. You couldn't pay me to carry the LCR after range testing it side by side vs 43c. Worth saving a little bit and buying new. Some good deals on gun broker new!

I have carried a .22 for years with hot ammo along with others 9mm, 40 cal, 45cal, etc. I like the .22 because it is light and small, easily concealable and has very controllable recoil. Many many people have effectively used a .22 cal over the years in self defense situations and have lived to tell about it. It makes a great defense pistol for females because of the low recoil. The 43C would be a great choice because of the size, white dot front sight and its eight round capacity.

For the recoil sensitive folks, I would recommend an LCR in .327 Federal Magnum and shoot only .32 ACP, 32 S&W, .32 S&W Long or .32 H&R Magnum. Ejecting the .32 ACP is a little tricky but doable because of the length of the star ejector. I definitely would NOT suggest recoil sensitive shooters even think about shooting the .327 Federal Magnum cartridges. The LCR .327 Federal Magnum would run about the same price as their .22 LR.
