Music.... not just for humans
@mu99ins5 жыл бұрын
A wild bird roosted in my defunct roof-mounted heater box for 7 months. The first time it heard music, it tweeted excitedly. It's loved music. All kinds, and learned stuff about music. In fact, a bird listens to music better than most people. Not only that, they have quicker hearing that we do. This bird could read my emotions. It would prompt me to play music, and when I didn't play enough music, it would prompt me in a different way. This bird learned things about music, to the point that I was having doubts about myself. I never knew an animal could be so intelligent. Of course, this can't be told to anybody in RT because they'll instantly assume it is a crazy story. I recorded the bird's tweets on a voice recorder just to prove to myself that I wasn't hallucinating. I played back the recorded tweets, and the bird answered the 1st 3 tweets, hesitantly, and then stopped answering the recorded tweets. I started viewing You Tube bird videos to see if other birds, and animals, liked music. Some did. Some didn't. I watched a lot of music videos, and I've learned things about humans, such as, humans don't seem to listen to music much, and if they do, it's usually background music. Background music is an annoyance to a bird. Another thing I've learned is that people are not curious about birds listening to music. I've posted in various You Tube videos, and little curiosity about a bird who loves music. No questions at all. Humans are funny. You'd think people would be curious about a bird listening to music. Do they listen for content? Do they know the difference between one piece of music and another? Can they tell the difference between music and noise? What do I mean that a bird can listen quicker than a human? What do I mean when I say a bird listens to music better than people. What things about music did the bird learn? All these questions, unasked. What was the bird's favorite music? Nobody asked.

@Nunix - Alright, you asked for it. Here is the story of a tiny, neighborhood bird who was addicted to music. It liked all music. It's tweet sounded like a human saying the word "tweet", except in a higher pitch. It would slightly modify it's tweet to express itself. Imagine you could only say "tweet". You could say it excitedly, or angrily, or plaintively, or to express such ideas as, "I know that sound." That last phrase by the bird would sound like, "tw-EE-t !" It could ask me for my opinion by expressing the sound "Tweet" as a question. For instance, late at night, it's so quiet in my neighborhood that you can hear a pin drop. The street sweeper was rumbling past the house. The bird tweeted which sounded like it wanted my emotional opinion about this loud truck. I answered by saying a sentence to the bird to express my emotion about the truck. I knew it could not understand my words, but it read my emotions. So, I said, "Oh, that truck ain't nothing, little birdie." The bird would read my emotions, and I think birds have the same emotions as humans. Emotions are their vocabulary. So, back to the music... I played a variety of music from You Tube. This included classical, rock, jazz and music from different cultures. After a couple of months of intensive music listening, the bird began listening to the first 10 or 20 bars and then tweet as if it was sampling the music, and then let out a tweet as if saying, "Yeah, okay, I dig what this tune is doing." I understand there is such a thing a projection, where humans project what they're thinking onto an animal, and I was considering this while I was listening to the bird's reaction to the music, and other tweets it made. But, if you live with an animal, you learn to know things about the animal, and the animal learns things about it's human. I'm retired, and one of my retirement goals was to broaden my listening, and this bird encouraged me to listen to music all day and evening, until I turned off the computer. So, we listened to music, for a least 8 hours a day, for 7 months. That's a lot of music, and I soon was listening to music I'd never listened to before. All of it was from You Tube. The bird might tweet loudly to get my attention. We would be listening to a piece of music, and I might drop something on the table and make a big noise, and the bird would often give me a reproachful tweet, which would be much lower pitch for not listening to the music. What the bird wanted is for the two of us to listen to the music together. It was a thing that it wanted to do with a nest mate. If I were to go do something in another room, it would not be interested in the music, and would be interested in my activity. That's another story, or two. Back to the music. The bird recognized Beatles music, and would give an excited tweet for those few Beatles tunes that I would play. And it would identify Beatles songs almost immediately. It liked Paul's voice more than John's, according to the sweetness of it's tweets. One time, by mistake, I put on a a small jazz band, with a black pianist as the band leader...and I forget his name right now...but the bird tweeted excitedly. Oh no, I thought, the bird doesn't like jazz does it? I'm not really into jazz, but I put on some jazz for the bird. It loved jazz. Most of the jazz I played was from the 1930s and 1940s. My guess is the bird like soloists in songs, and jazz has a lot of soloists. For example, while listening to Yuja Wang play a Rachmaninov concerto no. 2, the bird would tweet loudly each time the Yuja would start playing her solo parts. And while playing the 5th movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, where Beethoven had 4 soloists, 2 women and 2 men, the bird would tweet loudly as each soloist started to sing it's part. And that's why I think the bird was into jazz, because it was rooting for the soloists. The bird would get excited during crescendos, tweeting loudly at the crescendo gathered energy. And, often enough but not always, the bird would tweet at the same time the music would get to a really good part, or a pay off section of the song, where it builds to a point and then sound so good to my human ears, often the bird would tweet then, too. One time, while listening to a long piece of music, the music began to play softly, and the bird tweeted softly in response. That was so cool. Always, when a song was winding down to an end, the bird would tweet, as if to say, "The song's ending. Pick another song." Sometimes, I wouldn't pick another song, but just surf the net. Then the bird would prompt me to play music. And there was 2 basic ways it would do this. It would tweet at my first peck at the keyboard, as if to remind me there's no music playing. Then for a while it would start to tweet oh so sadly, because no music. But after a while, it dropped the sad tweets and adopted another strategy. It had a unique tweet that was different than it's normal tweet. I called it the Insta-tweet. It was as if it was spring loaded, and it used it like a pop gun, and would use this to prompt me to play music. It liked to use the insta-tweet while I practiced billiards. It liked to insta-tweet my shot once in a while, trying to insta-tweet just a my cue struck the cue ball, an it did it a couple times right on the money. The bird roosted in my broken heater box on the roof and would listen to me via the ducting to each room. The kitchen was the room furthest away from the heater box, and the bird would tweet louder at me when I was in the kitchen. It perched in that box waiting for me to start to stir in the morning, and would insta-tweet me, if it heard me scratch or make a noise, to get me out of bed. It would proceed to supervise me all day long, and late at night, when I turned of the computer, the bird would tweet at that sound, and I would answer, "Yes, little birdie, it's time for bed." And it would listen to me take of my clothes and climb into bed, and tweet at me as I was trying to get in to good position in bed. Then, I think, when I fell asleep, the bird went out hunting for food. After about 7 months, a smoke alarm went off and scared the bird away. I waited a couple of days for it to return, and it didn't. I realized this bird was affecting my life, and I had just enough of being supervised by a music starved bird, so I bent back the louvers on the heater box, which was the entrance for the bird, to make sure it would not return. I mean, I had enough. But I miss that bird, and will always hold dear it's tweets. From the very start of our relationship, when the bird tweeted at me, I would answer it's tweet.
@mu99ins4 жыл бұрын
Listening to this bird for 7 months, I've come to the understanding that bird's are not multi-taskers. They pay attention to one thing at a time. If you own a bird, the bird is interested in what you are doing. If you are doing something, and music is playing, that is an annoyance to the bird because the bird follows what you are doing with it's eyes and ears. The way to listen to music with a bird, is to just sit and listen to the music, and not do something to distract the bird's attention. If you sing or play an instrument, that is okay, because it's part of the music listening experience. If you watch most of the bird videos, you will observe that they are not listening to music together. Sometimes there is music playing but the human is doing something. So the bird is not listening to the music. It's listening to the human over the music. Also, I think birds have a non-ending attention span. The bird in the heater box could listen to symphony after symphony and tweet for more when they ended. It's the way music should be listened to, anyway...with full attention. Also, importantly, if you sing a song to a bird, sing the entire song. If you can't remember the words, go to the trouble of downloading the words to the song so you can sing the entire song to the birds. They don't want you to stop.
